Some Nebraska residents are complaining about discarded chicken parts from Costco's operations. Residents said the smell from discarded poultry was "unbearable," the Nebraska Examiner reported. David City Mayor Alan Zavodny also expressed concern that composting operations were near the city's water wells, the Examiner reported. Bones and other discarded parts from dead chickens can be piled up at the chicken barns themselves, the Examiner reported, citing state laws. "It was just the smell of death," Greg Lanc, a farmer who lives within a mile of nearly 50 chicken barns, told the Examiner.

The more expensive meal promotion successfully brought customers in, and "drove the highest weekly digital transactions ever in the US business," Kempczinski said in the October earnings call. Taco Bell is seeing similar success with pricier menu items like the grilled cheese burrito, YUM Brands CEO David Gibbs said in a November earnings call. In New York City, a Mexican Pizza costs $6.49, and a double steak grilled cheese burrito goes for $6.79, about double the cost of lower-priced burritos on the menu. Analysts have praised both the grilled cheese burrito and adult Happy Meal as smart strategies driving sales.
Six Panera workers across the US told Insider about stolen drinks at their stores. "The most stolen beverages by far are the caffeinated lemonades," a manager in Michigan told Insider. We are always innovating to optimize the entire guest and associate experience including our USC membership," the company told Insider in a statement. "We're told it's not that big of a deal, which I actually agree with," a West coast worker told Insider.

Sam's Club just reduced the price of its hot dog and soda combo to $1.38. Sam's Club recently raised membership prices, but still remains less expensive than Costco. Sam's Club's hot dog is famously in competition with Costco's version of the deal, still priced at $1.50. The chicken bake increased by $1, and the soda cost increased by 10 cents, although it did not impact the price of the hot dog and soda combo. The updated hot dog and soda price is already displayed online on Sam's Club's website.

I don't frequent Panera, so I ran into the same issue that I faced last time in the drive-thru where I found it difficult to take in the menu before ordering, and I wished there was a way to order in the app for drive-thru pickup. Mary Meisenzahl/Insider
Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A are both displaying warnings in their apps about potential lettuce shortages. Taco Bell's mobile app displays a banner that says "National Lettuce Shortage" in bold lettering, warning customers that "Due to an industry shortage, we may be out of this ingredient at your local restaurant." Taco BellChick-fil-A has a similar message for customers under the headline "Lettuce Supply Chain Challenges," saying that "some menu items may be unavailable or prepared differently." Chipotle is not currently having lettuce supply issues, the company said. High lettuce prices are the result of a diminished supply that can't meet the large demand.

Seven workers told Insider that their stores were slower than expected. Seven Chipotle workers across the US told Insider that their stores saw lower traffic than expected and didn't meet sales projections. This is in complete contrast to 2021, when workers told Insider about long lines, staying late to finish cleaning, and even some workers walking off the job. Outside of the Boorito promotion, Chipotle has raised prices several times over the last year and a half, most recently in August, when the chain raised prices for a burrito by about 50 cents to $1 each. In the first quarter of 2022, Chipotle raised menu prices by 4%, CFO Jack Hartung told investors.

McDonald's is taking the McRib on its fourth farewell tour. A farewell tour is more of a "call to action" than a sign the McRib will actually leave menus, an analyst said. McDonald's has held three other farewell tours for the sandwich, in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Taco Bell famously removed potatoes and the Mexican Pizza from menus only to return both within a year, saying demand for the Mexican Pizza was seven times higher after its return. When dishes like Mexican pizza or the McRib return, they already have a built-in fanbase among customers.

The $300 skeletons sold out by the end of September, ahead of Halloween. In October of 2022, the skeletons remain sold out at Home Depot and getting one isn't easy. "We encourage all our customers that experience this to reach out to local law enforcement," Home Depot told Insider in a statement.

Chipotle saw a huge bump in in-store sales as digital sales dropped slightly. In-store sales were up 22% in the third quarter of 2022 over the same period in the previous year, while digital sales were down 6% to make up 37% of all sales. Despite tides turning a bit toward more in-store orders, Chipotle is still investing in digital infrastructure. Chipotle has been especially optimistic about digital sales through its so-called Chipotlane drive-thrus, of which there are now more than 300. After two years as a digital promotion, the Halloween Boorito promotion is returning to stores this year.
