Fed Chairman Jerome Powell talked tough Wednesday, promising more rate hikes in the unrelenting battle against inflation, but he also let slip a few comments dovish enough to send the stock market sharply higher. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates Wednesday afternoon by a quarter point, as expected, and also kept a comment in its statement that it anticipates ongoing rate hikes. .SPX 1D line stocks Powell spoke afterward at a press conference, warning the market of more rate hikes and a tough stance on inflation. But traders seemed to cherry pick comments that had a dovish tilt to them, and the stock market reversed course and rallied hard. In its statement, the Fed swapped out the word "pace" for "extent" of future rate hikes when describing what it would take into account in in deciding on further increases.
Jan 27 (Reuters) - Ferrari have everything they need to succeed and will be chasing the title this season with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz starting on equal terms, according to new team boss Fred Vasseur. Vasseur, who joined from Swiss-based Alfa Romeo on Jan. 9 as Ferrari's fifth boss in less than a decade, told reporters via Zoom in his first media call since taking over that the target was obvious. "I think when you are a top team, you can't have another target than the win," he said. It would be a lack of ambition and I think we have everything to do a good job and the target has to be to win for sure." "The target is to win for Ferrari.

Schumacher won an unprecedented five crowns in a row from 2000-04 under Todt's leadership while Ferrari won seven constructors' championships between 1999 and the end of 2007, when Kimi Raikkonen took their last drivers' title. Vasseur, 54, is an old hand and on his third F1 team after joining Renault in 2016. The team have still not won a title since 2008 and have been making some glaring mistakes with their fans increasingly frustrated. Vasseur, who joins from Swiss-based Sauber where he ran the Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo team, has more than nationality in common with Todt. Nicolas Todt manages Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, last year's runner-up who also raced for Vasseur at Sauber in his debut season.
The data is important since the Fed has been trying to slow the hot labor market in its fight against inflation. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones also expect that the unemployment rate remained at 3.7% in December, while average hourly wage growth slowed to 0.4% from 0.6% in November. "Their forecast has the unemployment rate rising. "If you need the unemployment rate to rise, you need jobs to fall below 70,000 to 100,000." The Fed has raised interest rates seven times since last March, and the fed funds rate is now at 4.25% to 4.5%.
Quantitative tightening, or QT, could see the ECB shrink its gigantic bond portfolio. "We expect the ECB to raise its policy rates by 50 bp at the December meeting," said Michael Schumacher, an ECB watcher with Natixis, in a recent research note. "We also expect an announcement of Quantitative Tightening next year, though the ECB is unlikely to provide a specific start date at this point." Another hot topic for the ECB's Governing Council, which concludes its meeting Thursday with a press conference, will, of course, be inflation and possible peak inflation. "While Inflation likely peaked in October, we see core inflation lingering above 5% until mid 2023 before trending lower," said Anatoli Annenkov at Societe Generale in a recent research note.
ABU DHABI, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday that he expected his old rival Sebastian Vettel to make a Formula One comeback. The 35-year-old four-times champion is bowing out of the sport after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday but Hamilton believes the 53-time grand prix race winner will find the lure of F1 hard to resist. "Obviously after the change from Ferrari to Aston Martin at that time it was the first time I really thought it might be the time to stop...," he added. Vettel jokingly suggested he could agree some sort of a swap with Hamilton, who turns 38 in January but is keen on extending his Mercedes deal. "We can make a deal ... when you want to get away, maybe then (I want to come back)," he said.
Nov 16 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton has one more chance to avoid his first Formula One season without a win and it comes on Sunday in the place where last year he suffered one of the biggest blows of his career. The prospects look a lot brighter with Mercedes ending their season-long blank in Brazil last weekend with George Russell's breakthrough win. "I think he mentioned before that this race record of winning a race in every single season is less of a priority for him. Hamilton took only six races in his debut 2007 season to become a winner and has won at least once in every campaign since then. "I'm not focused on the record but of course, I'm trying to get that win this year," Hamilton said in September.
CNN —The Ferrari in which Michael Schumacher won his sixth Formula One world title has smashed auction records to become the most expensive F1 car in history. The F2003-GA sold for $14.9 million in a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, almost doubling the previous record for an F1 car when Schumacher’s F2001 fetched $7.5 million in 2017. According to Sotheby’s, Schumacher recorded five race wins, two podiums and three pole positions in the F2003-GA. In that season, the German finished just two points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen in the championship standings to claim the sixth of his seven world titles. By claiming his sixth world title, Schumacher passed Juan Manuel Fangio’s record tally and then went on to win his seventh title the following year – a number Lewis Hamilton matched in 2020.

