April 12 (Reuters) - U.S. industrial conglomerate Emerson Electric Co (EMR.N) on Wednesday said it would buy measurement equipment maker NI Corp (NATI.O) for $8.2 billion in an effort to boost its automation capabilities. The purchase of Texas-based NI, which provides software-connected automated test and measurement systems, will help Emerson achieve a higher-growth and higher-margin automation portfolio. NI launched a formal sale process in January after Emerson threatened to challenge its board if it did not engage in deal negotiations. Reuters reported on Tuesday that Emerson was in advanced talks to acquire NI. Goldman Sachs & Co LLC and Centerview Partners LLC are serving as financial advisors to Emerson, while Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP is serving as legal advisor.

DUBLIN, March 12 (Reuters) - Thousands of miles from the glitz of Sunday's Oscars, the first Irish language film to earn a nomination is sparking renewed interest in a native tongue spoken by so few it is considered endangered by the United Nations cultural agency. Competing for best international feature, "An Cailín Ciúin" (The Quiet Girl) last year became the first Irish language film to gross more than 1 million euros ($1.06 million) at the UK and Irish box office. Director Colm Bairéad says the success feels like it is boosting a language he grew up feeling self-conscious about because of its rarity. Mac Conghai's production company, which creates everything from Irish language children's programmes to dating shows, has more than doubled its number of staff in the past decade. "I think it's a way of seeing the language isn't just something academic or something historical in a museum.
Alibaba and Ant venture to launch RISC-V chips for payments

The development comes as Chinese companies continue to invest heavily in chips, in the wake of U.S. export restrictions targeting China's semiconductor sector. Alibaba is one of several Chinese tech companies to pour research and development resources into RISC-V, an alternate chip architecture. The open-source nature of RISC-V's design in theory makes it less susceptible to export restrictions. In 2019, Washington imposed export restrictions on China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL), which threw the company's access to ARM designs in limbo. In late 2022, the United States launched similar export restrictions on Chinese chip fabs and research labs.
Hopes for Northern Ireland deal send sterling higher

LONDON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Sterling rose on Monday amid renewed speculation Britain and the European Union will finalise a Northern Ireland deal, which could resolve post-Brexit tensions. The deal is aimed at solving tensions caused by 2020 post-Brexit arrangements governing the British province and its open border with EU member Ireland. Sterling rose 0.36% against the U.S. dollar to $1.1982, after slipping to an almost two month low against the greenback. ING strategists agreed, saying the key focus for sterling would remain interest rate hike expectations. On the other hand, a strengthening dollar could send sterling to $1.1850 this week, ING said in a note.

Jan 23 (Reuters) - U.S. industrial software firm Emerson Electric Co (EMR.N) said on Monday it would not nominate candidates for election to the board of testing and measurement equipment maker NI Corp (NATI.O) and kept its buyout offer price unchanged. Emerson last week disclosed a hostile $53-per-share offer for NI, which it has been trying to buy unsuccessfully for several months, as it looks to capitalize on upbeat demand in the automation sector. "We are optimistic that the NI Board has commenced a process that we believe will lead to the sale of the company. NI has also confirmed Emerson will be a participant in that process," Emerson said. Emerson expects to increase its footprint in the testing and measurement market and bolster its portfolio of automation products if the offer to acquire NI goes through.

