CNN —Robert Pattinson’s Batman has not yet used the Batboat in his adventures, but the British actor said that he previously made use of another multifunctional boat – an inflatable one that he used for sleeping, sitting and eating on. “There was a time when the only piece of furniture I had for about six months was an inflatable boat that would double as my couch, bed, and dining table,” he told Architectural Digest in an interview published Wednesday. Featuring two rounded arms that jut out like giant earlobes, the sofa is covered in a white linen velvet with a base of pink onyx that matches drink trays in the arms. The design originated from Pattinson’s sketches of furniture he thought “would make people interact in a playful and informal way,” he told Architectural Digest. “They all had disproportionate, oversized elements that were quite fun,” he said.

Photo: GRANGERIn the annals of irresponsible utopianism, few names stand out like that of Bronson Alcott. Bronson’s propensity to run up debts and alienate supporters sank his young family into poverty. Had it not been for the busy and lucrative pen of their second daughter, Louisa May, the Alcott family might have disappeared into the footnotes of history. As it is, they remain a subject of fascination, for Louisa (1832-88) would produce not only the novels “Little Women” (1868) and “Little Men” (1871) but also short stories and brilliant nonfiction sketches. CNN —After 26 years in business, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is closing due to costs becoming too expensive – for both customers and the restaurant operators. Deanes EIPIC, the flagship fine dining restaurant of an empire started by Northern Irish chef Michael Deane in the 1990s, won its first Michelin star within a year of opening as Deanes in 1997. ‘The cost has spiralled out of control’“EIPIC as a whole wasn’t a restaurant that was dying,” he says, but “people have an expectation when walking through the doors. EIPIC follows the classic fine-dining model upon which many a Michelin star has been earned throughout Europe and beyond. Says Greene, “people are willing to travel from the city or anywhere for good food and good accommodation.

Mummified remains of baboons in Egypt found over a century ago have long puzzled researchers. Kopp's discovery is the first time ancient DNA from a mummified non-human primate has successfully been analyzed to this extent. The exact location of Punt, Kopp told Insider, has long puzzled researchers due to references to the town being found in significant texts and artwork but not found on existing maps. 17 Best Dress Shoes for Men, According to Style Experts

The laces and classic body shape are characteristic of traditional men’s dress shoes, while the rugged rubber soles still make a statement with any formal outfit. “Good leather shoes are not an arena in which it pays to cut costs,” he says, recommending investing in “the pair of a decade” from this made-in-England favorite. (Crockett & Jones has regal and Hollywood credentials: the brand received a Royal Warrant of Appointment in 2017, and this is the style of dress shoes worn by Daniel Craig’s James Bond). Sleek sneakersThe key to dressed-up sneakers is finding a leather pair free of busy accents or logos. The style is “acceptable to wear with dress clothes,” confirms Los Angeles-based personal stylist Rayne Parvis, who advises people to wear these sneakers in place of brown lace-up dress shoes.

On the other hand, he said, “If the room doesn’t feel layered or there’s nothing particularly inspiring about it, adding a new pair of drapes with a particular color or print could dramatically change the space.”When you’re reviewing swatches, study the color, pattern and texture, but also think about the weight of the fabric. “Drapes are almost like a gown,” Mr. Arnold said. Finally, consider the light-blocking qualities of your favorite fabrics. Mr. Arnold almost always lines his drapery with a second fabric, which can be sheer enough to simply filter the light or dense enough to provide full blackout. Sometimes, he adds a pair of sheers behind the main curtains for better light control.

“Quiet luxury, oh God,” Isabel Wilkinson Schor, the designer of Attersee, said with a small sigh. “I don’t consider us a part of that trend at all. It’s been around for a very long time, and it’s equated with minimalism. I don’t see what we are doing as minimalism.”Attersee, which Ms. Wilkinson Schor founded in 2021, is known for the kinds of high quality, strokeable fabrics associated with the trend. The impetus for the line was simply to find everyday clothes that were comfortable and beautiful, not the kind of thing that would be worn only to a big event once a year.

