The study, which analyzed the brains of eight elephants, claims to be the first attempt to count the number of facial nucleus neurons, or brain cells involved in controlling facial movement and expression, in elephants. African elephants were discovered to have about 63,000 facial nucleus neurons, and their slightly smaller cousins, the Asian elephant, had around 54,000, according to the analysis published Wednesday in Science Advances.
