Kevin McCarthy's impossible GOP math
  + stars: | 2022-12-14 | by ( Stephen Collinson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is far from assured of winning sufficient support in his party to become House speaker next month. The tiny GOP House majority that takes over in January, after a disappointing midterm performance, would mean a fragile governing mandate for any party at any point in American history. McCarthy’s impossible mathFrom a broader political perspective, it might be in McCarthy’s interest to stand up to the most extreme members of his conference. The path to the GOP majority went through comparatively moderate seats in places like New York that will be most at risk in the 2024 election. But it also reflected Greene’s growing personal power, after she broke with some radical GOP members and lined up to support McCarthy’s speakership.
But they also exposed a darker side of Christian nationalism that was always there, experts say. Americans who support Christian nationalist ideas may not identify as Christian nationalists. Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist at IUPUI and co-author of "Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States," has found similar connections between Christian nationalism and antisemitism. Additional research has also found close connections between Christian nationalism, antisemitism, QAnon followers, and supporters of Trump. Greene has said the GOP should be the party of Christian nationalism and even sells merch adorned with the term.
Michael Cohen said that Donald Trump won't apologize for failing to condemn Kanye West. The former president "doesn't care" that his daughter's family is Jewish, Cohen said on MSNBC. Cohen was asked about a Rolling Stone article that said Jewish Republicans are "begging" Trump to denounce Ye. Cohen responded: "He doesn't care that Ivanka married Jared, doesn't care that Ivanka converted. Cohen said Trump would not apologize for failing to condemn Ye because he "can't even acknowledge fault."
Jewish and anti-hate organizations are urging social media influencers and tech platforms to stop hosting interviews with Ye, the rapper and artist formerly known as Kanye West, as he’s continued to make antisemitic statements and criticize Jewish people in his recent public appearances. Ross, a popular Twitch streamer with 7 million followers, is Jewish and said that he was going to “stand up for the Jews” in the interview. On Dec. 5, political streamer Hasan Piker said in a Twitch stream that he may participate in the interview. Rez said that even if Ross planned to challenge Ye, she would be concerned that the interview would stoke antisemitic violence. Ross has been silent on the topic of the Ye interview since the call with Fuentes was published.
Donald Trump accused Jewish leaders of a lack of loyalty and claimed he was the best president for Israel. Trump has been widely criticized for having dinner with Nick Fuentes and Ye, who have made antisemitic comments. "How quickly Jewish Leaders forgot that I was the best, by far, President for Israel," Trump wrote. Trump, whose daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner are Jewish, has previously been called out for using antisemitic tropes himself. Since the dinner with Trump, Ye has made even more explicitly antisemitic comments, including saying that he likes Hitler and denying the Holocaust.
Trump pledged when he launched his 2024 campaign that "America's comeback starts right now." Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also said Trump's actions make him less likely to be the party's nominee. Trump endorsed Florida Sen. Rick Scott in the contest, but McConnell handily defeated Scott, another sign of Trump's slipping hold on the Republican Party. The DA's office notched a huge victory this week when a jury convicted the Trump Organization of nine tax-fraud counts. US District Judge Beryl Howell has not made a final decision on the request to hold Trump's team in contempt of court, according to The Post.
Biden had been hopeful that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be more apt to free Griner once America’s midterm elections were done, a calculation that proved correct. Still detained in Russia is Paul Whelan, a businessman whom the White House has also been working to free without success. In a 2012 interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” when he was vice president, Biden came out in favor of same-sex marriage, and he is expected to sign the measure into law. White House officials acknowledged the headwinds and worried that the midterm elections would be a repudiation of Biden’s record. “When I look at what the Biden White House has done, I think experience and patience really paid off,” said Jennifer Palmieri, who served as White House communications director during the Obama administration.
If Republicans decide they are tired of losing elections they should be winning, Herschel Walker’s loss to Raphael Warnock in Georgia’s Senate runoff election should mark the definitive and unequivocal end of the Trump era. Republicans have grown complacent and comfortable on a bed of final straws with Trump, but Walker’s loss should wake them up from their slumber. Walker’s loss showed once again that Trump is the GOP’s Bridge to Nowhere, continuing the poor performance of Trump-anointed candidates in the midterms. If Trump wants to start a new party with his dinner companion, white supremacist Nick Fuentes, he’d be doing the Republican Party (and the republic) a favor. Republicans have grown complacent and comfortable on a bed of final straws with Trump, but Walker’s loss should wake them up from their slumber.
