Such a spy installation would allow Beijing to gather electronic communications from the southeastern United States, which houses many U.S. military bases, as well as monitor ship traffic, the newspaper reported. The countries have reached an agreement in principle, the officials said, with China to pay Cuba "several billion dollars" to allow the eavesdropping station, according to the Journal. The intelligence on the plans for a Cuba station was gathered in recent weeks and was convincing, the Journal reported. Cuba, an old Cold War foe of the United States, has long been a hotbed of espionage and spy games. It backed down and removed the missiles, but it is widely regarded as the moment when the United States and the Soviet Union came closest to a nuclear confrontation.

U.S. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene did not include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill, contrary to claims circulating online. Reuters found no evidence that Greene is currently taking steps to remove the Miller Test or establish a pornography ban. No major news outlets covering the debt ceiling negotiations (tinyurl.com/2kmmynxa) reported on this. On June 3, President Joe Biden signed a bill that suspends the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, averting what would have been its first-ever default (here). There is no evidence that Greene is planning to include a “nationwide pornography ban” in the debt ceiling bill.

Each and every day, political campaigns send out fundraising requests via email and text messages. "It's an accepted part of fundraising that you're going to ruffle feathers," said one political consultant. Increasingly, consumers are drowning in a sea of spam messages and scams from political campaigns, and experts said it's not going to change anytime soon. And while they themselves said they get annoyed by the flood of spam messages, political campaigners said that annoying voters is simply part of the job. After the RNC repeatedly lobbied Google to drop its spam filter for political spam, the company briefly acquiesced before changing its mind after the 2022 midterm elections.

CNN —When all is said and done, it is looking increasingly likely that this iteration of Manchester City will go down as the greatest team in Premier League history. A 'Premier League Champions' banner is revealed outside Manchester City's stadium on Saturday. Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Europe/Getty ImagesIndeed, defender Rúben Dias recently called Guardiola the “main piece” of this City team. Back in February, the Premier League accused Manchester City of more than 100 breaches of the league’s finance rules and referred the club to an independent commission. The Premier League told CNN it had no comment to make on the issue, while Rosen said he wasn’t taking press inquiries.

"We started panicking and started connecting with other folks who we know have short-term rentals," Sullivan told Insider. Given the sharp rise of short-term rentals there, some local lawmakers have recently called for amending the law. But short-term rentals are often essential to a healthy tourism economy, particularly in vacation destinations. Investors jumped in to capitalize on the boom, and the market soon became saturated with short-term rentals. There's one thing pretty much everyone can agree on: Short-term rentals are here to stay.
"We started panicking and started connecting with other folks who we know have short-term rentals," Sullivan told Insider. Rather than a collapse of the industry, the increasingly bifurcated state of the market — a bust for some, a boom for others — is a clear sign that we have hit a turning point in the long-running battle over short-term rentals. Given the sharp rise of short-term rentals there, some local lawmakers have recently called for amending the law. Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she won't vote for a budget without cuts to DOJ and FBI. It adds to a long list of steep conservative demands in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. The unprecedented demand will likely garner momentum among the furthest-right members of the House Republican caucus. Once a fringe member of the caucus, Greene has emerged as a key ally of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Marjorie Taylor Greene🇺🇸 (@RepMTG) March 17, 2023Greene spokesman Nick Dyer clarified that the congresswoman was alluding to the use of the Holman rule, which allows Congress to target specific federal employees' salaries and zero-out specific government programs.
The White House lit into Tucker Carlson after he made misleading claims about January 6. The response shows the nerve Carlson has struck with his selectively edited footage of the riot. "Tucker Carlson is not credible," a White House spokesman said of the host. Bates then went after Carlson by name, poking fun at how the network has portrayed Carlson in past lawsuits. Outside of the White House, Carlson's comments and use of footage his show exclusively obtained from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has set off a torrent of criticism in Washington.
The dinner with shale producers and OPEC officials continued a tradition that began around five years ago when they were fierce competitors. It has been held in most recent years during the CERAWeek energy conference in the U.S. oil industry capital. Among the other topics that came up were strong oil demand and what U.S. shale producers could do to meet it given what shareholders want, he said. The event comes at a tumultuous time for global markets with the war in Ukraine disrupting global oil and gas flows while enriching both producer groups. Fewer OPEC officials are present at this year's annual CERAWeek conference, with ministers from key countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, absent from the attendee list.
March 6 (Reuters) - U.S. energy executives met privately with top OPEC officials on Monday on the sidelines of a Houston conference, people familiar with the matter said, continuing a tradition that began around five years ago when the two groups were fierce competitors. OPEC had viewed shale as an untamed force that undercut its revenue by bringing vast new oil supplies to market. Natural gas prices have fallen 13% amid forecasts of more mild weather as winter winds down. Falling prices are a sign that the US needs to scale back gas production, some commentators say. Henry hub natural gas futures for April fell to $2.62 per million British thermal units, according to data from the CME Group, down 12.73% from its previous close of $3 per million BTUs. Natural gas prices have tanked 34% since the start of the year, with the latest drop spurred by warm weather forecasts for the coming weeks. The changes in supply-demand balance are a stark contrast from last year, when issues stemming from Russia's invasion of Ukraine spiked gas prices on the spot market.

