For example, the tech sector’s valuations are generally lower than they were then, though still elevated. One is that the fundamentals of the tech sector are detached from its price action. While the sector’s earnings have performed better than the rest of the market on average, earnings expectations have been rising faster than actual subsequent earnings performance. Many parallels between the dot-com bubble and today’s market have been called to light in recent weeks. Only time will tell if tech stocks are in a bubble that's due to burst.

The so-called Magnificent Seven stocks are showing behavior consistent with major asset bubbles through history, according to Bank of America. Looking at variables including catalysts for the surge, the price of money (i.e., interest rates), share prices and valuation, Hartnett sees similarities between the Magnificent Seven and some of the other big bubbles going back centuries. As far as what could pop the bubble, he cited tightening financial conditions and rising real interest rates. From a valuation standpoint, the Magnificent Seven is currently 20% above its 200-day moving average. "It ain't cheap but true that bubble highs have seen dafter valuations," Hartnett wrote.

Haley, Trump's former U.N. ambassador and his last major rival in the GOP presidential race, has been condemning Trump's remarks for days about her husband Michael Haley, who is deployed in Africa with the National Guard. Biden has also excoriated Trump for his remarks about NATO, calling them “dangerous," “un-American,” and “shocking." Both Biden, 81, and Trump, 77, face widespread questions among voters about their age and readiness for a second term. They have something in common.”Though Haley has had more campaign appearances lately than Trump, she did not appear at any events Wednesday. “You’re a much better candidate for me than you were for yourself,” Trump told Scott.

Meanwhile, investors have cut their cash levels to 4.2% from 4.8%, the survey said. "Most bullish FMS in 2 years ... investors go all-in on U.S. tech," Hartnett wrote in a note to clients. For the first time since April 2022, investors became confident enough to predict that the U.S. economy would skirt a recession, the BofA survey showed. The proprietary indicator gauges when inflows or outflows related to stock-based funds point to investors moving too far to either side. Hartnett highlighted a few contrarian trades for a hard landing scenario, which includes going long cash and defensive stocks, and short technology companies.

Investor sentiment has turned so bullish that Bank of America's Michael Hartnett thinks it's time to consider a few contrarian trades. For the first time since April 2022, investors stopped predicting a recession in the U.S., the BofA survey showed. The Wall Street firm's widely followed investment strategist Hartnett is recommending a few contrarian trades for a "hard landing" scenario this year. He said investors could go long cash and defensive stocks, while shorting technology shares that have led the market rally over the past year. For a "no landing" scenario, where the economy would continue to grow but inflation stays high, the strategist recommends buying commodities, energy stocks as well as the greenback.

Trump is giving every impression that his second term would be even more aberrant than his first, as he vows to use presidential power to exact retribution against his enemies. While a Biden vs. Trump race would be a rematch of 2020, it would not necessarily be the same. In Trump, voters can pick an ex-president facing 91 criminal charges who has been found liable for fraud, sexual battery and defamation in court. It also offered a potential roadmap to the substance and character of his possible second term. Why the 2020 election lineup may be locked inThe renewed focus on Biden’s age is likely to open another round of speculation about whether he could be replaced on the Democratic ticket.

New York CNN —Is Wall Street’s favorite clique of tech stocks in need of a makeover? Most of the Magnificent Seven stocks have reclaimed their leadership of the market this year, with shares of Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Microsoft reaching record highs. Many investors are skeptical that the Magnificent Seven will match their blockbuster gains from 2023, even if they continue their leadership this year. Jim Worden, chief investment officer at the Wealth Consulting Group, says he believes the group should consolidate to the “Fab Five,” which he classifies as the Magnificent Seven minus Tesla and Apple. “There is a big leadership change underway in the Magnificent Seven stocks,” wrote Louis Navellier, chairman of Navellier & Associates, in a note on Tuesday.

