We're at a restaurant and notice one or two couples eating in complete silence. It always seemed like their relationship was so awkward, and I felt sympathy for the silent couples. It is one of those things where it is probably more awkward for others than it actually is for us. I no longer see silence as an indicator of a troubled relationship; it's a sign of a successful one. And before long, our toddlers will become teens and then adults, and there will be no more silence at dinner for a long time.

Was that a change in the market's character last week, or is it still the same old bull? This is generally to the good, as boring markets are bullish markets while they remain that way. Rates and commodities worries Other asset markets have also been at least inviting the question about a potential shift in character. The good news on this, as I keep insisting, is that it hasn't been a truly Fed-driven market. Though it's easy to imagine the market chafing at this kind of higher-rate, higher-growth equilibrium if it continues too much longer.

At Vinco, Farnsworth employed several of the same tactics that he had at MoviePass and at his earlier ventures. "Ted took these press releases and really treated them like they were works of art for him," Matt Argall, a former advisor to Farnsworth, told BI. Hudson Bay has not been served the lawsuit as of the publication of this story. "Hudson Bay's investment in Vinco Ventures was a standard, fixed price convertible loan of which millions remain unpaid," Hudson Bay told BI in a statement. "If served, Hudson Bay will seek to have these baseless, factually flawed and frivolous claims, which have been repeatedly dismissed in other proceedings against other parties, dismissed expeditiously."

In a sign of easing tensions between Australia and China, China said Thursday that it would lift the tariffs it placed on Australian wine more than three years ago. The tariffs, which were first imposed in 2020 amid a nasty diplomatic spat between Australia and China, had all but vaporized the country’s biggest overseas market, worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars or around $800 million at its peak. The decision to lift the tariffs was announced by China’s Ministry of Commerce. “That’s going to take some time to be depleted,” said Lee McLean, the chief executive of Australian Grape & Wine. “And China is not going to solve that on its own.”

Six years ago, Illinois farmer John Ackerman didn't hire any contract workers at all. He enjoys mentoring young people, but says it's felt harder lately to justify hiring inexperienced workers when contract workers do the same hard, physical jobs faster and better. Climate change affects all farm workers, but advocates and researchers say this is a reason to focus particularly on these workers. The USDA data showed an uptick in the number of farms using migrant labor, both within farms that already hired contract workers and overall. He’s tried reaching out H-2A workers on nearby farms, but says their supervisors won’t let them talk to him.

Mikhail Svetlov/Getty ImagesThere are no surprises over who will win Russia's presidential election this coming weekend with incumbent, Vladimir Putin, set to win a fifth term in office, keeping him in power until at least 2030. The heavily stage-managed vote taking place from Friday to Sunday is not expected to throw up any nasty surprises for the Kremlin which told CNBC months ago that it was confident Putin would win the vote comfortably. That's particularly the case in a country where Russian opposition figures are not represented on the ballot paper or in mainstream politics, with most activists having fled the country. "According to official data, Putin received 77.5% of valid votes in the 2018 presidential election that saw a turnout of 67.5%. Russian opposition activists, most in self-imposed exile in order to evade arrest, imprisonment or attack, have also condemned the election.

CNN —British pop singer Lily Allen has said that her children “complete” her, but having them “totally ruined” her career. When asked on the Radio Times podcast if she had to rethink her career strategy after having children, Allen replied: “I never really have a strategy when it comes to career, but yes, my children ruined my career.”“I mean I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom, totally ruined it,” Allen said jokingly during the interview, which was released Tuesday. “It really annoys me when people say you can have it all because, quite frankly, you can’t,” the singer added. “Some people choose their career over their children and that’s their prerogative.”Allen has seen most of her career success in the UK, with three number one hits and 15 in the Top 40. “I feel like that really left some nasty scars that I’m not willing to repeat [on my children],” Allen said.

But Covid, RSV and influenza are more serious maladies that require a thoughtful approach to resuming exercise. Turner recommended calculating your maximum heart rate and keeping it below 70% to start, which is considered light exercise. To determine your maximum heart rate, first subtract your age from 220, then calculate 70% of that. For example, a 40-year-old would have a maximum heart rate of 180 beats per minute (220 minus 40). Since 70% of 180 is 126, a 40-year-old’s heart rate should initially stay below 126 beats per minute.

The S & P 500 Volatility Index finished the week near 15 and is in a clear three- month uptrend from its mid-December low near 12, even as the S & P 500 has gained 10% since then. In fact, Friday the market minimized the headline damage to a mere two-thirds-percent dip in the S & P 500 through its signature rotational impulse. Some indicators — such as speculators remaining net short S & P 500 futures and brokerage strategists' muted index targets — imply the helpful wall of worry is not quite fully scaled. Since then, the S & P has delivered a 16.7% annualized total return, even after two bear markets and two other severe/prolonged corrections. And the S & P is only up 7% from its high 26 months ago, hardly in thin air.

Enough already: It is time to unleash Dark Brandon on this soul-sucking downer of a presidential race. And the most obvious place to begin is to invite him to the State of the Union address. This is a big moment for Mr. Biden. When he steps behind the lectern, the president needs to slap on those aviators and start throwing some strategic punches. Money market pricing shows traders are pricing in three quarter-point U.S. rate cuts for 2024. What was most startling about Tucker Carlson’s recent trip to Russia wasn’t his obsequious interview with Vladimir Putin but his gushing days afterward over how wonderful a place Moscow is. Imagine, for example, that you brought people to New York and made sure that all they saw was the Upper East Side near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They’d come away with the impression that New York is a very clean, spiffy-looking city. The truth is that while parts of Moscow offer a small elite an opulent lifestyle, Russia as a whole is more than a bit ramshackle. For many Russians, life is poor, nasty, brutish and short: Life expectancy is substantially lower than in the United States, even though America’s life expectancy has fallen and lags that of other advanced countries.
