When building a bond portfolio, advisors consider so-called duration, which measures a bond's sensitivity to interest rate changes. watch nowAs interest rates rose in 2022, many advisors opted for shorter-duration bonds to protect portfolios from interest rate risk. But allocations may shift, depending on future Fed policy. Look for 'areas of opportunity'As policy shifts, advisors are also looking for ways to optimize allocations amid continued economic uncertainty.

The three-hour telecast on CBS was hosted by Tony- and Academy Award-winner Ariana DeBose. Patrick Marber, who won best director of a play for “Leopoldstadt,” was among several winners who used their acceptance speeches to express support for the strike. The pre-show included the award for best regional theater, which went to the Pasadena Playhouse, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award, which went to director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell.

J. Harrison Ghee, whose portrayal of a gender-questioning musician fleeing the mob in “Some Like It Hot” has charmed critics and audiences, won a Tony Award for best leading actor in a musical Sunday night, becoming the first out nonbinary actor to win that award. Ghee’s victory came shortly after Alex Newell, who is also nonbinary, won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical, becoming the first out nonbinary performer to win a Tony. The wins come at a time when gender identity has become a central element of America’s culture wars, as conservatives in multiple states press for legislation on a variety of L.G.B.T.Q.-related issues, including gender-affirming medical care for transgender children and teenagers, bathroom access, sports participation and, in some states, performances. The Tony Awards, like the Oscars, have only gendered categories for performers, and Ghee and Newell agreed to be considered eligible for awards as actors. (Another nonbinary performer this season, Justin David Sullivan of “& Juliet,” opted not to be considered for awards rather than compete in a gendered category.)

CNN —After helping Paris Saint-Germain win its 11th Ligue 1 title at the weekend, Lionel Messi has some thinking to do. While Messi struggled with injury during his first season in Paris, he still managed to show flashes of his brilliance. Earlier this year, Messi’s long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Saudi club Al Nassr for an eye-watering sum of money, perhaps paving the way for other superstars to follow suit. “I think money is always a factor in human decision making,” Mora y Araujo said, amid reports Saudi club Al Hilal was targeting Messi’s signature. Despite an array of world class talent, PSG has failed to win the Champions League with Messi.

Clad in white corrugated steel, the structure is tall and thin with a sharply peaked roof, suggesting a giant pencil poking up through the earth. A chubby-armed sky blue ceramic chandelier by the New York-based artist Braxton Congrove hangs from the ceiling. The 12 unique place settings feature, among other items, an orange tumbler with three spiky legs by the New York-based artist and tableware designer Grace Whiteside and a clay oyster plate inlaid with shells by the ceramist Michele Mirisola of Brooklyn.
In its continued battle with inflation, the central bank on Wednesday announced another quarter percentage point interest rate increase. The latest rate increase comes after annual inflation eased to 5% in March, down from 6% in February, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. When building a bond portfolio, advisors consider so-called duration, which measures a bond's sensitivity to interest rate changes. I don't see us moving much higher from an interest rate perspective, so that should be good for bonds moving forward. But it may take another six months to see the results from the Fed's series of interest rate hikes, he said.
Morning Bid: Amazon cools, Intel warms, Japan hesitates

[1/2] A smartphone with a displayed Intel logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. But the dramatic re-acceleration of Big Tech stocks this week - where the NYFANG+TM (.NYFANG) index of the top 10 Big Tech stocks is now up 37% so far this year - is competing with multiple macro narratives that are increasingly hard to read. With the Fed meeting in view, the release of March PCE price inflation data later on Friday tops the diary. Wall St stock futures fell back 0.4% after a wild ride in Amazon.com shares overnight. With much of Europe and Asia closed on Monday for the May Day bank holiday, Asia bourses advanced in Wall St's slipstream but Europe retreated sharply on some jarring corporate updates.
Snap — The Snapchat parent company cratered about 18% after missing revenue expectations for the recent quarter. Intel — Intel shares rose more than 4% even after the company reported its largest quarterly loss on record and a 133% reduction year over year. Colgate-Palmolive — The consumer giant saw its stock rally 4% after the company reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped expectations. The company reported 98 cents in earnings per share, above the 89 cents expected by analysts polled by Refinitiv. Newell Brands — Shares gained 2% even after the consumer goods company reported a wider-than-expected loss.
Stocks stuck to a holding pattern this week as investors brace for an incoming wave of Big Tech earnings and the Fed's favorite inflation reading. Earnings reports have generally been better than expected so far this first quarter. Newell Brands, maker of WoodWick candles and other consumer brands, is among the companies shifting some inventory accounting to FIFO from LIFO. U.S. companies from truck maker Oshkosh Corp. to consumer-goods conglomerate Newell Brands Inc. are moving away from “last-in, first-out” accounting, or LIFO, for their inventory, as inflation continues to pressure businesses’ earnings. Elevated inflation has weighed on companies’ earnings over the past two years, and economists expect it to remain above recent norms at least through this year. The producer-price index, a closely watched gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 4.6% in February from a year earlier—well off the 11.7% annualized peak in March 2022 but still historically high.
A new government projection says the U.S. climate bill will speed up cuts to greenhouse-gas emissions this decade, helping ease the burden on corporate climate targets but still falling short of Paris Agreement ambitions. The EIA considers only energy-related emissions, not the entire economy, and uses 2005 as the baseline because the Paris Agreement also targets that year. The EIA attributed most of the improvement to the 2022 climate bill known as the Inflation Reduction Act. It also remains to be seen if the rosier outlook will spur companies to raise their climate ambitions. “I’m not sure it will lead to more ambitious corporate climate targets, many of which are already targeting net-zero emissions—a goal that will require policy and technology adoption well beyond that included in EIA’s new projections,” Mr. Newell said.
BUENOS AIRES, March 4 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi's boyhood club Newell's Old Boys of Argentina put up a banner of support for their country's captain in their stadium on Saturday, following the attack against his wife Antonela Roccuzzo's family business. A threatening hand-written message to the Paris St Germain forward was left on a supermarket belonging to the Roccuzzo's early on Thursday morning, after two people on motorcycles shot the business. (Pablo) Javkin (Rosario's mayor) is also a narco, he will not take care of you," read the handwritten text left on the door. The message of support from Newell's was posted on social media hours before Saturday's home game against Barracas Central in the Argentine league. Newell's is with you," read the red and black banner, which was placed behind one of the goals at the Coloso Marcelo Bielsa stadium ahead of the match.
World Cup winner Scaloni renews contract with Argentina to 2026

