NEW YORK, May 10 (Reuters) - A U.S. bankruptcy judge on Wednesday blocked the NBA's Phoenix Suns from moving ahead with a television and streaming rights deal for its basketball games, saying the team violated the rights of its current broadcast partner, the bankrupt Diamond Sports Group. The Phoenix Suns last month announced they would broadcast future games to television and online streaming through a partnership with Gray Television Inc (GTN.N) and video technology startup Kiswe. The Suns' attorneys argued that its TV deal with Diamond expired with the end of the 2022-2023 regular season, and that the new deal would not interfere with Diamond's rights under its existing contract. "The Suns are saying one thing outside the court and another thing inside it," Lopez said. Financial terms of the Phoenix Suns' contracts with Diamond Sports and with Gray TV were kept sealed in bankruptcy court.

May 9 (Reuters) - Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog will have a cartilage transplant in his right knee this week and is expected to miss a second consecutive National Hockey League season (NHL), the team announced on Tuesday. The 30-year-old Swedish forward, who already sat out the entire 2022-23 regular season and playoffs after arthroscopic knee surgery last October, will undergo the latest procedure on Wednesday in Chicago. "It's a long time away from the game, but I'm confident in the player I am. I'm confident in the athlete that I am," Landeskog told reporters during a video call. Landeskog was selected by Colorado with the second overall pick of the 2011 NHL Draft and has recorded 571 points in 738 games.
The NFL Players Association, National Basketball Players Association, National Hockey League Players' Association, MLB Players Association, MLS Players Association and Women's National Basketball Players Association will work together to raise awareness about the cause and invest resources to improve mental health for the pro athlete community. This is the first time the sports organizations have come together to promote mental health. The high stakes, busy lifestyles and pressures of professional sports have caused many athletes to reveal their own mental health struggles in recent years. As athletes from all levels have expressed their struggles, many of the leagues realized that mental health needs to be as much of a priority as physical health is. The sports leagues will also highlight inspirational stories from athletes and the various mental health efforts they are leading.
May 1 (Reuters) - The Florida Panthers, in a bid to prevent their arena from being overrun by Toronto Maple Leafs fans during their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series, are restricting ticket sales for home games to residents of the United States. The Maple Leafs are known for having a devoted fan base that regularly shows up in large numbers when the team, one of seven National Hockey League clubs based in Canada, play on the road. But fans of the Maple Leafs, who are in the second round for the first time since 2004, will now have to seek tickets through the secondary market if they want to cut into the Panthers' home-ice advantage. "Orders by residents outside of the United States will be canceled without notice and refunds given," according to a message on Ticketmaster's website. The Maple Leafs advanced after beating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

While an IPO is not on the immediate horizon, the company is taking a step in the direction of preparing for one, hiring Meta's investor relations head to further build out its engagement with current and future shareholders. Deborah Crawford, who has served as Meta 's vice president of investor relations for more than eight years, is being appointed as Fanatics' head of investor relations, a new position at the company. Prior to Meta, Crawford was head of investor relations for Netflix, where she helped initiate the streaming company's first formal investor relations function, according to Fanatics. Schiffman declined to comment on the potential timing of a Fanatics IPO but confirmed the company has a goal of going public. Fanatics has seen its valuation and investor roster drastically expand in recent years, which has also helped to fuel IPO chatter.
The Democrat-led Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 11-10 to approve Su, a civil rights lawyer and former California labor commissioner who has served as a deputy labor secretary since 2021. If Su is confirmed, she will replace Marty Walsh, who stepped down as labor secretary last month to become executive director of the National Hockey League players' union. Using contractors can be up to 30% cheaper for companies than employees. Industry groups representing companies in the ride-hailing, delivery and other sectors using contractors have launched an aggressive campaign to oppose Su's nomination. “The next Labor Secretary must embrace the flexible earning opportunities that app-based platforms have unleashed for millions of Americans," Sharp said.

Sharks goalie Reimer declines to wear Pride jersey

March 18 (Reuters) - San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer said he will not wear the National Hockey League team's Pride jersey during warm-ups ahead of their game against the New York Islanders on Saturday because they do not align with his religious beliefs. Reimer is the second NHL player to refuse to participate in a team's Pride-themed initiatives following a similar decision by Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov in January. In addition, both the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild opted against wearing Pride jerseys and using sticks wrapped in rainbow tape during their Pride nights in January. As part of the Sharks' Pride Night, the team had specially-designed nameplates put on locker stalls while some players will use Pride Tape on their sticks. The Sharks said in a separate statement that they are proud to host Pride Night and that it reinforces the team's commitment to inclusiveness but also said they support Reimer's decision.
In eight NHL seasons, Connor McDavid has carried the expectations of being the savior of the Edmonton Oilers and the second coming of Wayne Gretzky. This year, he’s got an added burden: dragging the Oilers into the National Hockey League playoffs on the back of his best offensive season ever. McDavid is on a rampage as he skates through what is turning out to be one of the most prodigious individual seasons of this century. On Monday night against the Buffalo Sabres, he lifted the Oilers to a 3-2 win and tallied his 124th point of the season. It set a new career single-season high for the center—and Edmonton still has 17 games left to play in 2023.
