“That is a staggering leap forward in comparison to what the industry is used to.”A rendering of JetZero's blended wing design. American aircraft designer and industrialist Jack Northrop created a jet-powered flying wing design in 1947, which inspired the B-2 in the 1990s. NASAIn 2020, Airbus built a small blended wing demonstrator, about six feet in length, signaling interest in pursuing a full-size aircraft in the future. Similarly, JetZero wants to simultaneously develop three variants: a passenger plane, a cargo plane and a fuel tanker. “Extensive aerodynamic testing and optimization are essential to fully realize the drag reduction potential of this innovative aircraft design.

CNN —India’s top court on Friday stayed Rahul Gandhi’s defamation conviction, offering a crucial reprieve for the embattled former chair of the country’s main opposition party who was disqualified as a lawmaker following a trial he maintained was politically motivated. Gandhi’s Congress party decried the conviction, accusing Modi of using the courts as a way to expel him from parliament and silence his critics. Since then, the opposition leader has been in and out of courtrooms, fighting for a suspension of his sentence that would allow him to be reinstated as a lawmaker. July 20 (Reuters) - Reliable Robotics, a Silicon Valley startup aiming to automate conventional fixed-wing planes, has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to proceed with its plan to test and certify fully automated aircraft systems, the company said on Thursday. "We want to be on multiple aircraft frames (and) sell into multiple markets," including cargo and military applications, said Rose, a former executive with Tesla(TSLA.O) and SpaceX. NASA is also working with Reliable systems engineers on advanced air mobility research, and said test data will be used to evaluate flight path procedures for future aircraft. Reliable raised $100 million from investors in October 2021, and Rose said the company, while not actively fundraising, "will definitely require some additional capital". He said he expects to see Reliable's automated systems installed on passenger aircraft by the end of the decade, capping a decade's worth of testing and certification.

Kyiv hopes to one day field F-16 fighter jets, and it is expecting to receive Abrams tanks soon. F-16s aren't ideal for the fight now, a US general said, but Abrams tanks will make a difference. While there are still questions about Ukraine's F-16s, Abrams tanks are definitely going to be delivered and are expected to have a significant effect on the battlefield, Sims said Thursday. US M1A1 Abrams tanks needed for training the Armed Forces of Ukraine arrive by rail at Grafenwoehr, Germany, May 14, 2023. The Abrams tanks promised to Ukraine are part of more than $41.3 billion in security assistance that the US has provided Kyiv since Russia attacked in February 2022.

US Air Force F-22 stealth fighter jets were redeployed to the Middle East in mid-JuneTheir redeployment comes amid repeated cases of aggressive flying by Russian air force pilots. Grynkewich spoke shortly after the US Air Force redeployed F-22s to the Middle East. The US planned to compensate by deploying A-10 attack planes, which are designed to strike ground targets, to the Middle East. Boeing's newest military tanker is the KC-46A Pegasus, which can refuel other planes in midair. Boeing is one of the world's leading defense manufacturers providing advanced military aircraft for the US armed forces and allied nations. While Boeing's defense arm is military-focused, it has used its commercial planes as a blueprint for production. One of its biggest — yet controversial — jets is the KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tanker, which was derived from the Boeing 767 widebody airliner. The Pegasus is Boeing's newest air refueler, having started production in February 2011 and sending its first to the US Air Force in January 2019.

Lockheed and Airbus will tout their LMXT tanker at the Paris Airshow this week, bringing U.S. reporters onboard the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport on which the new plane is based. In 2011, Boeing won the first of a three-phase procurement to replace the Air Force's aging tanker fleet, securing a contract for 179 KC-46s. But Larry Gallogly, Lockheed’s director of LMXT business development, said Lockheed and Airbus "are most definitely still in this competition." Lockheed and Airbus sought a program of at least 120 aircraft, but “the business case can certainly close below that,” Gallogly said. Boeing Defense CEO Ted Colbert said the KC-46 "has proven to be highly capable" and is ready for the threats of the 2030s.

Boeing defense margins to remain flat in second quarter

June 18 (Reuters) - Margins at Boeing's (BA.N) defense unit will look similar in the second quarter to its first-quarter results, Boeing Defense CEO Ted Colbert said Sunday. Margins at its defense unit were negative in the first quarter as Boeing recorded a $245 million pre-tax charge on the KC-46 tanker program. Colbert declined to say whether Boeing would take another charge on the KC-46, which has logged more than $7 billion in losses. He added that there is a “ton of activity” to improve performance at Boeing's defense unit but that it will take time for improvements to be seen. Boeing remains focused on "starting every program the right way," including a contract structure that gives Boeing a "fair shake and healthy business," Colbert said.

Boeing shares rose 2.5% in early afternoon trade after the company reaffirmed its plans to generate $3 billion to $5 billion in free cash flow this year, as well as deliver 400 to 450 737 MAXs and 70 to 80 787 Dreamliners. Deliveries will increase to about 40 MAXs a month during the back half of the year, he said. Reuters reported earlier this month that Boeing's schedule called for suppliers to produce 38 737 MAXs a month from June. Reuters GraphicsBoeing's first-quarter cash burn slowed to $786 million from $3.57 billion a year earlier on higher jet deliveries. Reporting by Abhijith Ganapavaram in Bengaluru and Valerie Insinna in Washington; Editing by Anil D'SilvaOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
April 26 (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Wednesday that it planned to ramp up production of its 737 MAX jets to 38 per month by year-end, while backing its annual cash-flow goal, offering some relief to investors after a new manufacturing snafu threatened to derail deliveries. Reuters reported earlier this month that Boeing's schedule called for suppliers to ramp up to 38 737 MAXs a month in June. Overall, Boeing reaffirmed plans to generate $3 billion to $5 billion in free cash flow this year, as well as deliver 400 to 450 737 MAXs and 70 to 80 787 Dreamliners. Boeing reported an adjusted loss per share of $1.27, wider than analyst expectations of a loss of $1.07 per share, per Refinitiv data. Boeing executives are expected to detail the scope of the problem on an investor call later in the day.
Investors are clamoring for details on the extent of the problem, which Boeing said involves a “significant” portion of the 737 fleet where two brackets were improperly installed. But Wall Street has received little information from Boeing on its plan to fix the problem and the overall financial impact. “I'd like to have some numbers and some scale of the materiality of this, whether it affects deliveries, cash flow and all the rest,” Vertical Research Partners analyst Robert Stallard said. Calhoun said last week that Boeing will not revise current plans to increase MAX production this summer. However, the company has slowed 737 MAX deliveries, and the resulting delivery delay will remove approximately 9,000 seats from airlines’ summer schedules.
Brazil's Embraer to build NATO-approved aircraft in Portugal

Embraer, which holds 65% of OGMA's capital, makes several types of planes, including a light attack aircraft called "Super Tucano". Embraer also manufacturers the KC-390 military cargo aircraft and it aims for more international deals to sell it. In 2019, the Portuguese government said it would buy five of Embraer's KC-390 military transport aircraft and a flight simulator for 827 million euros. Two sources familiar with the matter said on last week that Austria was looking to advance in talks with Embraer on purchasing four or five KC-390 military cargo aircraft. "President (Lula) wants to encourage the Brazilian defence industry and increase investment in the defence industry," Mucio said.
