Roberto De Zerbi’s side is everything this United team is not at the moment: exciting, slick, cohesive, fast-paced and inventive. But perhaps the worst part of the defeat for United fans is that it wasn’t all that surprising. Boos rang out around Old Trafford at the end of the match – even when new signing Rasmus Højlund was substituted for Anthony Martial after 64 minutes. “We have to be very disappointed and annoyed at ourselves,” ten Hag told reporters. Former United striker Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his old club on Saturday.

The new testimony comes as House Republicans begin an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his family, potentially undercutting one element of that effort. At issue is an October 2022 meeting between prosecutors and case agents working on the Hunter Biden investigation. But the deal fell apart amid scrutiny from a judge, and Weiss subsequently requested special counsel status. Shapley, a 14-year IRS veteran who oversaw parts of the Hunter Biden probe, alleged in testimony to Congress there was political interference in the investigation. Last week, CNN and others reported on Sobocinski’s testimony, which prompted Shapley’s attorneys to dispute his recollection of the October 2022 meeting.

Ahead of the High Holidays that begin this week, a network of Jewish security experts and religious leaders hosted several webinars to help prepare for the season. Among the topics: How to respond to an “active threat” targeting the Jewish community, and how to stop severe bleeding. Over recent years — in the face of increased antisemitic threats and violence — the season also is a time of heightened vigilance. “The High Holidays are about renewal — about trying to build a better world,” said Rabbi Noah Farkas, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. In London, an Elevated but Edgy Jewelry Style

In 2006, Ms. Martin established her namesake brand, which is focused on opulent, sculptural, genderless pieces in gold. Since then, she has weathered the expensive business of operating a fine jewelry business through recessions, lockdowns and other challenges to run a self-funded business with a showroom in a former grain warehouse in the Clerkenwell neighborhood of London. She is a walking advertisement for her latest venture, HMp (or Hannah Martin Pierced), a line of piercing jewelry and a piercing service. Overall, she hopes it will transform what is often a back-alley tattoo parlor-style experience to one that is elevated through handcrafted gold jewelry and premium customer care. “I couldn’t find one that wasn’t really ugly, so I thought I’d better make one,” Ms. Martin, 43, said during a recent interview at her Brutalist-inspired studio.

Aston Martin will keep the upgrades coming

LONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Aston Martin will keep the upgrades flowing after going into Formula One's August break with Fernando Alonso third in the championship behind Red Bull's dominant leader Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. With both titles a foregone conclusion, champions Red Bull -- winners of all 12 races so far -- and some others are turning their attention to next year's car but Aston Martin have other ideas. Aston Martin enjoy more wind tunnel time than top rivals as a consequence of their low ranking last year. After 12 of the 22 races last year, Aston Martin were languishing in ninth place and had scored only 19 points compared to their current haul of 196. More militaries are turning to F-35s for their air forces, a former Lockheed Martin exec said. Tom Burbage told Newsweek that the adoption of F-35s frees up F-16s for air forces like Ukraine's. It says the aircraft would boost its air force, which is currently made up of Soviet-era jets. Experts say that Ukraine receiving advanced jets could help to deter Russia's air force, which hasn't played a notable role in the invasion due to Ukraine's advanced air defense systems. Retired Air Marshal Greg Bagwell, a former senior commander in the UK's air force, told Newsweek that F-16s are "slowly becoming 'surplus' because of the F-35 orders."

"This (deal) really kicks off that wing of the Lucid Group's business," CEO Peter Rawlinson told Reuters. Lucid's initial focus will be on providing high-performance, ultra-high voltage technology that would not be suitable for the mass-market, reflected in the Aston deal, Rawlinson said. However, he continued, its business licensing out parts should grow as the company moves to more mass-market models. Aston and Lucid share a common shareholder in Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), but Rawlinson said the Saudi wealth fund played no role in the deal. "Aston Martin had options and they chose quite independently what they felt is the best technology available on the planet," he added.

A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.
