While GM has withdrawn most of its previously announced electric vehicle targets, the automaker believes its EV sales momentum is finally building thanks to an expanding lineup of all-electric vehicles – spanning a price range of roughly $35,000 to more than $300,000. EV sales data provided to CNBC by the Detroit automaker, which publicly reports sales quarterly, shows a notable increase for GM through August. GM sold nearly 21,000 EVs in the U.S. in July and August – almost matching its full second-quarter EV sales. GM's EV sales through August were up about 70% compared with a year earlier. It still remained more than 20,000 units shy of Hyundai/Kia EV sales through last month.

The options would have a strike price of 18 and expire in November, serving as a bet that expectations of volatility will rise as the election nears. There are no additional losses on the trade if the VIX actually declines instead.

A major exchange-traded fund and mutual fund manager finds the winning gold trade isn't talked about as much as the artificial intelligence trade — but maybe it should be. VanEck CEO Jan van Eck thinks the best investment this year is "the hedge against political cycles." But as of Friday, the VanEck Gold Miners ETF has started to outperform, up 31% this year. As for the AI trade, van Eck says it's "amazing" how investors refuse to give up on it. It's a companion to its VanEck Semiconductor ETF that excludes companies that run their own foundries, such as Intel .

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected on Monday to propose prohibiting Chinese software and hardware in connected and autonomous vehicles on U.S. roads due to national security concerns, sources told Reuters. The Biden administration has raised serious concerns about the collection of data by Chinese companies on U.S. drivers and infrastructure as well as the potential foreign manipulation of connected vehicles. The proposed regulation would ban the import and sale of vehicles from China with key communications or automated driving system software or hardware. The department plans to give the public 30 days to comment before any finalization of the rules, the sources said, adding that the department plans to propose making the prohibitions on software effective in the 2027 model year and the prohibitions on hardware would take effect in January 2029. The Commerce Department declined to comment on Saturday.

While the attack in Lebanon broke with spy agencies’ tradition by using a supply chain for an attack rather than for espionage, it could benefit Israel’s military objectives and have larger political implications.

Pagers, devices that are used every day as a crucial form of communication for health care professionals, became a deadly weapon Tuesday as thousands of them simultaneously exploded in Lebanon, killing 37 people and injuring thousands. The explosions targeted the militant and political group Hezbollah, after the devices had reportedly begun beeping and heating up. Pagers are wireless communication devices that receive radio signals from short- or long-range paging networks. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon were made to appear as if they were Gold Apollo’s AR-924 pagers, but The New York Times reported that they were actually created by Israeli intelligence workers. Following the explosions on Tuesday, Hezbollah told Al Jazeera that the “treacherous and criminal enemy will certainly be punished for this aggressive act.”How did the pagers explode?
