Two former high-ranking New York City Fire Department chiefs were indicted by federal prosecutors Monday on charges of pocketing bribes to expedite fire safety reviews. The charges come as Mayor Eric Adams' administration has been under scrutiny from prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan. "New Yorkers deserve better," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a press conference where he announced the charges against the former chiefs, Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco. Jocelyn Strauber, head of the New York City Department of Investigation, told reporters all the sites have since been re-inspected. Both are no longer with the FDNY — Saccavino retired in March and Cordasco retired in June.

But the Secret Service is still tasked with fighting financial crimes. Even though Latinos in the U.S. have become more aware of the word "Latinx," about half of the Hispanic population still has never heard of the gender-neutral alternative, the Pew Research Center found in a study published Thursday. The number of Latinos who have heard of "Latinx" has nearly doubled since 2019, when only 23% of the Hispanic population reported being aware of it. Now, almost half of the U.S. Latino population (47%) say they have heard of "Latinx," according to the study. The share of the Hispanic population who use "Latinx" to describe themselves remained statistically unchanged from 2019 to 2023. Only 3% of the Hispanic population nationwide used the word to describe themselves in 2019, which rose to 4% in 2023.

☆ Boeing faces strike threat as union members vote on tentative labor deal today

Among other benefits increases, the contract would increase union members’ pay by last least 25% over four years. Union members have launched a series of protests this week outside of Boeing plants and may ultimately reject the new contract union leaders negotiated with Boeing management. The deal will be officially approved if more than 50% of the members vote in favor of the tentative agreement. That would prevent a strike, no matter how many workers vote to strike. If just more than a third of members vote against a strike, then the contract takes effect, no matter the results of the ratification vote.

Hong Kong CNN —A Chinese investment bank known for making some of the biggest deals in the country’s tech sector during its heyday has revealed it received a massive bill for 78 million yuan ($11 million) related to the disappearance of its star banker, Bao Fan. The request for payment from unspecified Chinese authorities only deepens the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Bao, who founded boutique investment bank China Renaissance in Beijing in 2005 and made it one of the top dealmakers for Chinese tech firms. He helped broker the 2015 merger between two of the country’s leading food delivery services, Meituan and Dianping. In February 2023, China Renaissance reported him missing amid a wider anti-corruption crackdown. CNN has reached out to the investment bank for additional information.