On Saturday, Trump suggested terminating rules in the Constitution that led to disputed voter fraud in the 2020 election. Rep. Liz Cheney resurfaced Gosar's tweet, calling on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to condemn the former president. Following backlash from GOP senators on his call to terminate the US Constitution, Trump attempted to walk back his remarks on Monday. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "This week Trump said we should terminate all rules, regulations etc 'even those in the Constitution' to overturn the election.
Larry Kudlow said former President Donald Trump was damaging his own support levels. He highlighted Trump calling for the "termination" of the Constitution and controversial meetings. "I don't understand what our former boss is doing," Kudlow said, speaking with Trump's former counselor Kellyanne Conway. Kudlow also said that Trump was too focused on claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him. "His meddling and insistence that the 2020 election was stolen will deliver more losses," Bolton added.
“Antisemitism is dangerous,” said Emhoff, the nation’s first Jewish spouse of a president or vice president. Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff during a roundtable about the rise of antisemitism in Washington on Wednesday. President Joe Biden has proposed raising that sum to $360 million in the coming year for the 2023 fiscal year. Conference speakers drew a link between antisemitism and another scourge that the Biden administration wants to confront: threats to democracy. “Antisemitism is the death knell of democracy,” said Deborah Lipstadt, a Holocaust scholar and the Biden administration’s special envoy to combat and monitor antisemitism.
[1/2] Republican U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker gives a concession speech during his election night party after losing the U.S. midterm runoff election to Democratic U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock beat Republican challenger Herschel Walker in a Georgia runoff election that fortified Democrats' Senate majority and handed the Republican Party another bitter loss to cap a disappointing midterm election season. Trump held two rallies for Walker in Georgia, but did not come to the state for the runoff, only phoning in to boost supporters on Monday night. That forced uncomfortable congressional Republicans to respond to Trump's statements in the days before the runoff election, pulling the focus from Walker's candidacy. At one rally prior to the runoff, Walker publicly mused about whether a werewolf could kill a vampire.
During his short campaign, Trump has dominated headlines by dining with the rapper Ye, who has gone on antisemitic tirades in recent weeks, and the white nationalist Nick Fuentes. And on Tuesday night, Herschel Walker’s loss in a Georgia Senate runoff added an exclamation point to the argument that Trump hurt the GOP by picking a bad crop of candidates in swing states. They just think he’s the future, but Trump is the present.”Still, Trump hasn’t offered much in the way of a new vision for the country. Then in early 2023, I expect the Trump campaign to start rolling out an effort to lock down the early primary states,” the adviser said. “If Trump can put together early primary support, if he can raise a bunch of money, he’ll be hard to beat.
But experts don't think the conviction is enough to tamp down his chances in the 2024 election. "But at some point, the Republican party has to decide how much they're willing to overlook before they just cut him loose," Crouse said. "That's not really a logical analysis, that's more a poetic analysis, but I think it does have symbolic significance in that sense." "Even though [Trump] wasn't a defendant, it's at his feet, and it can be portrayed that way by his enemies both inside the Republican party and outside the Republican party," O'Brien added. "And I think that's going to weaken his candidacy" in 2024, especially as his hold on the GOP is challenged by a potential presidential hopeful: Florida Gov.
Trump's bad week is bad news for his comeback

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s bad week is bad news for his comeback. The House January 6 committee has decided to make criminal referrals to the Justice Department – possibly of him or his close associates. “We know the committee has really been ahead of the Justice Department,” CNN’s Jamie Gangel said Tuesday, noting the Justice Department has sought testimony and evidence gathered by the January 6 committee. Helping alleged riotersInstead of focusing on the next election, Trump continues to fixate on his 2020 loss. A split in the GOPMcCarthy’s mission impossible is to find 218 votes from 222 House Republicans to gain the speaker’s gavel when the full chamber votes in January.
The White House hosted an antisemitism roundtable Wednesday with Jewish leaders and organizations. The roundtable discussion was hosted by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish. In April the Anti-Defamation League released an audit revealing that antisemitic incidents reached an "all-time high" in 2021, citing a 34% increase year over year. The second gentleman noted during the roundtable that antisemitism is not a partisan issue. Emhoff declared that he will not stand idly by and will work with Jewish leaders to continue combatting antisemitism in America.
