“Red Lobster cultivated Black customers. Red Lobster did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on current customer demographics. Red Lobster was not a “place we frequented a whole lot” in its early days, said Harold Dwight, who graduated two years after Boatwright in 1968. Red Lobster later named one of its signature dishes after King: “Walt’s Favorite Shrimp.” King died last year. Red Lobster brought the “outdoor fried fish experience” indoors, Autry said.

New York CNN —Hourly retail security workers are now wearing police-like body cameras at major stores. The manufacturer of Taser devices and other security companies are now designing and marketing body cameras specifically for retail workers. “Body cameras are just one of the many ways that we work to support a safe store environment,” the spokesperson said. New York CNN —Champion, the more than century-old sportswear brand, has a new owner. Hanesbrands announced Wednesday that it will sell Champion to Authentic Brands Group in a deal worth up to $1.5 billion with performance incentives. Many consumers have pulled back on discretionary clothing, a trend that has hurt Champion’s rivals such as Nike and Under Armour. Champion had made an exclusive C-9 Champion line for Target for around 15 years, but the contract expired in early 2020 as Target focused more on its own private-label brands. The company then started selling the C-9 line on Amazon.

New York CNN —Walmart, America’s largest private-sector employer, is starting a bonus program for its hourly employees. Walmart has an outsized impact on the labor market for hourly workers , and has been grappling with finding and retaining the workers it needs in a tight labor market. The company has 1.6 million US employees, of which nearly 1.5 million are hourly workers. It said this new program covers about 700,000 of those hourly employees who work in stores. Walmart boosted the average pay of its store managers from $117,000 to $128,000, or by just over 9%, the retailer announced earlier this year.

Costco’s $1.50 hot dog price is ‘safe’
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Costco’s new chief financial officer has a reassuring message for inflation-weary customers: don’t worry about the price of the $1.50 hot dog-soda combo. “To clear up some recent media speculation, I also want to confirm the $1.50 hot dog price is safe,” Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said on an earnings call with analysts Thursday. With Costco’s leadership change — and other longtime deals like Trader Joe’s 19-cent bananas and Planet Fitness’ $10 membership ending amid rising inflation — some had speculated about the future of Costco’s $1.50 hot dog. If Costco’s hot dog deal kept pace with inflation, it would be three times as expensive today — nearly $4.50. The $1.50 hot dog is a powerful marketing tool for Costco and is synonymous with Costco’s brand.

Same old hot dog. Just two months into his tenure, Costco's new finance chief Gary Millerchip has provided an update on the price of the chain's iconic $1.50 hot dog and soda combo. Speaking to CNN's Nathaniel Meyersohn, Millerchip said the price will be staying at the same place it has been since 1995. "I also want to confirm the $1.50 hot dog price is safe," he reportedly said. "Some businesses that are doing well with margin ... those things help us be more aggressive in other areas, or, as you mentioned, hold the price on the hot dog and the soda a little longer — forever," he said.

CNN —It’s becoming tougher and tougher for Americans to carry on with their spending spree. Years of elevated inflation and the highest interest rates in almost a quarter century are wearing out the US consumer. Savings accumulated during the Covid-19 pandemic are drying up, borrowers continue to rack up debt and delinquencies are marching higher. A second estimate of gross domestic product, released Thursday, showed that consumer spending was weaker in the first three months of the year than initially reported. Economists polled by FactSet are expecting data to be released Friday to show that consumer spending slowed notably in April from March.

Family Dollar has underperformed Dollar Tree and other discount chains in recent years, and it’s closing 975 stores. How a global seafood giant broke Red Lobster

Former Red Lobster employees say that while the pandemic, inflation and rent costs impacted Red Lobster, Thai Union’s ineptitude was the pivotal factor in Red Lobster’s decline. Kenny criticized Red Lobster employees at meetings and made derogatory comments about them, according to former Red Lobster leaders who worked closely with Kenny. Red Lobster’s annual customer count has dropped by 30% since 2019, Red Lobster said in its bankruptcy filing. Red Lobster employees say they were pressured by Thai Union representatives to buy more seafood from Thai Union. Thai Union representatives also began sitting in on meetings between Red Lobster and seafood suppliers, said one of the former Red Lobster employees who witnessed these conversations.

How Red Lobster choked on its own Endless Shrimp deal
  + stars: | 2024-05-21 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
First, Red Lobster got screwed by private equity. Back in 2014, the Darden restaurant group spun off Red Lobster to a private equity firm. Thai Union, under Kenny’s direction, elbowed out other shrimp suppliers, “leaving Thai Union with an exclusive deal that led to higher costs to Red Lobster,” according to the filing. And if you’re the exclusive provider of shrimp to America’s biggest seafood chain, what’d be better than making that limited-time all-you-can-eat shrimp deal a permanent menu item? The all-you-can-eat shrimp deal alone didn’t doom Red Lobster, but boy did it do some damage at a time when the chain was already buckling.
