Databricks has agreed to acquire Arcion, an enterprise data company, for about $100 million, including incentives, CEO Ali Ghodsi told CNBC ahead of an official Monday announcement. The acquisition comes after Databricks announced a $500 million funding round in September at a valuation of $43 billion. Arcion is Databricks' first acquisition since acquiring MosaicML, an AI infrastructure startup specializing in training large language models, for $1.3 billion. It's part of Databricks' AI push, and partly inspired by the tech sector's growing interest in generative AI, which can require a lot of training data. "We think we can make a lot of revenue on this particular acquisition," Ghodsi said.

A 2021 study by these researchers also dated the footprints, based on tiny plant seeds embedded in the sediment alongside them, to about 21,000 to 23,000 years ago. This paper is that corroborative exercise," added study co-lead author Kathleen Springer, also a USGS research geologist in Denver. Scientists believe our species entered North America from Asia by trekking across a land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska. The researchers also used optically stimulated luminescence dating to determine the age of quartz grains within the footprint-bearing sediments. "And just like today, if anyone walks in a similar setting, their footprints are preserved if they are covered with another layer of sediment," Springer added.

REUTERS/Sarah Mills/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Busy spots in London are being brightened up by the work of British-born artist and designer Adam Nathaniel Furman who is on a mission to create quality background art. "I have a great passion for colourful interventions in public space that are beautifully crafted," Furman said. In the London Bridge area, another of Furman's projects "A Thousand Streams" is taking shape on a long concrete wall being decorated with an intricate handmade mosaic. Furman designed the piece for the London School of Mosaic, whose volunteers are working on it with completion expected in 2024. As for the future, Furman would like to add to the landscapes of cities around the world, saying it is often artwork people value in their surroundings the most.

By Thomas EscrittERFURT, Germany (Reuters) - The convention by which Germany's far right is kept far from government regardless of how many parliamentary seats it wins was dealt another blow on Thursday when its votes were used to defeat a regional government in a crucial budget bill. Thursday's vote in Thuringia's parliament, when the far right, the conservative Christian Democrats and the pro-business Free Democrats combined to push through a tax cut against the wishes of the left-wing coalition, is the latest sign of change. But, highlighting the dilemma, the regional CDU leader Mario Voigt said such a course of action would effectively deprive him of the right to oppose. The party's regional leader, Bjorn Hoecke, is currently on trial for hate speech after uttering a slogan that stems from a Nazi chant. "We democrats have to stop the finger-pointing, sit down together and find a position that lives up to that responsibility."

Income investors love municipal bonds for their tax advantages, but they may not necessarily be making the best choice for their portfolio. The interest earned on munis is generally exempt from federal income tax and, in some cases, state tax. That means a muni bond yielding 3.7% can reach over 6% on a tax-adjusted basis for those in the highest tax bracket. For instance, if muni bonds are yielding 3% and Treasurys are at 4%, the answer is 0.75. "If your tax rate is above that number, you should buy munis," Pate said.

[1/3] A general view of damage in the historic city of Marrakech, following a powerful earthquake in Morocco, September 9, 2023. The extent of damage to Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was not yet clear on Saturday morning though most of the main historic sites in the old city appeared largely unscathed. Standing in front of a pile of rubble elsewhere in the old city, with elegant archways rising up behind it, Marrakech resident Miloud Skrout said the damage had blocked alleyways making it hard to help trapped residents. Some houses also fell in the tightly packed old city, though residents told Reuters that these appeared to be mostly uninhabited. "We are glad to see foreign tourists join to give blood following this painful event," he added.

CNN —When the Perseverance rover landed on Mars in February 2021, it wasn’t alone. NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Sciences is now using NYUAD’s map in its Mars 24 software, which maintains precise timings on Mars.