Feb 22 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK.O) on Wednesday said it would pull back on drilling and completing wells this year as natural gas prices have crashed to a quarter of what they were last summer. Earlier this month, Comstock Resources Inc (CRK.N) said it would cut drilling rigs to seven from nine this year. Henry Hub natural gas futures on Wednesday briefly dipped below $2 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) for the first time since September 2020, and were down from last year's $8 peak. Chesapeake, which previously announced plans to sell its oil position to focus on gas production, on Tuesday said it would sell oil assets in South Texas to chemical maker INEOS for $1.4 billion. Rival shale oil producer Diamondback Energy (FANG.O) on Wednesday said it was increasing its non-core asset sale target to at least $1 billion by the end of this year, up from $500 million previously.
Natural gas prices plunged as much as 10% on Tuesday to levels not seen since September 2020. The decline in natural gas prices can be attributed to a mild winter that has led to less demand. US natural gas prices fell as much as 10% to a low of $2.06 per million BTUs on Tuesday, representing a decline of 79% from its August high. The combination of weak demand and rising supply for natural gas is a dynamic that Chesapeake CEO Nick Dell'Osso warned about last month, when natural gas prices were trading just over $3.00. Dell'Ossoa said that natural gas producers should reduce production to avoid a downward spiral in prices.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia wore an ostentatious wool coat at the State of the Union. The far-right congresswoman wore the coat to "highlight" the Chinese spy balloon, her office says. The garment sells for $495 on Overland.com and "supports Peruvian artisans in earning fair wages." According to her office, it was an effort to draw attention to a Chinese spy balloon that flew over the continental United States last week. Greene, a self-described "Christian nationalist," also supported Peruvian artisans with her purchase.
WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Two men will be sentenced on Friday for their roles in the pepper-spray assault of a U.S. Capitol police officer who died the day after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, whose family are asking the judge to impose the harshest possible penalty on his attackers. Sicknick died of a stroke the next day. Thousands of Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol that day in an attempt to overturn his election loss. Today, reports of new cases are down to a trickle in the U.S. Health officials are shutting down emergency mobilizations. “It’s really impressive how that peak has come down to very, very low levels.”So who deserves the credit? Mpox cases began emerging in Europe and the U.S. in May, mostly among men who have sex with men. In early August, U.S. health officials decided to stretch the limited supply by giving people just one-fifth the usual dose. “The monkeypox virus essentially loses steam after a couple of rounds in humans,” Morse said.
US President Joe Biden speaks during a ceremony at the White House marking the two-year anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. The award ceremony at the White House was Biden's first time bestowing the Presidential Citizens Medal, which is given to Americans "who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens." Three of the medals were awarded posthumously to officers who had defended the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and died afterward by injuries or by suicide. "All of it was fueled by lies about the 2020 election," Biden said Friday, without mentioning Trump by name. The somber event at the White House was punctuated by a few moments of levity.
Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick was injured on the day of the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Damages are being sought by the estate and longtime partner of Officer Brian Sicknick, who was injured in the line of duty at the Capitol building. "In his factual proffer, Defendant Tanios admitted to accompanying Defendant Khater to the January 6th rally in D.C. and admitted to purchasing and carrying the bear spray Defendant Khater used on Officer Sicknick," the suit states. The lawsuit also names Trump as a defendant, arguing that violence on January 6 was incited through the former president's rhetoric. "Therefore, when accountability is achieved by Officer Sicknick's estate the recovery will be donated to charity."

Last year, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization, the Human Rights Campaign, labeled 2021 the “worst year” for LGBTQ rights in modern U.S. history, citing a record number of anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures across the country. “The LGBTQ+ community is really under siege right now,” said Ricardo Martinez, CEO of LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Texas. One bill that was successfully implemented, and gained national headlines for months, was Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law, or what critics have dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The word “grooming” has long been associated with mischaracterizing LGBTQ people, particularly gay men and transgender women, as child sex abusers. Those losses came after some conservative groups ramped up misleading or inflammatory campaign ads targeting transgender rights.
