Kfir is the youngest of the 240 hostages Israel says were captured. Video of the incident showed a terrified Shiri clutching the children in a blanket as they were bundled into captivity. Another clip showed Yarden with a head injury from hammer blows, Ofri Bibas, Yarden's sister, said. She told reporters the family was not to be included in the expected release of 10 hostages on Tuesday. Another military spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adraee, said the family was in the area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

I co-wrote and directed ‘Maestro.’ It was very important to me, at the onset of this scene, that she be in a position of power. So, her on the windowsill, the light haloing her behind, waiting for whoever was gonna come in to be scolded. No!” “I think you’re letting your sadness get the better of you.” “This has nothing to do with me! “If you’re not careful, you’re going to die a lonely, old queen.” Mommy, daddy! And when work and caregiving conflict, women are more likely to take a step back. Most post-pandemic debate around remote work has focused on whether it’s here to stay. Some version of it seems likely: About 70 percent of workers who can do their jobs off-site still work remotely either all or some days. But if old attitudes about more flexible work resurge — outspoken executives have recently described it as “lazy,” not for leaders and a perk for those who don’t “work as hard”— then it may not matter if hybrid options are widespread. This is especially true for highly skilled jobs, because women hold the majority of college degrees.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressed Israel on Friday for a humanitarian pause in Gaza to provide relief to Palestinian civilians as worries of a wider Middle East war mount. Asked Friday what his message was to Americans in Gaza, Biden told reporters at the White House, "They'll be coming home." He did not respond to a question about whether he could contain a wider war. Nasrallah said the fighting along the border was weakening Israel and "deterring the enemy" by drawing resources away from Gaza. Biden has also called for justice for Palestinian civilians – and recently, under political pressure from his own Democratic Party, called for the humanitarian pause.

AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen my first child was born, I found myself faced with the harsh reality of no guaranteed maternity leave in the US. And, while the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) gives eligible employees 12 weeks of unpaid leave, I wasn't eligible for that. It was one of those non-negotiable parts of American work culture that I felt I had to accept. But if there's a standard of maternity leave throughout the country and company, it makes it much easier to find coverage for those nine or more months. When my maternity leave ended and I asked the school to take another year off — this time without pay but with continued job security — they were 100% understanding.

CNN —When it comes to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s grandchildren and his love for animals, it turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Schwarzenegger – who is grandfather to daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger’s two children with Chris Pratt, Lyla and Eloise – says three-year-old Lyla is especially fond of his many pets, which includes a dog, a miniature horse, a donkey and a pig. When Lyla comes to visit him, the former California governor told People in an interview published on Saturday that “the first thing that Lyla would say is, ‘Where’s Cherry?’ Which is my little dog. “Then I get the pig around and then she likes the pig and feeds the pig,” Schwarzenegger described. Let’s go out to the stable and see the horses.’ Okay, then take my hand and then we walk out to the fields and she goes to the stables and she visits the horses.”

I wheeled us right, then left, then left again. I raced it back to our street with the row of brownstones, their gracious stairs. I wasn’t strong enough to maneuver a baby in a stroller up 10 steps. And if I took him out of the stroller, the risk was high that he would lose his mind. But when my body settled, something deep inside me settled, too.

We were in Churchill, a town of roughly 900 people nicknamed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” in Canada’s Manitoba province. A male polar bear rests during a Tundra Buggy ride into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in August. People have to learn to co-exist with polar bears in Churchill, where some of them stay waiting for sea ice to refreeze. Hudson Bay polar bears are among the most vulnerable on Earth because of loss of sea ice, with their numbers in sharp decline. They arrive as soon as the sea ice breaks up to feast on small fish called capelin that spawn here.

CNN —Tori Penso watched the 2019 Women’s World Cup at home with her eight-month-old daughter in her arms. Four years and countless professional matches later, Penso will proudly walk onto the pitch with Australia and England to referee the semifinal match of the Women’s World Cup at Sydney’s Stadium Australia on Wednesday. Two years after that, Penso was selected by soccer’s world governing boy FIFA as one of six American referees to go to Australia and New Zealand for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. “If you told me six years ago that I would be here talking to you about to head to New Zealand and Australia for the Women’s World Cup I would have said no way,” she said. Curb your child's — and your own — separation anxietyNearly all children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old have some level of separation anxiety, according to Stanford Medicine. CNN —Top model Bella Hadid has explained that her absence from key fashion events this year is likely to continue, saying in an emotional Instagram post on Sunday that she will return to the catwalk when “ready,” after seeking treatment for ongoing health problems. From Bella Hadid/InstagramShe added that she was “okay,” “finally healthy” and “wouldn’t change anything for the world…it made who I am today.”Hadid has said previously that she has Lyme disease, a tick-borne disease that can commonly cause symptoms of fever, chills, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, neck stiffness, shortness of breath, headache, fatigue and a rash. CNN —American women have a problem with booze. The messaging around women and drinking has reflected women’s shift toward the dysfunctional, which may then create a vicious cycle as more women see problem drinking cast as cheeky, fun or normal. And more women may now be paying the price for this normalization of alcohol abuse. I suspect many of them are turning to alcohol as one way to dull the painful reality of isolation. None of that will end alcohol abuse, which has been a centuries-long problem.