The Fed raised its target fed funds rate Wednesday by 75 basis points, or three-quarters of a point, and said it would take into account the lagging impact of higher rates on the economy. In the futures market, traders bet the terminal rate for fed funds would reach 5.09% by May from just over 5% before the meeting. The terminal rate is the level at which the Fed is expected to stop raising interest rates. With Wednesday's hike, the fed funds target rate range is now 3.75% to 4%. Caron said the market is now projecting a rate above the Fed's median target for the terminal rate.

CNN —Red Bull driver Max Verstappen finished in first place at the Mexican Grand Prix to claim his record-setting 14th win of the season on Sunday. Earlier in October, Verstappen claimed his second career world championship at the Japanese Grand Prix, and last week he won the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which saw him share the record for number of season race wins. Red Bull pitted their drivers first, opting for medium tires while Hamilton fitted hard tires so that he would not have to pit again. RBR were found to have breached the cost cap by £432,652 ($501,409). That comes in from now, it has a direct effect on next year’s car and it will be in place for a 12-month period.”Two races remain on the F1 calendar for Verstappen to add to his record tally with the Brazilian Grand Prix scheduled on November 13 and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 20.

CNN —Max Verstappen fought back after pit-stop drama to win the US Grand Prix on Sunday, handing Red Bull the constructors’ championship on an emotional weekend for the team. The Dutchman’s victory came just one day after it was announced that owner and co-founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz, had died aged 78. The stop lasted over 11 seconds with Red Bull mechanics scrambling for a replacement wheel gun after Verstappen’s front left tire was not tightened sufficiently. Verstappen poses with the Red Bull team to celebrate winning the constructors' championship. “A very emotional moment, a big moment for the team and for everyone at Red Bull,” he told reporters.
"That one was for Dietrich," said Verstappen after taking the chequered flag. Ferrari had needed to score 19 points more than Red Bull at the Texas track but Charles Leclerc was the Italian team's sole finisher, fighting his way to third from 12th on the grid. Red Bull now have an unbeatable 656 points to Ferrari's 469. The Dutch 25-year-old secured his second title in Japan two weeks ago. Red Bull's Sergio Perez was fourth with Russell, who secured a bonus point for fastest lap, fifth and Lando Norris sixth for McLaren.

At the same time Red Bull can clinch their first constructors' championship since 2013. If Ferrari fail to score 19 points more than Red Bull in Texas, the contest is over. "If we can make a step, hopefully, we can get into the fight with the Ferraris and the Red Bulls," said trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin. Mexican fans will be relishing the battle for second place in the drivers' championship, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez only a point ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The Circuit of the Americas is celebrating its 10th anniversary as U.S. Grand Prix host and organisers expect a record 440,000-strong three-day crowd as the sport continues to surge in popularity in America.

CNN —Max Verstappen was crowned Formula One world champion in bizarre circumstances following a dominant victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. So when Verstappen finished, he initially only celebrated a race victory – his 12th of the season – and completed his first post-race interview accordingly. I am hearing different things,” Verstappen said, after he was initially crowned world champion during a second post-race interview. It was confirmed again, and he sat down in front of a ‘World Champion’ banner in a throne room. “Am I the world champion?” Verstappen asked Jensen Button before his interview on the podium.
(A basis point equals 0.01 of a percent) Besides the rate hike, the market is intently focused on the terminal rate. Expectations for the Fed's terminal rate also soared. Before the August CPI report, the futures market was pricing in a terminal rate at just about 4% for next April. In the futures market, "the terminal rate went up 40 basis points in 24 hours," he said. But NatWest Markets expects the Fed could indeed have a terminal rate of 5%.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury was last at 3.5279%, down by 4 basis points. Meanwhile, the policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury declined by 2 basis points and was last at 3.9418%. Analysts are broadly expecting a 75 basis point hike, but some think the central bank will go beyond this to 100 basis points. That would mark the largest interest rate hike in 40 years. But even that may not be enough, Michael Schumacher, head of macro strategy at Wells Fargo Securities, told CNBC's "Fast Money," explaining that while he is expecting a 75 basis point hike, he would argue for a 150 basis point hike as he believes rates are headed higher still.
But Wells Fargo Securities' Michael Schumacher suggests the Federal Reserve is raising rates too slowly, telling CNBC's "Fast Money" he would seriously consider a 150 basis point hike this week if he were Chair Jerome Powell. But of course, the Fed won't do that." The key is policymakers need to convince investors the historical jump in rates is frontloaded, according to Schumacher. "It would do a huge move and then stop or stop pretty soon. Based on this month's CNBC Fed Survey, the Street believes the Fed will lift rates by 75 basis points on Wednesday.
