Our oldest is taking advantage of early college programsRecently, I attended an orientation with my 16-year-old for her early college program. I wasn't familiar with early college programs, but they've become popular in our local area, both for the support they can offer teens transitioning to college and the cost savings they can offer. Students in the program take an additional year of high school that's a full college course load and then graduate from high school with up to 60 college credits, sometimes enough for a full associate degree. Along with the early college program, I took the small amount of savings we did have for her and opened a 529 education account. The catch is that all the money has to be used for educational purposes, but things such as trade school and school expenses qualify.

Ric Tapia | Getty Images Sport | Getty ImagesSports team owners benefiting from soaring team values are also facing new pressure from two of the oldest certainties in American wealth: death and taxes. With the average age of team owners rising, and team values skyrocketing into the billions, owners and leagues are increasingly focused on how to ensure smooth ownership transitions to the next generation of buyers. Succession and taxes have become especially important in the National Football League, where the average age of team owners is now over 72 and team values are all surging. The average NFL team is now worth $6.49 billion, and no team is valued at less than $5.25 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations. So owners have to be planning for the potential for more punitive estate taxes in the coming years.

Buckley, 49, learned the social media slang for this sudden defiance, which is called “soiling the nest,” and said she felt that was happening with him. “It may look like picking fights with parents, talking back, leaving messes, and generally putting stress on their interpersonal relationships with their parents,” Galanti said. For teens graduating high school, the main psychological goal is to “develop and consolidate their own identities,” Galanti said. Creating this space between themselves and their parents makes the transition to this new independence phase easier for some teens, Galanti said. Florida-based writer Terry Ward lives in Tampa with her two young children, who are still squarely ensconced in the nest.

The basic problem: It's unclear how these free services could support new, Hollywood-style programming even if they wanted to. Now, with YouTube making the jump to TV screens and "free, ad-supported TV" (FAST) services having a moment, where does that leave Hollywood? Tech and legacy media will battle over free TV in the coming monthsLooking ahead, the major players already ahead in free TV will likely continue to gain share. Free streaming may seem like a way for Hollywood to claw back viewers. If not, it's hard to say what winning in the battle for free TV will actually get them.

This ascent is something scientists have been looking forward to for years, long before Perseverance landed on Mars. Turning back Martian timeThe impact that created Jezero Crater also generated a lot of heat, partly from the energy of the object that slammed into Mars. Pragyan made 23 measurements as it rolled along a 338-feet (103-meter) region of the lunar surface, located within 164 feet (50 meters) of Chandrayaan-3’s landing site, for about 10 days. The rover’s data marks the first measurements of elements within lunar soil near the south polar region. NASAThe first lunar samples collected during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 led researchers to the theory that the moon was once a molten ball of magma. The Pragyan rover, seen on Earth before being sent to the moon on Chandrayaan-3, used analytical tools to study lunar soil. Still, the Trump campaign has long worried that Kennedy’s campaign, built on conspiracies and anti-vaccine rhetoric, pulled directly from their side, especially in a handful of key states. CNN —The Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against the real estate company RealPage, alleging the company’s software uses landlord data to artificially inflate the price of rent across the United States by quelling competition in the market. According to the complaint, the Texas-based company uses nonpublic data from landlords to train RealPage’s algorithm for pricing recommendations, creating a “vast scheme to subvert the competitive process,” one Justice Department official said. The lawsuit from the Justice Department comes amid a rise in corporate landlords – companies that own large numbers of rental units – a fact that was central to the case. “In a free market, these landlords would otherwise be competing independently to attract renters based on pricing, discounts, concessions, lease terms, and other dimensions of apartment leasing,” the Justice Department said in announcing the charges. “RealPage also uses this scheme and its substantial data trove to maintain a monopoly in the market for commercial revenue management software.”This is a developing story.

With revenge travel over and pandemic savings depleted, travelers say they're planning fewer trips this summer, or skipping their vacations altogether. "After two straight years of strong gains, the number of Americans planning to take leisure trips is taking a dip," states a summer travel report from Deloitte Insights. 'Too expensive' to travel nowAmericans are planning 2.3 trips this summer, down from 3.1 trips from the summer of 2023, according to Deloitte's survey of more than 4,000 people. watch nowThe number of people who said they're avoiding summer travel altogether increased from 37% to 42%, the report showed. Those generations are spending less on airfare and hotel accommodations too, said Baig, suggesting a cutback in travel spending may be a normalization of the market following the end of revenge travel.

Now, I love that my kids have an age difference of 23 months. But something that will bring them even closer together is that though they're almost two years apart, they're in back-to-back grades. My older son's birthday is in June, and my younger son's is in May; my oldest would be one of the younger kids in his class if we'd sent him to kindergarten when he was 5. He is more shy and reserved, so I do worry about him starting school at a younger age. Remains found in a tomb in northwestern Spain are likely to belong to a ninth-century bishop believed to have helped create the Camino de Santiago, one of Christianity’s most popular pilgrimages, a new study has found. News of the discovery reached King Alfonso II of the neighboring region of Asturias, who marched with his court from Oviedo to Santiago. The 90 mile royal pilgrimage established what is today known as the “Primitive Way”, the oldest path used by pilgrims of the Camino, or Way of St. James. Theodomir’s existence had been hotly debated until 1955, when Spanish archaeologist Manuel Chamoso Lamas discovered a tombstone underneath Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral inscribed with his name. Perez-Ramallo told El Pais newspaper that there was a “98% likelihood of it being Theodomir.”

Lobster fishing is a game of inches, and the number of inches is about to change. Fishing regulators are instituting a new rule that lobster fishermen must abide by stricter minimum sizes for crustaceans they harvest. The changes do not apply in Canada, which has an even larger lobster fishing industry than the U.S. Some scientists who study the fishery have supported the minimum size change. But the lobster industry sees a different story, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, the oldest and largest fishing industry association on the East Coast.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government said Tuesday that it had filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing after Chinese jets flew dangerously close and fired a volley of flares in the path of a Philippine air force patrol plane over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army said Saturday that a Philippine air force aircraft “illegally” entered the airspace above the shoal, which China claims, disrupting its combat training activities. The command sent jets and ships to identify, track and drive away the Philippine aircraft, it added. In 2013, China announced a new Air Defense Identification Zone over the East China Sea that covers a chain of disputed islands also claimed by Japan. Washington has repeatedly warned that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, ships and aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

At the end of [the] 1980s, Japanese companies accounted for like 51% of the global semiconductor market. So by doing this ... one thing undercut Japanese semiconductor chip makers' competitiveness in the global market. Another thing [is] that [it] forced open [the] Japanese semiconductor market to foreign players, and this creates opportunity for the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan. And Japanese companies are trying to both develop their own capacity but also attract phone companies to establish fabs there. So by collaborating with international companies, Japanese companies can leverage their existing technology and manufacturing techniques to expand their global share as well.
