New York/London CNN —Tupperware Brands Corporation, whose food containers have been a mainstay in American kitchens, has filed for bankruptcy. “Over the last several years, the company’s financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment,” Laurie Ann Goldman, Tupperware president and CEO, said in a statement late Tuesday. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through so-called direct sales, most commonly at “Tupperware parties,” similar to cosmetic company Avon’s business model, and only began selling in Target in 2022. Many businesses file for bankruptcy protection to wind down some operations, shed debt and cut costs. A common route, also chosen by Tupperware, is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems by restructuring.

New York CNN —Wednesday is National Cheeseburger Day, with some of the biggest chains offering some much-needed discounts amid consumer complaints about rising prices. It’s part of company’s string of deals to kickstart slumping sales, including recently extending its popular $5 value meal until December. Fast food has been a low-profit margin business with little customer loyalty. McDonald’s pricey burgers have become a flashpoint of criticism and a symbol of elevated fast food prices. So deals are particularly crucial to fast food companies at the moment to lure customers back.

The news from Bloomberg that billionaire Point72 founder and legendary stockpicker Steve Cohen will no longer trade his book for the $35 billion fund Tuesday is paradoxically both shocking and expected. Of the big multi-strategy managers, the fact Cohen was still managing a book set him apart from his main competitors. Will there be another Steve Cohen? Cohen launched SAC with $20 million in 1992; new funds today need exponentially more to justify leaving seats at funds like Point72. Japan commemorated its "Respect for the Aged Day" earlier this week, with the national holiday underscoring a somewhat problematic fact — the country has a record number of elderly citizens to celebrate. Government data released ahead of the event showed that Japan's population of people aged 65 and over had risen to an all-time high of 36.25 million. A survey from Teikoku Databank last month showed that 51% of companies across sectors in Japan feel there is a shortage of full-time employees. Meanwhile, 2023 saw the number of Japan's workers aged 65 and over rise for a 20th consecutive year to reach a record 9.14 million, Statistics Bureau data showed. Feldman warned that as these elderly workers begin to retire from the workforce, there won't be the same number of young workers stepping up to replace them.

Anadolu | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation held steady during the month of August, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday, and matched analyst expectations. Headline CPI had come in at 2% in May and June, in line with the Bank of England's target rate. Services inflation — which is closely watched by the BOE, given its dominance within the U.K. economy and its reflection of domestically-generated price rises — rose to 5.6% in August from 5.2% in July. Core inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, came in at 3.6%, up from the 3.3% recorded in July. "Despite recent data showing a stagnation in UK economic output and easing wage growth, core inflation remains sticky, with services inflation rising from 5.2% to 5.6% which will weigh heavily on the BOE's decision-making," Carter said in a note.

Tupperware products are offered for sale at a retail store on April 10, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois. Tupperware Brands Corp. and some of its subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, giving in to dwindling demand for its once-iconic food storage containers and mounting financial losses. The company's struggles resumed after a short-lived pandemic boost, when increased home cooking briefly drove demand for its colorful, airtight plastic containers. "Over the last several years, the company's financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment," Chief Executive Officer Laurie Goldman said in a press release. Tupperware has been planning to file for bankruptcy protection after breaching the terms of its debt and enlisting legal and financial advisers, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Commuters outside the Bank of England (BOE) in the City of London, UK, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate decision is scheduled for release on Sept. 19. Either way, this would be Fed's first rate cut in the current cycle. Meanwhile, money market pricing for a BOE cut at Thursday's September meeting dipped from 35% late Tuesday to 26% Wednesday morning, still slightly higher than it was last week. The move came after U.K. inflation came in at 2.2% for August, steady on July and in-line with expectations — thus backing the need for a little more caution in Threadneedle Street.
