This week's spill of 14,000 barrels in Kansas is sure to raise alarms over future pipeline development, as U.S. regulators had already increased scrutiny of pipeline construction due to previous Keystone spills in 2017 and 2019. The pipeline suffered few incidents in its early years, but since 2017, the number of spills increased after TC Energy received a special permit from the U.S. "I think a lot of scrutiny is going to be placed on the special permit," said Jane Kleeb, founder of Bold Alliance, an advocacy group that fought Keystone XL. John Stoody, vice-president of government relations at the Liquid Energy Pipeline Association said special permits come with numerous different operating conditions. "If anything there are complaints from industry about how lengthy the special permit process is.
TC Energy has shut the Keystone pipeline which ships crude from Alberta to the US. It halted operations after 14,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into a creek in Kansas. The affected segment of the Keystone pipeline system "has been isolated" and remains shut, the company said. It has ordered TC Energy to keep the pipeline shut until it authorizes a restart. TC Energy did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
Dec 9 (Reuters) - Crews in Kansas continued clean-up efforts on Friday after TC Energy's (TRP.TO) Keystone pipeline leaked 14,000 barrels of oil into a creek, but the cause of the largest crude spill in the United States in nearly a decade remained unknown. This is the third spill of several thousand barrels of crude on the pipeline since it first opened in 2010. While TC Energy is yet to give details on when it will restart the pipeline, a previous Keystone spill had caused the pipeline to remain shut for about two weeks. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA) to TC on Thursday said the company shut the pipeline down seven minutes after receiving a leak detection alarm. The oil spill has not threatened the local water supply or forced local residents to evacuate, Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Randy Hubbard told Reuters.
The Keystone line is a key artery bringing more than 600,000 barrels of Canadian crude per day (bpd) to various parts of the United States. It was shut late Wednesday after leaking more than 14,000 barrels of oil into a creek in Kansas, making it the largest crude spill in the United States in nearly a decade. While TC Energy is yet to give details on when it will restart the pipeline, a previous Keystone spill had caused the pipeline to remain shut for about two weeks. The spill in Kansas took place downstream from a key junction in Steele City, Nebraska, where Keystone splits to run into Illinois. By contrast, Gulf Coast refiners can draw on more sources for crude, both from offshore Louisiana facilities and from countries like Colombia, Mexico and Ecuador.
Dec 9 (Reuters) - TC Energy (TRP.TO) said on Friday it is evaluating plans to return its Keystone pipeline to service after it leaked 14,000 barrels of oil into a Kansas creek, the largest crude spill in the United States in nearly a decade. TC Energy was expected to restart flows on the segment of the pipeline extending to Patoka, Illinois, Bloomberg News reported earlier, citing sources. This is the third spill of several thousand barrels of crude on the pipeline since it first opened in 2010. TC Energy remained on site with around 100 workers leading the clean-up and containment efforts, and the EPA was providing oversight and monitoring, Ashford said. The oil spill has not threatened the local water supply or forced local residents to evacuate, Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Randy Hubbard told Reuters.
The Keystone pipeline system was shut down Wednesday night after its operator, TC Energy, said it had detected an oil spill in northern Kansas. An estimated 14,000 barrels of oil spilled into a creek in Washington County, Kan., south of the Nebraska border, TC Energy said in a statement on Thursday. Washington County has a population of about 5,500, according to government data. The Washington County Emergency Management Office said on Facebook on Thursday that residents in and around the county had reported waking up to the smell of gas. TC Energy said that the “affected segment” of the pipeline “has been isolated and we have contained downstream migration of the release.” The company said that crews were responding to the spill and were working to contain and recover the oil.

The path to reopening is unlikely to be smooth and straight-forward, with some finding it difficult to break out of habits formed during the strict lockdowns. Reuters GraphicsInvestors though are riding on the reopening optimism. Next week's slate of central bank meetings will show us which way the interest rates are headed. Meanwhile, Keystone pipeline in the United States was shut down after more than 14,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into a creek in Kansas. Yet oil remains pinned near one-year lows, as gloom about demand offsets the Ukraine war's strain on supply.

Wherever you think inflation is coming from, it's not China - not yet at least. China's producer prices fell 1.3% over the past year and consumer price inflation fell to just 1.6% in November - its slowest pace in eight months. With the critical U.S. consumer price inflation due on Tuesday, just before the Federal Reserve delivers its final interest rate rise of the year the following day, today's readout is expected to show annual U.S. producer price inflation dropping to 7.2% from 8.0% in October. New York CNN Business —US oil prices climbed as much as 5% Thursday morning after the Keystone Pipeline was shut down following a leak discovered near the border of Kansas and Nebraska. Canada’s TC Energy (TRP) said it launched an emergency shutdown of the Keystone Pipeline System at 9 p.m. US oil prices rose to $75.44 a barrel on the news, before easing. No timetable has been given for restarting the Keystone Pipeline, a 2,700-mile system that delivers mostly Canadian oil to major refineries across America. The leak happened on an existing Keystone pipeline that is separate from Keystone XL, a controversial pipeline project that was terminated last year after President Joe Biden revoked the pipeline’s permit on his first day in office.
Companies TC Energy Corp FollowBENGALURU/WINNIPEG, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Canada's TC Energy on Thursday said it shut its giant Keystone pipeline due to an oil spill into a Kansas creek, and it is unclear how long the line will be closed. The 622,000 barrel-per-day Keystone line is the primary artery shipping heavy Canadian crude from Alberta to refiners in the U.S. Midwest and the Gulf Coast. Keystone shut the line at about 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday (2 a.m. Thursday GMT) after alarms went off and system pressure dropped, the company said in a release. "The system remains shut down as our crews actively respond and work to contain and recover the oil," the release said. Two Keystone shippers said TC had not yet notified them how long the pipeline may be shut down.

Oil gives up earlier gains

Brent crude lost 50 cents, or 0.7%, to $76.67 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude shed 16 cents, or 0.2%, to $71.85. Oil prices rose after the company announced the closure, which occurred at about 8 p.m. CT Wednesday (0200 GMT Thursday), but market sentiment has since shifted. While U.S. crude inventories fell last week, gasoline and distillate inventories surged, adding to concern about easing demand. Both Brent and U.S. crude hit 2022 lows on Wednesday, unwinding all the gains made after Russia's invasion of Ukraine exacerbated the worst global energy supply crisis in decades and sent oil close to its all-time high of $147. The queues suggest that "available supply from the Black Sea is already affected by the punitive measure," said Tamas Varga of oil broker PVM.

Companies TC Energy Corp FollowNov 15 (Reuters) - Canada's TC Energy (TRP.TO) on Tuesday said the Keystone oil pipeline system will be required to curtail volumes due to a series of recent severe weather-related impacts to system facilities. TC Energy did not share any details on the duration of the curtailment, citing it as customer confidential information. Keystone ships Canadian crude from Alberta to the U.S. Midwest and on to the Gulf Coast, and is a key part of Canada's oil export network. The company in October said it would temporarily increase capacity on its Keystone pipeline for a couple of months from November for testing operations on the system.
