TOKYO (AP) — As Japan's space agency prepares for its first moon landing early Saturday, it's aiming to hit a very small target. The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, a lightweight spacecraft about the size of a passenger vehicle, is using “pinpoint landing” technology that promises far greater control than any previous moon landing. The mission's main goal is to test new landing technology that would allow moon mission to land “where we want to, rather than where it is easy to land,” JAXA has said. After landing, the spacecraft will seek clues about the origin of the Moon, including analyzing minerals with a special camera. Taipei, Taiwan CNN —Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party pulled off a historic third consecutive presidential victory on Saturday as voters shrugged off warnings by China that their re-election would increase the risk of conflict. The counting of votes has concluded, with Lai – the candidate of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) – receiving just over 40% of the total votes, according to Taiwan’s Central Election Commission (CEC). Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party candidate Hou Yu-ih garnered 33.49% of the votes, with Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je received 26.45%. Here’s what to know about SLIM’s lunar landing: SLIM is currently in lunar orbit and will begin its descent around 10:40 a.m. Eastern time on Friday. The experimental SLIM spacecraft, nicknamed “moon sniper,” is about the size of a small food truck. The mission’s primary goal is to demonstrate a navigation system that could help future spacecraft land on the moon or other worlds with more precision. After landing it will eject two small rovers, LEV-1 and LEV-2, which will briefly explore around the lander.

CNN —The Israeli national soccer team on Sunday played its first match since the Israel-Hamas war started, losing 1-0 against Kosovo in a European Championship qualifying match. During Israel’s national anthem before the match, some fans in attendance in Kosovo appeared to boo and whistle, according to videos circulating on social media. CNN has contacted UEFA, the governing body of European football, and the Israeli Football Association for comment. The top two teams, currently Romania and Switzerland, will automatically qualify for next year’s European Championship in Germany. “Our country is more important than football,” Israel coach Alon Hazan told reporters after the match, according to Reuters.

CNN —University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the three remaining games of the 2023 regular season after the Big Ten Conference announced on Friday the Wolverines football program was found to have conducted “an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years,” thus violating the Big Ten sportsmanship policy. “I want to thank coach Harbaugh,” Moore told the Fox broadcast with tears streaming down his face. CNN —Bobby Knight, who was one of college basketball’s winningest coaches and who guided Indiana University to three national championships, has died at the age of 83, his family announced on Wednesday. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington (Indiana) surrounded by his family,” his family posted to his website. Known as “The General,” Knight won 11 Big Ten Conference titles and 662 games in 29 seasons at Indiana. Knight also coached the gold medal-winning US men’s basketball team during the 1984 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
