CNN —Abdul “Duke” Fakir, a founding member of the Motown group the Four Tops, has died, according to his family. Born in Detroit, Fakir developed a love of music as a teen while performing with his local church and school choirs, according to a 2012 interview with NPR. In 1954, they formed the first iteration of their band in Detroit called the Four Aims, according to a Motown Museum biography of the group. “[O]nce we started singing, our whole perspective of life changed,” Fakir said in a 2022 interview with The Detroit News. In 2022, Fakir released his memoir “I’ll Be There: My Life With the Four Tops.”Fakir is survived by his wife, Piper Fakir, his children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The stock market's steady rally is forcing even bullish market forecasters to play catch-up and raise their targets. Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research late Wednesday hiked his year-end target for the S & P 500 to 5,800 from 5,400. This week's report repeated Yardeni's forecast that the S & P 500 can reach 8,000 by the end of the decade. According to the CNBC Market Strategist Survey , the average year-end target from major banks is 5,464, with a median forecast of 5,600. The S & P 500 is higher by 18% year to date, and nearly 28% over the past 12 months.

Roth individual retirement account conversions are a popular way to reduce future levies on pretax 401(k) or IRA withdrawals — and you can smooth out the upfront tax hit with a "Roth conversion ladder," experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which offers future tax-free growth. The trade-off is regular income taxes incurred that year on the converted balance. By comparison, a Roth conversion ladder is a series of conversions over multiple years, meaning "you're paying taxes in smaller increments," said certified financial planner Preston Cherry, founder and president of Concurrent Financial Planning in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Of course, boosting your adjusted gross income any year can trigger other tax consequences, such as phaseouts for certain tax breaks.