But people running factories expect that the sudden U-turn will at least deliver a recovery that will be faster than what would have followed a phased withdrawal of controls. Economically, the country should finally leave behind a pandemic that suppressed domestic demand and snarled global supply chains for three years. Jan 17 (Reuters) - U.S. industrial and software firm Emerson Electric Co (EMR.N) on Tuesday made public its offer to buy NI Corp (NATI.O) in a deal with an enterprise value of $7.6 billion after the automated testing equipment maker rebuffed earlier approaches. The software firm's all-cash bid of $53 per share represents a premium of about 13% to NI's close on Friday. Shares of NI were up 13%, at the offer price, in trading before the bell, while Emerson fell 4%. Texas-based NI, formerly known as National Instruments, specializes in making automated testing and measurement tools to aid in research and validation of new technologies. Emerson said NI has not engaged 'meaningfully' since its bid of $53 per share was made privately in November.
Jan 13 (Reuters) - NI Corp (NATI.O), a provider of testing and measuring equipment, said on Friday it was exploring strategic options after acquisition interest from companies that people familiar with the matter said include Emerson Electric Co (EMR.N). The acquisition interest from potential suitors, according to the sources, forced NI to adopt a so-called poison pill, which would be triggered if a person or a group's ownership of the firm reaches 10%. The sources, who requested anonymity as the discussions are confidential, cautioned that the talks with suitors including Emerson are subject to market conditions, and a deal is not guaranteed. Texas-based NI, formerly known as National Instruments, specializes in making automated testing and measurement tools to aid in research and validation of new technologies. In October, Emerson sold a majority stake in its climate technologies unit to Blackstone Inc (BX.N) in a deal that valued the business at $14 billion.
HONG KONG, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Shares of Chinese property developers climbed on Friday, lifted by more state support measures to bolster the highly indebted sector as China prepares to reopen its pandemic-hit economy. The property sector, which accounts for a quarter of China's massive economy, was badly hit last year after developers were unable to finish building projects that led to mortgage boycotts by some home buyers. Lockdowns and movement control measures to control the spread of COVID-19 also hurt buyer sentiment. The housing authorities also vowed to give strong support to first-time home buyers by allowing smaller down payments and cutting mortgage interest rates. BEIJING, Jan 5 (Reuters) - China's central bank and the banking and insurance regulator have established a dynamic adjustment mechanism on mortgage rates for first-time home buyers, the central bank said on Thursday, in a bid to further support the property sector. The crisis in China's property market, once a pillar of the world's second-biggest economy, worsened last summer with home prices, sales and investment all falling sharply. According to analysts' calculation, 38 cities are eligible for adjustable mortgage rate floors, including some second-tier cities such as Wuhan and Zhengzhou and more than 20 smaller cities. Analysts said the move shows the government's growing intent to support demand in weak cities, but added the impact may be limited. "Lowering mortgage rates has not been able to drive sales.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said in a statement on Wednesday that building climate-resilient wharves and establishing reliable and regular shipping services would help the prosperity and wellbeing of the people of Vanuatu. The project is part of the Vanuatu Inter-Island Shipping Support Project, which has among a number of projects, has completed two wharves. New Zealand, alongside the government of Vanuatu and the Asian Development Bank, has been a co-financier of the project since 2012. Foreign investment in wharves in Vanuatu came into the spotlight in 2018 following media reports China wanted to establish a military base in Vanuatu after funding a wharf big enough to handle large warships.
It is very premature, in my view, to think about or be talking about pausing our rate hikes. The news sent those stocks reliant on China for growth — Starbucks, Estee Lauder and Wynn Resorts, among many others — higher. Or bad news could just be bad news if weak data signals a recession ahead. And good news could be good news: for example, if China reopens and U.S. companies exposed to the region see a boost in demand. His plan includes widespread tax cuts, fewer rules and regulations for businesses and the removal of a cap on bonuses for bankers. Google searches like "do the tax cuts help me" skyrocketed, while outrage was rife on social media. Do the tax cuts equal more cash in hand? The majority of first-time buyers fall below this threshold and therefore won't benefit from the cuts, Jobson said. "The change mainly benefits high-earning first-time buyers and those with sufficient backing from the bank of mum and dad," he added.

Liz Truss U.K. prime ministerCritics, including Britain's opposition Labour party, have argued that such measures disproportionately benefit the wealthy. Questions have also been raised over how the policies will be funded, with tax cuts expected to lead to higher borrowing. Truss has argued that resultant growth will bring in more revenue which will cover those borrowing costs.
