Marty Krofft, who, with his brother Sid, created a string of television shows that captured audiences from Saturday morning to prime time, including fantastical children’s fare, like “H.R. Pufnstuf” and “Land of the Lost,” and variety shows, like “Donny and Marie,” died on Saturday in Los Angeles. But Krofft shows, which featured extravagant puppets and scenery, were often expensive to produce and sometimes had premises that could be a hard sell; one show, for instance, focused on magical, talking hats. Marty’s business acumen and ability to woo studio executives ensured that some of the strangest programs ever to appear on the small screen actually got made. “Sid was always ‘the artist,’” Marty was quoted as saying in “Pufnstuf & Other Stuff: The Weird and Wonderful World of Sid & Marty Krofft” (1998), by the critic David Martindale.

LONDON (AP) — A man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut by a skate during a game, was released on bail Wednesday. He was arrested on Tuesday, and released on bail on Wednesday pending further inquiries. Petgrave skates toward Johnson and collides with another Panthers player. Petgrave's left skate kicks up as he begins to fall and the blade hits Johnson in the neck. It would be rare, but not unprecedented, for a hockey player to be charged.

At the time of its 1986 New York City Opera world premiere across the Lincoln Center Plaza, its controversial subject and unconventional musical idiom would have been unthinkable at the conservative Met; today, it is part of a vigorous company initiative predicated on the idea that new operas attract new audiences. The times have finally caught up with “X,” even as the events that it chronicles have receded into the more distant past.

U.S. asset manager Fidelity International is highlighting China's looser monetary policy and the government's recent 1 trillion yuan ($137.10 billion) borrowing-and-spending sovereign bond plan as a tailwind for the country's stock markets. London-based £3 billion fund manager Somerset Capital Management likewise finds China exciting. The stock market has yet to recover, but has stabilised. Morgan Stanley estimates long-only foreign investors now have their deepest underweight positions in China and Hong Kong equities in years. Chinese stocks could see a short-term sentiment pick-up given foreign funds have such light positions in the market, said Redmond Wong, Greater China market strategist at Saxo Markets.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - A lively crowd gathered on a sunny Sunday in San Francisco to protest a meeting of cross-Pacific political leaders and a wide spectrum of other issues, prominently including those calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. The home of 1960s counterculture, San Francisco has retained an anti-authoritarian sensibility even as tech companies and employees have made the city a global influencer. The action could become confrontational on Wednesday, with protesters calling to block attendees from entering the San Francisco conference center. If only the field were smaller, the thinking went, surely Mr. Trump would be defeated. This line of thinking became an excuse for candidates who didn’t want to take any real swings at Mr. Trump. It was the field — not Mr. Trump — that was the problem. And even as Mr. Trump’s opponents dropped out, some of their voters wound up drifting to Mr. Trump as a second choice, keeping him at the head of the pack. While there is some truth that having more candidates helps Mr. Trump win the nomination, consolidating the field alone is not likely sufficient to defeat him.

The good times on Wall Street could be just beginning according to a reliable and rare market indicator. When this happens, the S & P 500 averages a 23.3% gain over the following 12 months and is up 100% of the time, history shows. The gauge — a ratio developed by legendary investor Marty Zweig — is used to determine market momentum, particularly the start of a potential move higher. This buy signal came as the S & P 500 wrapped up its biggest weekly gain of the year. Detrick thinks the S & P 500 can end 2023 between 4,600 and 4,700.

Travis Kelce before a game against the Los Angeles Chargers on October 22, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. Travis Kelce has made more than $70 million throughout his career in the National Football League, but he still remembers how he spent his first paycheck. Kelce says he spent around $10,000 on the limited-edition sneaker, which are replicas of the futuristic shoes Michael J. "I spent way too much money in clubs, and I was avoiding the rent lady," he said. Following a five-year $46 million contract extension in 2016, Kelce signed another four-year extension in 2020, worth just over $57 million.

The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place. In this way, the DVD service acted more as an overstuffed old-school video store.

(AP) — South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem has requested guidance from the state’s Supreme Court about conflict-of-interest rules for lawmakers, several weeks after a South Dakota state lawmaker resigned and agreed to repay $500,000 in federal COVID-19 relief that she received for her day care business. Doing so violated a state Supreme Court advisory warning state lawmakers that it is unconstitutional for them to accept federal pandemic funding. Noem, Attorney General Marty Jackley and two Republican lawmakers have sent letters to the court seeking clarity on what else is illegal, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported Thursday. Schoenbeck added that, depending on the court’s ruling, a number of lawmakers may need to resign or pay the state back for services received.

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) and the union representing its players have been in contact regarding further safety measures after a player in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League died when an opposing player's skate blade cut his neck. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. The NHLPA also educates players each year on the benefits of wearing the cut-resistant equipment so they can make informed equipment choices.

By the end of his first year in the National Football League, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was "damn near dead broke," he said on his weekly "New Heights" podcast in May. "I had my eyes on a pair of size 13 Nike Air MAG 'Marty McFlys' — the coolest shoes that I'd ever seen in my life," Travis said. "As soon as I got my check, I immediately went online and sourced them." A shoe collector, Travis said he spent around $10,000 on the limited edition sneaker. "Somebody came up to me and told me that you had bought those shoes and I looked up how much they were and I remember being like, 'What the f--- , Travis,'" laughed Jason.

The body of Deputy Deanna Esmaeel was discovered Thursday at the residence in coastal Crescent City, California, the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Authorities in Curry County, Oregon, found Walter's black Mazda sedan on Friday and he was arrested a short time later, officials said. In the meantime, House Republicans have no clear leader heading into next year's election as they cling to a razor-thin majority. The leadership fund will shift its alignment to follow the new House speaker once one is elected. McCarthy visiting a district could often be a major draw, juicing fundraiser proceeds, though that’s a role any new House speaker can grow into. “That’s where McCarthy has crushed it,” said Cam Savage, a longtime Republican strategist who works on House races. “After this week’s chaotic episode, House Republicans have basically upgraded to a Disney fast-pass in their never-ending roller coaster ride to the radical right,” said Viet Shelton, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s House campaign arm.

Baron’s book comes at a perilous moment for American democracy and the news media tasked with covering its erosion. I think the coverage of the latest chaos has been very good, based on what I’ve read. The party is proving to be ungovernable, and that is wreaking havoc on the country as a whole. I’d like to see substantially more coverage of what a second Trump administration would do upon taking office. If news organizations believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy and the country’s framework of government, should they remain totally neutral in covering his candidacy?

Earlier this year, the federal government committed to ratcheting up efforts to root out child labor law violations. “There are currently [Wage and Hour Division] investigations open at Perdue and Tyson Foods,” a Department of Labor spokesperson told CNN. “We are conducting a comprehensive third-party audit of child labor prevention and protection procedures including a compliance audit of contractors,” she said. Government agencies have joined together this year to fight child labor law violations, which often impact migrant children. In February, the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services jointly announced the creation of a task force designed to fight child labor exploitation.

The Biden administration rule — which took effect Jan. 30 — was one facet of a White House effort to address climate change. Biden's ESG rule replaced a regulation issued by the Trump administration.
