NEW YORK (AP) — A Brooklyn woman who pleaded guilty to fraud in connection with various pandemic-era relief schemes was sentenced Thursday to three years of probation and $650,000 in penalties. Prosecutors said Chanette Lewis, 32, carried out some of the schemes by leveraging her job at a call center, part of a New York program meant to provide health care workers with isolation rooms in hotels. They said she provided free hotel rooms to people she knew weren’t eligible health care workers or COVID-19 patients, including herself. I thank New York City Emergency Management for reporting this matter," New York Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber said in a statement. Lewis was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to forfeit $290,000 and pay another $360,000 in penalties.

So you want to go to the Super Bowl this weekend. Even for non-football fans, this year’s spectacle of professional sports and over-the-top entertainment — in Las Vegas, no less — could be hard to resist. Considering the cost of flights, lodging, assorted travel expenses and entry into Allegiant Stadium, Super Bowl LVIII may be the most expensive to attend. As of Tuesday, people were paying a median of $8,776 per ticket, according to data from the ticket marketplace Vivid Seats, thousands of dollars more than most recent Super Bowl matchups. Driving the demand are a number of factors, including the possibility of Taylor Swift attending, the stadium being one of the National Football League’s smallest in terms of capacity and Las Vegas hosting its first Super Bowl.

Part motel, part new-age clinic, the facility offers nightly rentals in rooms that come equipped with “BioHealers” –- canisters that the company claims exude “life force energy,” or biophotons. “There are some forces driving that: obviously the internet and social media, and distrust of traditional medicine, traditional science. Given the primary importance of health, it’s hardly surprising that unproven medical claims and products that seem too-good-to-be-true have a long history in America. “ Distrust of government and distrust of major institutions makes people vulnerable,” said Stephen Barrett, a psychiatrist and expert in unproven medical claims who launched the organization Quackwatch in the 1970s to highlight medical scams. CNN —The Justice Department concluded Friday that former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed state employees, supporting the findings of a previous state civil review of allegations against the former governor. The department reached an agreement with the New York State Executive Chamber resolving the claims of sexual harassment and retaliation against the Democratic former governor, according to a release from the Justice Department on Friday. “Governor Cuomo repeatedly subjected these female employees to unwelcome, non-consensual sexual contact; ogling; unwelcome sexual comments; gender-based nicknames; comments on their physical appearances; and/or preferential treatment based on their physical appearances,” the Justice Department found. In August 2021, the New York attorney general’s office found that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women and created a “hostile” work environment for women.

During coffee, I noticed him acting a little different, but I just chalked it up to the long road trip and the time. Walking over to check it out, I felt him do the same, and at one point, I felt tension as we looked out from the terrace.

The Ouray County Plaindealer is published on Thursdays and delivered to racks late Wednesday. The rack price for the weekly newspaper is $1, so someone spent $12 opening racks and removing all the newspapers, Wiggins said. They missed one newspaper rack at a coffee shop, so about 200 papers were stolen. He believed the person who returned the newspapers was the person who took them and that only one person was involved in the theft. Someone taped over the coin slot on the newspaper rack at the campground and covered the plexiglass window with a sign asking them to remove the rack, he said.

In cities from New York to Vienna, new short-term-rental restrictions — designed to improve housing availability for residents — are poised to boost the bottom lines at hotels. However, travelers working remotely continue to favor rentals, which remain strong in rural areas where there are more rentals than hotels. “Hotel supply is primarily in larger urban centers or along interstates,” he added. Though rentals are expected to account for just over 15 percent of lodging demand in 2024, compared to about 12 percent before the pandemic, they have profoundly challenged hotels. In response, hotels have adopted more residential features.

The court decided the case was moot after the plaintiff at the center of the dispute, Deborah Laufer, dropped her lawsuit. We are not convinced, however, that Laufer abandoned her case in an effort to evade our review,” Barrett wrote.
