Influential Republicans vying to be Donald J. Trump’s vice-presidential running mate appeared at a conservative conference near Washington, auditioning for the spot at Mr. Trump’s side on the campaign trail with fire and flattery. Four people seen as contenders in the “Apprentice”-like spectacle made appearances on Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference, known as CPAC. Kristi Noem of South Dakota and Kari Lake, a Senate candidate in Arizona who rose to conservative prominence with a full-throated embrace of Mr. Trump’s stolen election lies. The conservative and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was scheduled to speak later in the evening. The contenders appeared to understand that they had an audience of one in Mr. Trump.

Senate Republicans’ campaign arm on Tuesday endorsed Kari Lake in Arizona, signaling the party’s embrace of a firebrand candidate in a state central to their efforts to regain a majority. The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s endorsement, first reported by Politico, reflects Ms. Lake’s efforts to make nice with a Republican establishment that she blasted in her 2022 campaign for governor, and that has long had concerns about her electability. “Kari Lake is one of the most talented candidates in the country,” the committee’s chairman, Senator Steve Daines of Montana, said in a statement. “Kari is building out an effective campaign operation that has what it takes to flip Arizona’s Senate seat in November.”Ms. Lake is seeking the Republican nomination in what could be a three-way race for the seat currently held by Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Representative Ruben Gallego is the front-runner on the Democratic side, and Ms. Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in 2022 to be an independent, has not confirmed whether she will run for re-election.

Biden’s reelection campaign has repeatedly declined to commit to joining debates with Trump, his likely opponent in the November general election. Trump, meanwhile, has feuded with the Republican National Committee and refused to join its primary debates. In 2020, he objected to the rules of the nonpartisan commission that has hosted general election debates since 1976. Lowering his voice to a whisper, Coons said: “That was bad.”He then questioned whether a general election debate this year would be worth it. “But this is ultimately a judgment call for President Biden."

He also joined with other top House Republicans Monday afternoon to implore Senate Republicans to kill it. McConnell is already facing one key defection: Sen. Steve Daines, who leads the Senate GOP's campaign arm, is lined up against the bipartisan deal. "This bill unites Senate Democrats and sharply divides Senate Republicans," Lee said in another post. Since then, a group of Senate Republicans has continued to be vocal about the difficulties of having a GOP leader who has an at best icy relationship with Trump. As of this writing, there's a chance a majority of Senate Republicans will stand against their leader.

Senator Kyrsten Sinema is behind schedule in making a decision about whether to seek re-election in Arizona. Ms. Sinema, who left the Democratic Party just over a year ago to become an independent, is still considering whether to run for a second term, aides said. But new campaign finance reports show that she is lagging well behind the plan she and her team discussed last spring. By the end of December, Ms. Sinema would have a campaign staff in place. But there is no sign that she carried out any significant polling, research or staff hires in the final six months of last year.

According to financial disclosure documents that Lake filed as part of her US Senate bid on Tuesday, the former TV anchor made at least $175,000 from paid speeches and book royalties. The other $75,000 came from speeches Lake gave to conservative groups in Texas, California, New York, and Idaho, sometimes netting $15,000 for one appearance. In a statement, a Lake spokesperson accused the media of having "Kari Lake derangement syndrome." CNN —The Donald Trump vice presidential reality selection show is heating up, with pundits laying out lists of possible people Trump might choose. They range from South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott, to Ohio Sen. JD Vance, to even former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Trump won’t select a running mate who will help expand his voting base, as he did in 2016 when he named then-Indiana Gov. PHOENIX (AP) — Gina Swoboda, an election activist endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has been chosen as the next chair of the Arizona Republican Party, a leadership post that puts her center stage in the battleground state for November's presidential election. Fox10 television in Phoenix reported that Swoboda garnered 67% of the votes at Saturday's state party meeting. Swoboda is a former employee of the Arizona Secretary of State’s office and was the election day director of operations for Trump in 2020. She has been working for the Arizona Senate as a senior adviser on elections. “Gina understands that the White House and Senate Majority —and frankly, the survival of our Republic — runs through State 48.”

