2023's gold rush for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé music should continue to bode well for shares of Spotify Technology , according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Benjamin Swinburne named the music streaming company a top pick and reiterated his buy rating. Heightened engagement levels and ongoing innovation should fuel further market share gains and help the company hold onto pricing power, he added. In the near term, Swinburne remains confident in the company's ability to retain pricing power and anticipates an acceleration in revenue growth during the fourth quarter. The record-breaking event has sold out stadiums, led to an expensive resale ticket market and heads to theaters this weekend as a concert film that's already broken records, surpassing $100 million in ticket sales .

Bank of America predicts people will continue to spend big on live entertainment. AdvertisementAdvertisementMaybe the epic summer of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and "Barbenheimer" was just the beginning and not just a one-off outlier. On the surface, this contradicts some earlier warnings that while entertainment spending did prop up the economy, it would be fleeting. Bank of America did warn in its report that there is some risk in betting on "funflation" to continue. But if Bank of America's predictions are correct, the economy may feel the effects of entertainment spending despite the diminished sparkle of the performers.

Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Barbie, Oppenheimer Getty ImagesConsumer spending may not be out of the woods. Real spending is expected to come in 1.9% higher in the third quarter, helped in part by stadium tours from music superstars Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, as well as summer movie blockbusters "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," according to Morgan Stanley. Taken together, Morgan Stanley economist Sarah Wolfe said the "unprecedented" revenues tied to these events should add a seventh of one percentage point to consumption growth in the quarter. Simultaneously, Wolfe said the return of student loan payments this fall should pull consumption down another by another eighth of a percentage point. "In 4Q, these factors not only unwind, but the October expiration of the student loan moratorium further weighs on consumption."

Media and entertainment deal-making has slowed, but private equity players are still betting big on the space. Middle Eastern sources are still providing funding to media, which could fuel deals in the months ahead. Media deal volume has actually increased, just not as fast; PwC recorded media deals rose 3% (to 326) in the six months through May, down from a 7% increase in the previous six months. And beyond private equity, legacy players could shed properties they consider non-core: Paramount is trying to offload BET while Warner Bros. Ticketmaster is hiring a Director of Social, and the company is asking bravery of the new hire. Posted five days ago on LinkedIn, Ticketmaster is searching for a social media expert to take over its North America marketing leadership team. Months of messy ticket sales led by Ticketmaster have put the massive entertainment sales site under the microscope. The ticketing debacle even prompted a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled "That's the Ticket: Promoting Competition and Protecting Consumers in Live Entertainment," where a bipartisan group of senators grilled Joe Berchtold, the president and CFO of Live Nation Entertainment. "For too long, Live Nation and Ticketmaster have wielded monopoly power anticompetitively, harming fans and artists alike."