Feb 27 (Reuters) - Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has extended his contract until 2026, the country's FA said on Monday after he led the team to their World Cup triumph in Qatar last year. Scaloni renewed his contract after meeting with AFA president Claudio Tapia in Paris on Monday, taking him through to the next World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States. "Claudio Tapia and Lionel Scaloni met to close the extension of the contract as coach of the Senior Selection until 2026," the AFA said in a statement. Scaloni, 44, gave the squad captained by Lionel Messi a thorough overhaul, winning the Copa America in 2021 plus the 'Finalissima' against Italy and World Cup in 2022. We continue to strengthen the national team project, together with Lionel Scaloni, the world champion coach," said Tapia, who is in Paris to attend FIFA's 'The Best' Awards.
Supply-Chain Headaches Ease for Many Companies

Supply-chain snarls are fading from among the top challenges facing some U.S. companies as freight congestion eases, shipping costs fall and factories in Asia are freed from Covid-19 lockdowns. The rising costs and lengthy transit times pushed some companies to cut back on slower-selling products and raise prices. Today, freight congestion has cleared and ocean shipping costs have fallen close to prepandemic levels. Mr. Bergman said the decline was “partially offset by 40 basis points of favorable supply-chain impact driven by lower freight costs, which more than offset product cost headwinds during the quarter.”Some companies said they still have a way to go before supply-chain challenges are resolved. And Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Jim Farley told a virtual town hall on Feb. 9 that supply-chain problems were continuing to hamper the company’s progress.
The soft landing is still alive, but so is inflation Watching the stock market from Yucatan last week, it was pretty clear that firmer inflation numbers from the consumer price index and producer price index meant the glidepath to lower inflation will likely be bumpier than the bulls have been hoping for. The problem is clear: We have to figure out the glidepath of the inflation decline. We'll get more inflation data this week with the personal consumption expenditures price index on Friday. The good news is that other economic data indicates that the economy is very strong, particularly on the jobs front . The problem is a lack of bounce in growth stocks: Technology is expected to be flat in 2023, with only a modest 8.7% bounce in communication services earnings expected.

Morning Bid: Volatility stirs
  + stars: | 2023-02-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
World markets end a rough week of confusing and competing narratives in distinctly edgy form, with peculiarly subdued volatility gauges flickering back to life. Both 10 and 30-year yields hit their highest levels in over a month early on Friday. Job shedding in the digital sector continued, with Yahoo's plans to lay off more than 20% of its total workforce. That said, the year-on-year oil price trend continues to be negative, as it's been all year and base effects from last year's price spike around the Ukraine invasion will only deepen that and weigh on headline inflation further. Goldman Sachs lowered its oil price forecasts for this year and next, cutting its Brent 2023 price forecast by $6 to $92 per barrel - still above current levels around $86.
Feb 10 (Reuters) - Newell Brands Inc (NWL.O) said its top boss Ravi Saligram will retire effective May 16 and forecast annual results below analysts' estimates, sending the Sharpie maker's shares down 11% in premarket trading. Newell's fourth-quarter results beat estimates, but the company projected fiscal 2023 net sales between $8.4 billion and $8.6 billion. Analysts had expected full-year net sales of $9.08 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data. The company forecast an annual profit per share of 95 cents to $1.08, compared with estimates of $1.42. Newell also expects a first-quarter loss between 3 cents per share and 6 cents per share, compared with estimates of a profit of 23 cents.

Lyft said it anticipates about $975 million in revenue, lower than the $1.09 billion analysts expected, according to StreetAccount. Shares of movie theater chain AMC (AMC) have soared nearly 65% so far in 2023, and AMC (AMC)’s companion preferred stock (which trades under the ticker APE as a nod to the nickname AMC (AMC) fans have given themselves on social media) has more than doubled. So did investors learn nothing from last year’s market meltdown? I don’t agree with this market rally in meme stocks,” said Erik Ristuben, chief investment strategist with Russell Investments. Another strategist agrees this recent rally for meme stocks and other speculative bets may not end well. If they’re upbeat about spending, that could keep the rally in consumer stocks going.