Watch CNN’s coverage of Senate GOP leadership and Donald Trump on ‘Inside Politics Sunday with Manu Raju’ at 11 a.m. Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t spoken to Trump in more than three years and tries to avoid uttering his name in public. As Trump steamrolls to the nomination, there are ample questions in GOP circles about how – and whether – Trump can rebuild Senate alliances that were critical in his first term but are nonexistent now. But Mullin said that the next Senate GOP leader and Trump need to move past the bad blood if they take back the majority and the White House. Asked last week if he could work with Trump as president, Thune said: “We can work with everybody.”Pressed again if he could do so as GOP leader, Thune said: “Well, that’s a hypothetical.”And the elevator doors closed.

Arizona Republicans chose a new party chair on Saturday, a move that tightened the grip on the state party hierarchy by far-right supporters of former President Donald J. Trump and that came days after a scandal that forced the last chairman to resign. Ms. Swoboda, whom Mr. Trump endorsed on Friday, won an overwhelming majority of votes in an election of state party officials held at the party’s required annual meeting in Phoenix. The vote was delayed by a lengthy debate over a motion to ban the use of electronic tabulators — mistrusted by many election deniers in the party — to count the ballots. Kari Lake, a far-right candidate for U.S. Senate and close ally of Mr. Trump who had a central role in Mr. DeWit’s fall, took to the stage on Saturday to nominate Ms. Swoboda. But she was met with a din of boos and heckling from the crowd, an apparent rebuff to her involvement in the scandal.

The chairman of Arizona’s Republican Party resigned abruptly on Wednesday, a day after the publication of a 10-minute recording of a conversation between himself and Kari Lake, a former nominee for governor, in which he appeared to offer a bribe to persuade Ms. Lake to drop her 2024 Senate campaign. In the recording, which was published by The Daily Mail, Jeff DeWit, the chairman, tells Ms. Lake that there are “very powerful people that want to keep you out” of the race, and suggests he is passing on a message from them. He says he had been told to ask her: “Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll and give her — to keep her out?”Later in the conversation, which Mr. DeWit repeatedly urges Ms. Lake not to repeat to anyone, he starts to ask, “Is there a number at which — ” before Ms. Lake interrupts, saying “I can be bought?” He replies, “Not be bought,” but instead wait a few years before running. Ms. Lake brushed off the attempts, repeatedly telling Mr. DeWit that she was offended by the approach. “That’s immoral — I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror,” she says, according to the recording.

Read previewThe chairman of the Arizona Republican Party resigned on Wednesday, alleging the GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake all but forced him into doing so. Lake, apparently recording the in-person interaction herself, can be heard repeatedly rejecting the entreaties, saying she wouldn't even do it for $1 billion. Lake later told NBC News in Hampshire — where she was attending the election night party for former President Donald Trump — that DeWit should resign. "I received an ultimatum from Lake's team: resign today or face the release of a new, more damaging recording," said DeWit. AdvertisementIn a statement to Business Insider, a spokesman for the Lake campaign denied DeWit's account, saying that "no one from the Kari Lake campaign threatened or blackmailed DeWit."

With Donald Trump poised to capture the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, the former president is effectively holding auditions for a running mate – and a growing list of vice presidential hopefuls is starting to surface. Doug BurgumThe North Dakota governor, another Republican primary contender at one point, ran on small-town, business-savvy, conservative-values charm. He was on hand in New Hampshire on primary day, stumping for Trump and glad-handing with voters. “Not only do [Republicans] support President Trump, we support his policies,” Greene in an interview with MSNBC. Positioned directly behind Trump as he delivered his New Hampshire primary victory speech, Scott showed his allegiance to the former president while managing to sidestep a setup to bash Haley, telling Trump, "I just love you," Trump replied: "That's why you're a great politician."

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s huge win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday enshrines one of the most astonishing comebacks in American political history. His MAGA-hat wearing crowd greeted him with chants of “Trump, Trump, Trump” beneath two vast screens reading “Trump wins Iowa!”But the ex-president’s rebound is more stunning for another reason. Trump’s Iowa victory also sharpens the collision between the 2024 election and his legal imbroglio. His unhinged behavior, incessant shattering of rules and challenges to the law reinvigorated a brand perfectly tailored to Republican voters who despise “elites” in politics, government and the media. CNN —Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Tuesday that she’s committed to doing what’s necessary to stop former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House, as she continues to mull a third-party presidential run in 2024. Throughout her book, Cheney detailed how she saw her Republican colleagues fall in line to support his claims of election fraud following the 2020 election.