Donald Trump claimed on Monday that he had not called for the Constitution to be cancelled. It came amid a backlash from Republican senators over the comment. Trump said that election fraud allowed for the "termination of all rules" including "those found in the Constitution." "The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to 'terminate' the Constitution. His claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him have been widely refuted.
WASHINGTON — Doug Emhoff is set to convene a roundtable with Jewish leaders and other experts Wednesday to discuss the rise of antisemitism and efforts to counter hate nationwide. The White House announced Monday that the roundtable hosted by the second gentleman will include White House Domestic Policy Adviser Susan Rice; Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism; and Keisha Lance Bottoms, senior adviser to the president for public engagement. Antisemitism in the U.S. hit record highs last year, according to the Anti-Defamation League, which has been tracking antisemitic incidents since 1979. During an unrelated event Friday, Emhoff spoke briefly about the effects of widespread antisemitism. Former President Donald Trump hosted several people who have espoused antisemitic beliefs for dinner last month, including Ye, white nationalist Nick Fuentes and Milo Yiannopoulos.
White House to address rising anti-Semitism, attacks on Jews
  + stars: | 2022-12-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
WASHINGTON, Dec 5 (Reuters) - The White House will address rising anti-Semitism in a roundtable event with Jewish leaders on Wednesday focused on attacks against Jews across the United States and how to combat hate. The White House did not say which leaders from the Jewish community would attend the event, hosted by second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, the first Jewish spouse of a president or a vice president. The move comes as reports of anti-Semitism have increased nationwide. The issue has drawn headlines in recent weeks after former Republican President Donald Trump hosted white supremacist Nick Fuentes and the musician formerly known as Kanye West at his private club in Florida. And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting anti-Semitism wherever it hides.
Milo Yiannopoulos is no longer working for Ye's 2024 presidential campaign. Ye told paparazzi that Yiannopoulos, who previously interned for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, would join his campaign team as a campaign manager on November 25 following the rapper's announcement that he intends to run for president in 2024. Yiannopoulos was one of a handful of right-wing figures who joined Ye during a dinner at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home on November 22. Fuentes denied that the dinner was a plot against Trump in a Telegram post following the NBC report. Ye removed references to Yiannopoulos and Fuentes on his Twitter account on Thursday before he was permanently suspended later that day, Newsweek reported.

Dov Hikind has said that the image of any political leader will suffer for failing to sever ties with former President Donald Trump. Dov Hikind, a prominent Jewish leader in Brooklyn, endorsed Donald Trump for president in 2020. After Mr. Trump’s recent dinner with two prominent promoters of anti-Semitic rhetoric, Mr. Hikind said he won’t support Mr. Trump again. “It is over, it is finished,” Mr. Hikind, whose 36-year run as a state lawmaker ended in 2018, said of his support for the former president. He has disqualified himself from any of us supporting him ever again.”
Nick Fuentes was filmed launching his drink at customers in an In-N-Out Burger in Los Angeles. According to witnesses, Fuentes retaliated after a couple confronted him in the fast food restaurant. Fuentes, a white nationalist, says he is working on Kanye West's 2024 presidential campaign. The post said Fuentes threw his drink when the couple was running away, but it hit "a bunch of randoms." Fuentes, a white nationalist organizer with a history of making virulently antisemitic and racist comments, says he is working on Ye's 2024 presidential campaign.
Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes Donald Trump will condemn antisemitism following his dinner with Ye and Nick Fuentes. Netanyahu, a longtime ally of Trump's, won reelection last month and is due to resume power as Prime Minister. Trump faced backlash from his own party following his Mar-a-Lago dinner with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West who has spouted anti-semitic threats, and white nationalist Nick Fuentes. He has yet to denounce Kanye West at all. "On this matter, on Kanye West and that other unacceptable guest, I think it's not merely unacceptable, it's just wrong.
White supremacist Nick Fuentes slammed Marjorie Taylor Greene's character on an online show. Speaking on her own show, Greene described Fuentes as "racist" and "immature" and asked why Ye would "align himself with that." On "Politically Provoked," Fuentes claimed that just a week ago, Greene wanted to visit the 2024 presidential campaign office in California. Fuentes went on to claim that Greene wanted to visit "when it was cool" but "flipped back" afterward. Fuentes did not provide any evidence for his claim that Greene wanted to visit Ye's campaign HQ.
