President Joe Biden announced plans to boost U.S. funding to slash deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest and to help developing countries combat climate change during a meeting with world leaders on Thursday. The president, during a virtual meeting with the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, committed $500 million over five years to reduce deforestation in Brazil. Biden also pledged $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund, a United Nations-led program aimed to help developing countries become more resilient to climate change and transition to clean energy sources. The funding comes after the president in 2021 pledged to work with Congress to quadruple U.S. climate support for developing countries to $11.4 billion each year by 2024. The president's request for additional climate funding will likely face strong opposition from the Republican-controlled House.

PREVIEWThe ICVCM’s effort comes during a time when many companies are hesitant to buy voluntary carbon credits or have pulled back. Less than a quarter of 137 global companies surveyed in the fourth quarter of 2022 plan to use carbon credits, according to the World Economic Forum.

Google is working on an AI model to translate hard-to-read handwriting, like on doctors' notes. The company announced it's working with pharmacists on the AI model that will be in Google Lens. Doctors' handwriting can potentially lead to deadly consequences for patients, Time reported, citing a 2006 study from the National Academies of Science's Institute of Medicine. However, a 1996 study published in the National Library of Medicine found that doctors' handwriting is no worse than that of people who aren't doctors. "This study fails to support the conventional wisdom that doctors' handwriting is worse than others'," the study's authors concluded.
Much is written about the professional opportunities remote employees miss by not working in person. On an intellectual level, I realize it's silly to experience pangs of FOMO for work get-togethers that I can't possibly go to. But on a middle-school level, I can't help but feel a stab of sadness about not being included in office social life, especially during this most social time of year. But now that more employees are back to in-person work, there are good times to be had — and remote employees are taking notice. Remote work works for my life, my family, and my job, and despite the drawbacks, I'd rather be WFH than any other setup.
European governments still can't agree on a price cap for Russian oil even as the December 5 deadline is less than a week away. Poland, for example, is committed to a $30 price cap. Even with a price cap of, say, $65, it's unclear whether that can really make an impact, given that Russia's flagship crude oil — Urals grade crude — is trading 20% below that level already. Despite the West's repeated condemnation of Russia and President Vladimir Putin, Russia remains Europe's largest single refined oil products supplier. Kabra laid out his strategy for investing in stocks, bonds, and credit. People have argued for years that a traditional 60% stock and 40% bond portfolio no longer makes any sense. A multi-decade bull market in bonds translated to high prices and low yields, while stock market returns were outstanding. If the purpose of the traditional portfolio was for bonds to provide stability and keep investors' money safe during tough times, it didn't work. Kabra explained that he's cut his stock allocations to barely half of what the 60-40 formula recommends.

By the first week of November, New Delhi’s air quality index was 472, high enough to affect healthy people while having a serious impact on those with existing conditions. In some areas of the city, the reading exceeded 800, according to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, a regulatory body. Experts say exposure to low air quality levels increases the risk of respiratory infections, heart disease and lung cancer. In response to the poor air quality, Delhi officials ordered the closure of primary schools and reduced outdoor activities for older students from Nov. 4 to 9. Their agreement to talk again about climate thawed relations frozen earlier this year after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi angered China by visiting Taiwan. Teresa Ribera, Spain's climate minister, said she was hopeful that the rapprochement would energise negotiations. “This unequivocal signal from the two largest economies to work together to address the climate crisis is more than welcome; it’s essential," Bapna said. Heading into the last week of the two-week conference progress has been slow, frustrating negotiators who are struggling to find consensus on how rich countries should help developing nations meet the cost of climate-fuelled disasters. The outcome on that issue, referred to in climate talks as "loss and damage", could define the perceived success or failure of the COP27 talks.
RIAs are solving the problem of limited tech integration by creating their own overlay tools. An abundance of wealth management-focused fintechs to choose from combined with a lack of integration between systems has led some advisory firms scrambling to piece them all together. In turn, the company decided to make that a value proposition by taking customers' data and entering it into a database for them. Once those customers created a Redshift data warehouse, they then could connect with Orion's warehouse and pull their data from there. Orion met with AWS' strategic-partnerships team and walked them through their use cases of applying Redshift technology.