Several employees at souvenir shops in Chinatown said that the shirts were a relatively recent addition. They started carrying them after noticing their popularity at stores in Little Italy. One employee at a Chinatown gift shop said that the store started carrying the “Daddy’s Little Meatball” shirt just two months ago. It has sold “Mommy’s Little Meatball” for the past couple of years, he said, but he has noticed sales for both increasing this summer. Ajit Biswas, who works at a gift shop on Canal Street, said that the store sold about 10 to 15 of the shirts every day, adding that “Mommy’s Little Meatball” is the more popular option.

CNN —Robert Bowers, the gunman who killed 11 worshippers at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, was convicted by a federal jury Friday on all 63 charges against him. Bowers was also convicted of 11 counts of hate crimes resulting in death. The shooting unfolded on a day when the synagogue was hosting three congregations, Tree of Life, Dor Hadash and New Light, for weekly Shabbat services. In addition to the 11 killed, two worshippers and four responding police officers were wounded. Before the shooting, Bowers spent years posting about attacks on immigrants and Jewish people on Gab, a small social media platform used by far-right extremists.

Editor’s Note: Laura Schifter is a senior fellow with the Aspen Institute and leads This Is Planet Ed, the institute’s initiative on climate change information. We won’t know for sure what it will be or where, but we can predict that these extreme weather events are becoming more common. Katharine Hayhoe, a leading climate scientist suggests one of the most important things we can do about climate change: talk about it. My second grader added, “And we can get power from the sun, compost and walk instead of drive!” We haven’t thought about this as a singular “climate change talk,” but rather as part of how we talk — how we try to help them make sense of the world. For all our kids, it’s time we prioritize their future and help ensure they can thrive in a changing climate.

The verb “see” is “doe,” uttered with a high pitch. To put the verb into past tense, you say it with a low pitch. To say that rather than mere glimpsing, you looked at something deliberately, you start on that low pitch and go even lower. And if you want to say the opposite, that you just looked something over quickly, you start high and then swoop low. Wait, wait!” This was perfectly ordinary speech, and it entailed four verbs and zero nouns or adjectives.

In the past few months, several internet giants have fallen. BuzzFeed News folded. Vice is headed for bankruptcy. Photo: Paul Chinn/The San Francisco Chronicle/Getty ImagesHeather Armstrong, one of the most successful bloggers on motherhood in the early 2000s, has died at the age of 47. The Associated Press quoted her boyfriend, Pete Ashdown, as saying she died by suicide and that he found her Tuesday night at their home in Salt Lake City.

Heather Armstrong, an explosively popular web writer and entrepreneur who, under the name Dooce, was hailed as the queen of the so-called mommy bloggers for giving millions of readers regular intimate glimpses of her joys and challenges in parenthood and marriage, as well as her harrowing struggles with depression, died on Tuesday at her home in Salt Lake City. He said he had found her body in the home. Ms. Armstrong, a lapsed Mormon from Salt Lake City, rose to prominence at the dawn of the personal blog craze of the early 2000s. Her baptism in the field came after she graduated from Brigham Young University in 1997 and moved to Los Angeles, where she taught herself HTML code and took a job at a tech company. She started Dooce.com in 2001, christening it with the nickname she had earned after committing a typo writing the word “dude” in an AOL Instant Messenger chat with friends, according to one of her stories.
CNN —Heather Armstrong, an influential writer whose blog Dooce helped popularize mommy blogging, has died, her partner, Pete Ashdown, confirmed to CNN. “Heather B. Hamilton (Armstrong) was a brilliant, funny, compassionate writer who struggled with mental-health and alcoholism,” Ashdown said in a statement to CNN. In 2004, Dooce became the first personal website to start accepting a notable number of paid ads, the New York Times said. Toward the end of her life, Armstrong was characteristically frank with readers about her struggles with alcoholism. “Calling Dooce a mommy blogger was always an inadequate description of her breadth, her style and her early influence on blogging,” New York Times reporter Katie Rogers tweeted.
It’s important for every scout — but perhaps especially for Troop 6000, which is comprised entirely of girls who are experiencing homelessness or living in shelters. Unlike most Girl Scouts, Troop 6000’s cookie sale covers all fees for the girls including trips, summer camps and other activities. The funds help the troop hold Girl Scouts activities, as well as launch programs like the Troop 6000 Transition Initiative to support scouts and their families as they transition to permanent housing. So far, 100 migrant girls have joined Girl Scouts Troop 6000. Troop 6000 offers women a chance to lead in their community, by taking on volunteer roles within their shelters’ troops.
