A Feminist Answers the Question, by Caitlin MoranCaitlin Moran was giving a speech, and she was annoyed. For years, she’d been on this circuit — talking about her books, her columns, feminism and the state of womanhood. Everywhere she went, she seemed to get the same question: What was her advice for men? Moran dismissed these inquiries with a joke: “My advice to men? But it took a conversation with four boys from one daughter’s school — during a Zoom for International Women’s Day, no less — to really shake her.

Talk Modern Masculinity Is Broken. Now, with her new book, “What About Men?” Moran turns her eye to what she sees as the limited and limiting discussions around modern masculinity. If I’m going to start talking about a difficult idea, I want to approach it in the most successful way possible. Part of the framing of your book is that there’s not enough discussion about young men’s struggling to adapt to changing ideas about masculinity. Men going: “Our lives have gotten materially worse since women started asking for equality.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A bipartisan coalition of U.S. lawmakers has introduced a proposal designed to cut food waste in half by 2030. The lawmakers submitted their legislation on Thursday and said it would improve collaboration between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and regional waste prevention and food recovery organizations. The lawmakers said the proposal would also support new technological innovations and bolster the federal government's approach to food waste. Pingree said an estimated 30% to 40% of the U.S. food supply is discarded every year, and that is both bad for the environment and a contributor to food insecurity. Pingree said the proposal "would strengthen the federal government’s approach to food loss by tackling waste in every step of our food system - from prevention research and education to composting and donation programs.”The proposal would also establish an Office of Food Loss and Waste within the USDA.

Prosecutors say that in past years Mr. Winkler exceeded the limit on fluke, a spotted flat fish also known as summer flounder, by at least 200,000 pounds, and caught more black sea bass than was allowed. He is accused of making hundreds of thousands of dollars in illicit deals with of one of Montauk’s most venerable seafood institutions, Gosman’s. Gosman’s Dock boasts sprawling restaurants and retail stores in addition to its wholesale business. That could change soon: Gosman’s Dock is up for sale, priced at $45 million. Seeing the U.S. Open in an Unusual Light

The U.S. Open, which I have covered for five years for The New York Times, has no shortage of opportunities for staggering visuals. But the event is, and this will come as no surprise to anyone who has attended, absolutely crawling with photographers. All of the major wire services have multiple photographers on site, as do many newspapers and magazines from around the world. And while we all bring something different to our profession that allows us to make unique pictures, I am always thinking of ways to capture the event in a different light. And infrared is, quite literally, different light.

Thirty minutes before the gates to Arthur Ashe Stadium opened at 4 p.m. on June 22, a cluster of people began gently rolling tennis balls across a parking lot. One after the other, they lowered one knee close to the ground, extended their opposite arm, and released a tennis ball to someone 10 feet away. Closer to a locked chain-link fence, a gaggle of people started doing calisthenics as others nervously shifted their weight back and forth, tightly clutching their paper applications.

Former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows asked a federal judge Tuesday to immediately move the Georgia criminal election interference case out of state court in order to protect him from being arrested, court filings showed. As an alternative, the federal court could simply issue an order barring Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from arresting Meadows this week, his attorney proposed in the 19-page filing. Meadows and 18 other co-defendants in Willis' case, including Trump, face a Friday deadline to surrender to jail. Meadows seeks to move the state-level case to federal court. But Moran argued that Meadows "would be irreparably injured if the state criminal proceeding is not stopped."

While private debt makes up just about 10% of the $1.7 trillion student-debt mountain in the US — about $136 billion — the industry has exploded over the past decade: the amount of outstanding private debt has jumped an estimated 47% since 2014. "Regardless, the student loan debt that was supposed to be an investment in their futures is dragging them down." To be sure, some private servicers do disclose benefits private borrowers could lose should they choose to refinance. Consumer spending held up well in July as inflation slowed, with retail sales turning in a stronger-than-expected showing for the month, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. The advanced retail sales report showed a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.7% for the month, better than the 0.4% Dow Jones estimate. Excluding autos, sales rose a robust 1%, also against a 0.4% forecast. Gas station sales rose just 0.4% on the month despite rising prices at the pump. On a 12-month basis, sales rose 3.2%, which is exactly in line with the annual increase in the CPI.

Higher earners are more likely to owe an extra levy on investment earnings than a decade ago. Enacted as part of the Affordable Care Act health-care expansion, the 3.8% net investment income tax applies to capital gains, interest, dividends, rents and more once your so-called modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI, exceeds certain thresholds. MAGI can be higher than adjusted gross income because it adds back the foreign earned income exclusion. While dozens of tax code provisions adjust for inflation every year, the thresholds for net investment income tax have remained the same since 2013 — MAGI above $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married couples filing together. An estimated 7.3 million taxpayers paid nearly $60 billion in net investment income tax in 2021, compared with 3.1 million taxpayers paying $16.5 billion in 2013, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Muted Response in China to Deal Halting Rebellion

In China, state media coverage of the aborted rebellion in Russia was muted on Sunday compared with Western outlets. Most state news agencies carried short stories about the deal brokered to halt the insurrection and Moscow lifting the security measures that had been put in place. Chinese officials haven't commented publicly on the attempt by the Wagner paramilitary group and its chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, to challenge Russia's military leadership. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has aligned closely with Russian President Vladimir Putin as a bulwark against the U.S.-led West.

Following the policy announcement, Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted that rate hikes typically filter through the economy with “uncertain lags.” In other words, the Fed has been playing an (educated) guessing game, taking action before it understands the results. What’s happening: As much as Federal Reserve officials wish they could, they can’t just wave a wand and lower inflation rates. Here’s how the system works: First, the Fed raises interest rates for overnight loans between financial institutions. Less demand for goods reduces incentives to raise prices and inflation rates will fall. That means they’re able to draw their own conclusions about the trajectory of inflation rates.

CNN —A series of controversial proposals to address the airline pilot shortage is complicating Congress’ consideration of a new slate of Federal Aviation Administration policies with one senator warning fellow lawmakers there will be blood on their hands if reduced pilot training causes a fatal accident. The measures presented by lawmakers include raising the pilot retirement age, allowing more training to occur in a flight simulator rather than aircraft cockpit, and fast-tracking training programs. The measures are hotly contested and are aimed at addressing a shortage in airline pilots that was exacerbated by the pandemic. The Illinois Democrat scolded those who feel simulator training will be equivalent and said she didn’t believe reducing training hours would solve the shortage. On the House side, the House Transportation Committee narrowly approved an amendment that would raise the mandatory pilot retirement age by two years to 67.