When Nikki Haley conceded her deflating third-place defeat in the Iowa caucuses this month, the first person she thanked was nearly 8,000 miles away. “I want to say to my husband, who is deployed, who I know may or may not be watching this right now — Michael, I love you,” she said, standing in front of a row of American flags. “What keeps me going at night is that we sleep under the same stars.”It was an unusually personal and almost saccharine note for a politician known for her tough exterior. Aly Song | ReutersBEIJING — More U.S. companies are finding it harder to make money in China than before the pandemic, raising concerns that businesses may not stay long. "It is concerning when our member companies are not profitable," Michael Hart, AmCham China president, told reporters Thursday. It found that by far, the main reason for respondents to increase investment in China was to remain competitive there. Asked Thursday about those efforts, AmCham China Chair Sean Stein noted the measures incorporate suggestions from foreign business chambers in China, but AmCham would like Beijing "to make more tangible progress." Rising U.S.-China tensions were the top concern for members for a fourth-straight year, the AmCham survey found.

"For those of you younger than us who did not live through the Tech Bubble of the late 1990s, you are now living through Tech Bubble 2.0. As a reminder, the NASDAQ fell about 80% when that bubble burst in the mild recession of the early 2000s," Wolfenbarger said. While it's not as high as it was during the dot-com bubble, it's higher than it was in 1929 — and is at one of its most elevated levels in history. The group’s name, an allusion to a 1960s western starring Steve McQueen, was coined by the Bank of America analyst Michael Hartnett early last year. It consists of Google’s parent, Alphabet; Amazon; Apple; Facebook’s parent, Meta; Microsoft; Nvidia; and Tesla. These stocks rose an average of 105 percent in 2023, led by Nvidia. Microsoft itself rose 57 percent. The S&P 500 index also had a good run in 2023, much better than was expected at the start of the year, when inflation and higher interest rates clouded the outlook.

Ms. Haley was earning a salary of just $22,000 as a part-time state legislator. Wilbur Smith executives regarded Ms. Haley as overqualified for the accounting job. But because of her wide-ranging network, they would later say, they put Ms. Haley on a retainer, asking her to scout out potential new business. She never found any, a top executive later said. A new one-page indictment delivered by the grand jury Friday alleges Baldwin caused Hutchins' death — either by negligence or “total disregard or indifference” for safety. Defense attorneys for Baldwin indicate they'll fight the charge, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months. The indictment provides prosecutors with two alternative standards for the felony involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin. Mangels said a grand jury indictment is by no means an assurance that prosecutors will prevail at trial. “Just getting an indictment from a grand jury in no way means the prosecution has a slam dunk case or even a strong case,” she said.

Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. Trump misspelled Nimarata as “Nimrada” as he attacked her in a new post on his social media platform Truth Social. For visitors to New Zealand, the chance to see a haka, the ceremonial Maori dance, has long been as much a part of the country’s allure as its glaciers, geysers and glowworm caves. But increasingly, instead of merely catching a cultural performance en route to New Zealand’s Fiordland, travelers are lingering longer and going deeper, seeking out more immersive ways to engage with the country’s Indigenous heritage. “We’re seeing a shift from the checkbox mentality to a hunger for deep, transformative experiences,” said Sarah Handley, the general manager for North America and Europe at Tourism New Zealand, the country’s tourism marketing agency. “It’s not just about witnessing a haka; it’s about understanding the meaning and stories behind it.”

The key catalyst for stocks will likely continue to be the expected trajectory of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. In September, historically the weakest month for stocks, the S&P 500 fell nearly 5%. The S&P 500 gained nearly 9% gain in November, historically a strong month for the index. Overall, December has been the second-best month for the S&P 500, with the index up an average of 1.54% for the month since 1945, according to CFRA. Many other names have languished: The equal-weighted S&P 500, whose performance is not skewed by big tech and growth stocks, is up around 6% in 2023.

Here are the indicators he's watching in 2024, and the trades investors should make now so that when the bull market finally arrives, they will be well-positioned to profit. Bank of America, alongside BMO, believes that the S&P 500 could beat its all-time high and soar over 5,000 next year. But in the back half of 2024, Hartnett believes the "3Cs" and the "3Ps" will combine to kick off a bull market in the "3Bs": bonds, bullion, and breadth. "Bonds can easily deliver equity-like returns in 2024," Hartnett wrote, particularly if "a weaker US economy & Fed cuts delivers cyclical decline in bond yields & US dollar (+ve gold)." Hartnett wrote that any panic policy moves could be a "catalyst for outperformance of leverage over quality, small over large, value over growth, international over US."