It was the tail end of another long, hot Tokyo summer, and salarymen across the city were looking at their wardrobes with dread. Every year from May to September, Japan’s famously conservative corporate workers and government employees set aside their stiff, dark suits for more casual attire. Out go the neckties and starched shirts; in come short-sleeved polos and linen shirts, even the occasional Hawaiian. Uncomfortable though they may be, Japanese offices offer a model for how countries around the world can reduce greenhouse gas emissions that have contributed to record-breaking heat waves and extreme weather events. This August was the hottest ever recorded in Japan, according to its meteorological agency, and daily highs in Tokyo remained above 32 degrees Celsius, or 90 degrees Fahrenheit, into the latter part of September.

Listening to his moans and wails, I realized that, excruciating as my previous night had been, I’d gotten off comparatively easy. Ava, in the waiting room, saw the man’s adult daughter helplessly listening to her father’s agonies, her head in her hands, her face gray. And it’s just around the time your senescent parents die, releasing you from your last grim filial duties, that you start noticing signs of your own incipient decline. The world is arranged to discreetly conceal this side of life from us — the messy, ragged back of the tapestry. Then I was released back into the “real” Paris — the public, lovely one.

CNN —A shoe belonging to a child and dating back more than 2,000 years has been unearthed in Austria with its laces still intact. The condition of the shoe found is outstanding,” Professor Thomas Stoellner, head of the Research Department at the German Mining Museum, said in the press release. Excavation work at Dürrnberg is being done to obtain information on the work and lives of Iron age miners, according to the museum. Finding a child’s shoe is “always something special,” because it shows that children were present underground, the museum said. Finds like this child’s shoe, but also textile remains or excrement like those found on Dürrnberg, offer an extremely rare insight into the life of Iron Age miners.”

Many clothes contain synthetic fabrics that release plastic into the water when laundered. How you do your laundry may be increasing your plastic output, which can harm marine life. Some ways to avoid this include using cold water and washing your clothes less often. That's right, the simple act of washing synthetic fabrics, like polyester, acrylic, and nylon releases microplastics. AdvertisementAdvertisementLuckily, there are things you can do in the immediate to reduce how much microplastics you may be sending into the environment.

It’s widely agreed that the official poverty measure — the one that showed an uptick in poverty last year — is outdated and inaccurate. The supplemental poverty measure is better, but it has problems of its own. It’s sometimes described as a “quasi” relative measure, which makes me queasy. An absolute measure of poverty sets a threshold for what constitutes poverty and sticks with it year after year, adjusting only for inflation. A relative measure sets the poverty threshold in relation to how other people live — for instance, as a percentage of the median income — so poverty tends to get redefined upward over time.

Fiber Art Is Finally Being Taken Seriously

Made of more than 3,000 “ponytails” of linen thread, as the artist called them, stitched together and piled atop one another, it looked at first glance like something one might encounter in a commercial fabric store. Neither traditional sculpture nor painting, it conjured both, a monumental object made from the humblest materials. The show that featured Hicks’s work, “Wall Hangings,” was a rare American institutional endorsement of artists who make ambitious work out of fiber and broadened the idea of what art could be. But the exhibition received only one major review, in the niche publication Craft Horizons, by the sculptor Louise Bourgeois. If they must be classified, they would fall somewhere between fine and applied art.” They “rarely liberate themselves from decoration,” she concluded, deploying what might be art’s most insulting critical term.

“Irving made it possible for us to buy that work of art, pure and simple,” said Glenn D. Lowry, MoMA’s longtime director. Born Dec. 1, 1930, in New York, where his father owned furniture stores, Blum moved to Phoenix when he was 10. Blum met the collectors who came to visit galleries in the area. Blum came back with a painting by Josef Albers — a pioneer of color in abstract art — and he was on his way. Then in 1956 the gallerist David Herbert took Blum to meet Ellsworth Kelly.

The knee-deep channels, dating back 2,800 years, are located outside Jerusalem's walled Old City. "We looked at the installation and realised that we had stumbled on something unique," said archaeologist Yiftah Shalev in a joint statement, dubbing the discovery a "mystery". The channels may have been used to prepare a commodity "connected to the economy of the temple or palace", said archaeologist Yuval Gadot in the statement. "The production of linen, for example, requires soaking the flax for a long time to soften it. The find, part of Israel's City of David National Park, will go on public display next week, the statement said.
