Much of it ends up at a plant operated by the Warsan Waste Management Company. “Around 45% percent of Dubai’s total waste comes to this facility,” says Tim Clarke, the company’s CEO. Operational since March of this year, the Warsan plant will use 2 million metric tons of trash annually to produce electricity, enough to power approximately 135,000 homes, according to the company. However, since the plant produces power, replacing the burning of fossil fuels, Warsan Waste Management believes the overall result is positive. But some environmental groups, such as Zero Waste Europe, argue that burning waste to generate electricity discourages efforts to cut waste and initiatives to increase recycling.

Gold and silver bars of various sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metals dealer Pro Aurum in Munich. Gold, silver and platinum prices have been on a tear so far this year, and strategists say the precious metals could continue to hit fresh record highs over the coming months. Spot silver prices, meanwhile, traded 0.5% lower at around $29.54 per ounce. Strategists at Saxo Bank said in a recent research note that gold prices could soon test the $2,400 level, silver may climb as high as $30, while platinum has upside potential to reach $1,130. The Danish bank said Wednesday that its "year of the metals" theme had continued to gather momentum in recent weeks, citing its preference for gold, silver and copper.

Three years after Biden administration officials tightened sanctions on a billionaire Israeli mining executive for corrupt business practices in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they have reversed themselves and are offering the executive a deal they hope will bolster the supply of a metal vital to electric vehicles. The plan would allow the executive, Dan Gertler, to sell off his remaining stakes in three giant copper and cobalt mining operations in Congo. Once Mr. Gertler sells his positions, the Biden administration hopes Western-leaning companies will be more willing to invest in Congo, perhaps delivering a greater supply of cobalt to the United States as automakers race to increase domestic production of batteries. But certain State and Treasury Department officials strongly opposed the effort, saying that Mr. Gertler should not be allowed to profit from his deal-making, which the Biden administration earlier argued had cheated the citizens of Congo out of more than $1 billion in mining revenues.

Now, after the lab team’s decade of close collaboration with scientists at Google, that data has turned into the most detailed map of a human brain sample ever created. The result is an interactive 3D model of the brain tissue, and the largest dataset ever made at this resolution of a human brain structure. And of course, it would reveal many more problems, things we hadn’t expected.”What about mapping an entire human brain? “Much of what we think we understand about the human brain is extrapolated from animals, but research like this is critical for revealing what truly makes us human. “Each human brain is a vast network of billions of nerve cells,” said Sporns, distinguished professor of psychological and brain sciences at Indiana University.

Copper futures hit a record high on Wednesday as demand for the base metal stays strong amid a rush to build data centers and the continued electrification of the global economy. It is integral to manufacturing electric vehicles, power grids and wind turbines, especially as the global economy electrifies. The International Energy Agency is expecting power demand from data centers to more than double to over 1000 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2026 from 460 TWh in 2022. Copper production growth forecast for 2024 has been cut to 0.5% compared with a 3.7% growth estimated by ICSG last October 2023. Anglo American, a major producer, said it would cut copper output in 2024 and 2025 as it seeks to cut costs.

Citigroup analysts upgraded India to "overweight" from "neutral" in their emerging markets allocation on Friday, citing strong earnings and economic growth momentum. It also attributed India's one-year forward price-to-earnings (P/E) of 20x, which is slightly higher than the long-term averages, to a stable earnings trajectory. The brokerage remains "overweight" on India's banks, insurers, public sector enterprises, autos and capital goods companies among others. Citi downgraded China to "neutral" from "overweight", saying the recent rally in its stock markets occurred despite weakening fundamentals. Citi reiterated its "overweight" rating on Taiwan and Korea, maintaining "underweight" on Latin American countries.

CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday detailed the medical abnormality he experienced in 2010 that he said was caused by a worm that entered his brain and then died, marking his first public explanation of the incident. “The issue was resolved more than 10 years ago and he is in robust physical and mental health. Questioning Mr. Kennedy’s health is a hilarious suggestion, given his competition,” the campaign said, referring to the advanced ages of the 81-year-old President Joe Biden and 77-year-old former President Donald Trump. So, ten times what, you know, the EPA levels were for blood mercury, I think it was,” Kennedy said. And I had that chelated out and all of that brain fog went away.”Kennedy said he has made a full recovery from both health incidents.

Biden Looks to Thwart Surge of Chinese Imports
  + stars: | 2024-05-08 | by ( Jim Tankersley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden is warning that a new surge of cheap Chinese products poses a threat to American factories. China’s lavish subsidies, including loans from state-run banks, have helped sustain companies that might otherwise have folded in a struggling domestic economy. The result is, in many cases, a significant cost advantage for Chinese manufactured goods like steel and electric cars. The U.S. solar industry is already struggling to compete with those Chinese exports. Chinese exports are washing over the continent, to the chagrin of political leaders and business executives.

In 2010, Kennedy, now 70, experienced severe memory loss and mental fog, he said in a deposition two years later. Robert Kennedy said at the time that his earning power had been negatively affected by the cognitive issues, the Times reported. Kennedy told the paper he has recovered from the memory loss and brain fogginess and that the parasite did not require treatment. The worms get nutrients from the body, but they are not eating the brain tissue, he said. It’s more common to find the worm after it has died and left behind a calcified cyst in the brain, Hotez said.

Trade with Russia has slumped in the first quarter amid tightening US sanctions, the Financial Times said. After a December executive order bolstered its sanctioning power, the department has amplified warnings against foreign lenders that facilitate trade with Russia. At the same time, the US' crackdown has proliferated trade in the Russian ruble, as other currencies increasingly fall out of favor. That's as foreigners are still free to buy rubles on the Moscow Exchange when settling payments with Russian parties. AdvertisementStill, the ruble faces restricted convertibility, making it difficult to reach trade volumes once possible under the dollar.

Gold rises on Fed rate cut hopes, Middle East tensions
  + stars: | 2024-05-06 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices ticked higher on Monday, as expectations that the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates later in the year and tensions in the Middle East lifted bullion's appeal. "Investors will look at the political situation in the Middle East and how the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire play out. "Weaker U.S. data offers more policy flexibility for the Fed in terms of rate cuts," paving way for gold prices to stabilize, said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong. Markets are pricing in a 67% chance of a U.S. rate cut in September, as per CME's FedWatch Tool. Meanwhile, the Perth Mint's gold product sales in April jumped two-fold from a month earlier, while silver sales fell to their lowest since December.

Gold bracelets at a gold jewelry store in the Zhejiang Province of China. Thousands of people in China have been duped into forking out money on "fake gold" — inferior or artificial gold — after trying to purchase so-called "999 gold" online, according to the government. The purest form of gold is commonly referred to as 999 gold, because it has gold content of 99.9%. "Fake gold is becoming a major problem in China as more Chinese are looking to put their savings into gold," said China Market Research Group's Managing Director Shaun Rein. Fake gold gets darker or reveals a greenish color when placed under flame, while pure gold turns brighter on exposure to heat.
