Oil and natural gas prices traveled divergent paths this week, resulting in a mixed picture for the Club stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). In Thursday's session alone, natural gas prices jumped nearly 7%, as traders reacted to U.S. government data that showed a smaller-than-expected storage build. For the week, through Thursday's settle, natural gas has climbed 8.1%, building on last week's 11% advance. Natural gas on Friday morning jumped another 1.5%. Coterra's revenues are roughly a 50-50 split between oil and natural gas.

For the first time, scientists were able to show they can bend lightning from a storm with a laser. The project, 20 years in the making, required a super powerful laser to be shot into the sky. A powerful laser was able to deflect a lightning bolt almost 200 feet before it hit a lightning rod, greatly improving the rod's function. The Laser Lightning Rod is seen in place on top of a Swiss mountain. After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. The rise in oil prices largely boils down to a mismatch between supply and demand. The current backdrop may keep oil prices supported through the fall, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's short-term outlook published Tuesday . If higher oil prices – and by extension fuel prices – are sustained in the coming months, the investment implications may be somewhat mixed. For much of this year, the downward trend in oil prices contributed to lower year-over-year inflation readings . Shares of Pioneer "should be much higher," he said, noting the potential for more robust capital returns due to higher oil prices.

Dark RedsNot a particularly helpful designation as color in red wines can mean little. The assumption is that the darker the color the denser and more tannic the wine, but it’s not true. One exception with color: Young reds will be brighter while well-aged wines will seem duller and paler around the edges. It’s both the oldest method and newly fashionable, and produces somewhat simple wines that can be fresh and delicious. Last is the tank method, used for inexpensive sparkling wines produced in quantity, like Prosecco.

Questions of nationhood, identity and belonging loom large in three politically themed productions at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival. The tagline for this year’s edition is “community over chaos,” and there was plenty of both in “Thrown,” a National Theater of Scotland production running at the Traverse Theater through Aug. 27. When Imogen encourages Jo to take a greater interest in racial politics, this puts a strain on Jo and Chantelle’s friendship. Chantelle resents Imogen for boiling everything down to race and vents her frustration at being seen as privileged, simply because she is white.
