Mr. Smith is not the first special counsel to investigate Mr. Trump. Mr. Smith, by contrast, faces no such limits given that Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Mr. Mueller said little when faced with a barrage of falsehoods pushed publicly by Mr. Trump and his allies about him and his investigative team. During Mr. Trump’s arraignment in Miami in June, Mr. Smith sat in the gallery, closely watching the proceedings. Some in the courtroom suggested he stared at Mr. Trump for much of the hearing, sizing him up.

Last October, he added "perfume salesman" to his list when he began selling a scent called "Burnt Hair" to the world. Women’s World Cup 2023: Live scores, fixtures, results, tables and top scorersCNN —England’s 1-0 win over Denmark at the Women’s World Cup on Friday was overshadowed by a serious-looking injury sustained by its star midfielder Keira Walsh who had to be stretchered off in the first half. Williamson, Mead and Walsh played major roles in England’s Euro 2022 title win. James and her teammates celebrates England's goal against Denmark. Knowing a win would secure its spot in the knockout phase of the tournament, Denmark ramped up the pressure on England’s goal, but was unable to find a way past Mary Earps. It was showtime at the youth swine exhibition, and the pig barn was bustling. The competitors, ages 3 to 21, were practicing their walks for the show ring and brushing pig bristles into place. As he slipped into one pen, a pig tried to nose its way out, then started nibbling his shoelaces. Bowman prefers not to enter the pens, he said, as he wiped gauze across the animal’s nose. He soon spotted a more appealing subject: a pig sticking its nose out from between the bars of its enclosure.

Harvard Yard, on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The ruling is considered a massive blow to decades-old efforts to boost enrollment of minorities at American universities through policies that took into account applicants' race. "Without considering race, there would be a reduction in the number of underrepresented students of color." "This idea, essentially striking down affirmative action, on its surface will result in less diverse classes," said Robert Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review. "The ruling does allow for students to express, through their essay or otherwise, things about themselves that could include race," Franek also noted.

Friday’s debut of “No Hard Feelings,” a sex work romcom that doesn’t want to admit to its own subgenre, is very much of our era. Noah Berlatsky Noah BerlatskyThe Jennifer Lawrence vehicle from Sony Pictures revolves around a sex worker who, like the film, doesn’t want to admit what she’s doing. In sex worker romcoms, you’re supposed to be scandalized at the sordidness — but in a fun way. Anti-sex and anti-porn advocates have put a lot of effort into (falsely) conflating sex work and sex trafficking. Every film, sex worker romcom or otherwise, doesn’t have to be enthusiastically political, or, for that matter, sexual.

The premise that motors “No Hard Feelings,” a new comedy directed by Gene Stupnitsky, is, if not outright indecent, at least a little crass. Via online advertisement, Laird and Allison, megawealthy Montauk residents, are seeking an attractive woman in her early 20s to deflower their socially awkward Princeton-bound son, Percy. Taking up the offer is Jennifer Lawrence’s Maddie, a lifelong Montauker who’s increasingly resentful of the rich folk taking over her town. She’s 32 and a little too old for the gig, but she’s a knockout — as mentioned, she’s played by Lawrence — and has a canny sales pitch. Assigned to “date date” the puppy-cute but initially highly recessive 19-year-old Percy, she goes after her prey with an aggressiveness that’s initially off-putting to the lad.

An eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and the 2020 US Open champion, DeChambeau’s move was a huge coup for LIV Golf. Yet many of the game’s biggest stars stayed put, with several becoming outspoken critics of LIV Golf. Homo naledi had brains one-third the size of humans but were capable of complex thought. The Homo naledi species is still new and mysteriousH. naledi is a pretty new addition to the family tree of hominins, which includes our direct ancestors and other extinct relatives who walked on two legs. Researchers analyze fossils of Homo naledi at the University of the Witwatersrand's Evolutionary Studies Institute in Johannesburg. But those species still had big brains — unlike H. naledi, whose burials would raise further questions about human evolution, Stringer said. For study author Agustin Fuentes, an anthropologist at Princeton University, the H. naledi evidence takes the focus off brain size.

I’m traveling in West Africa on my annual win-a-trip journey, a global reporting expedition on which I take a university student to highlight issues that deserve more attention. By Maddie BenderFREETOWN, Sierra Leone — When Abdul was a teenager and coming to terms with being gay, he was attacked by a group of men. He reported the incident to the police and was told that an arrest could be made — of him, for homosexuality. Sierra Leone is one of more than 30 African nations (over half the continent) that criminalize same-sex relations. While most of the gay people I spoke with there did not seem to fear being arrested, they said discrimination against them was widespread in housing, employment and family life.
LISBON, May 22 (Reuters) - Portuguese police will on Tuesday search a reservoir inland from where British three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007, authorities said, in the first formal development in the case in Portugal in several years. A fire brigade spokesperson said police were preparing to start searches on Tuesday at a dam in the southern region of Algarve about 50 km (31.07 miles) inland from a beach resort where Madeleine went missing from a rented apartment while on a family holiday. Police erected two tents beside the dam on Monday, Reuters TV footage showed. Brueckner, a convicted child abuser and drug dealer, is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve from where Madeleine went missing. German police said in June 2020 that Madeleine was assumed dead and that Brueckner was likely responsible for it.
CNN —Hollywood screenwriters might have rejected the script for being too unbelievable, but Michael Block would not be denied the storybook ending to his PGA Championship fairytale. The 46-year-old – head pro at a public golf club in California – drilled a hole-in-one to put the gloss on a remarkable performance at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York on Sunday. Or, based on what he charges for an hour-long session at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, 1,922 golf lessons. “If it makes any sense, the one thing in the world that makes me cry is golf,” an emotional Block told reporters. They kind of documented my big goal this week was to be the low club pro; right?
MAKENI, Sierra Leone — Brace yourself for a gross fact: Some 1.5 billion of the world’s people have worms living in their bodies, weakening them and occasionally disfiguring them. Yet eliminating the worms is one of the most tantalizing and inexpensive of health fixes. Think of it this way: For the cost of keeping a single American dog dewormed, we could free more than 100 children abroad from the burden of worms. My student winner is Maddie Bender, a recent graduate of Yale University — the trip was delayed by the pandemic — and I brought her to rural Sierra Leone because what’s happening in these villages underscores how cheap it can be to register progress: Children can be dewormed for about 50 cents each. At a typical two dewormings a year, that’s $1 annually, compared with almost $140 a year for the Heartgard deworming medicine that my dog gets.
Testing on new drug donanemab showed it is effective in treating Alzheimer’s, Eli Lilly said. Photo: Maddie McGarvey for The Wall Street JournalEli Lilly ’s announcement that its experimental drug slowed declines in Alzheimer’s patients’ ability to perform daily tasks means there could soon be two drugs available on the market for people with early stages of the debilitating disease. That is great news for patients after billions of dollars and years of studies failed to produce a single treatment that could slow the disease’s progression. It is good not only for Eli Lilly but also for Biogen , whose new drug Leqembi has an accelerated approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
