Masayoshi Son, chairman and chief executive officer of SoftBank Group Corp., speaks during the company's annual general meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday, June 20, 2024. Son sketched out ambitions to help create AI thousands of times smarter than any human, making his most grandiose pronouncements since the Japanese conglomerate began taking steps to shore up its finances following a series of ill-timed startup bets. Artificial intelligence that is 10,000 times smarter than humans will be here in 10 years, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said on Friday, in a rare public appearance during which he questioned his own purpose in life. The CEO first talked about another term — artificial general intelligence, or AGI — which broadly refers to AI that is smarter than humans. Son said this tech is likely to be one to 10 times smarter than humans and will arrive in the next three-to-five years, earlier than he had anticipated.

Jack Taylor | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — European stocks are heading for a cautiously higher open Friday as investors monitor a slew of central bank decisions and data releases. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index is on course for a weekly gain of more than 1.5%, its best performance since early May. Attention this week turned to central bank action, as the Swiss National Bank announced it would cut interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 1.25%. The SNB became the first major central bank to cut rates during this cycle back in March. The Bank of England meanwhile kept interest rates unchanged at a 16-year high of 5.25%.

Read previewThe prosecutors in Donald Trump's criminal hush-money case say they're OK with the former president resuming his attacks on Michael Cohen, Stormy Daniels, and other witnesses in the case — but that they want the judge to maintain other parts of his gag order. A courtroom sketch of Michael Cohen while under questioning by prosecutor Susan Hoffinger at Donald Trump's Manhattan hush-money trial. REUTERS/Jane RosenbergAfter the jury verdict, Trump's lead defense attorney, Todd Blanche, asked for the gag order to be lifted, saying the First Amendment's protections should take precedence. The prosecutors in the case will continue to be engaged in Trump's appeal, so they should continue to be protected by the gag order, prosecutors wrote. AdvertisementJust because the gag order should no longer restrict Trump's attacks on witnesses doesn't mean they won't have other protections, prosecutors wrote.

While the expansion of legal sports betting has made gambling more accessible, it's also helped spot infractions like these. The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. There's little data available to show whether gambling violations like these occur more or less often in the age of legal gambling, in part because they weren't easily tracked before 2018. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in. As sports-betting continues to expand in more states and the industry evolves, there may be more gambling scandals to come.

The Federal Reserve may cut interest rates in July to prevent a recession. Markets are only pricing in a 10% chance of an interest rate cut in July, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. AdvertisementMarkets may think it's a long-shot, but the Federal Reserve could make its first interest rate cut in July as recessionary cracks start to form in the economy. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets are only pricing in a 10% chance of an interest rate cut at the July policy meeting, with most market participants expecting the first interest rate cut to happen in either September of November. And with recent data showing cracks forming in the housing and labor markets, that means a rate cut will happen sooner than most expect.

The MLB also said it was tipped off about Marcano's betting activity by a legal sports-betting operator, ESPN reported. "When you are operating in the dark, you have no idea what is actually happening — if refs are partaking in illegal betting or players are partaking in betting," Slane said. Many US states where sports betting is legal require gambling companies to work with a licensed independent integrity-monitoring service, like IC360 or Sportradar, to identify suspicious betting activity. They could be college football players betting on the NFL, or NFL players betting on games their teams weren't playing in.

An exterior view of the Supreme Court on June 20, 2024 in Washington, DC. In a closely watched case, the Supreme Court on Thursday denied a challenge to a federal tax on certain foreign investments — but left questions about whether a wealth tax is constitutional. The provision was enacted via the Republicans' 2017 tax overhaul to help pay for the legislation's other tax breaks. While the Supreme Court upheld the tax on the Moores, the justices steered clear of the broader debate on whether a wealth tax is constitutional. He emphasized the limited scope of the opinion and how it only addressed the "precise and narrow question" of the Moore's case.

Nathan Hare, a sociologist who helped lead a five-month strike by faculty and students at what is now San Francisco State University, resulting in an agreement in 1969 to create the country’s first program in Black studies, with him as its director, died at a hospital in San Francisco on June 10. His death was confirmed by the poet and playwright Marvin X, a close friend of Dr. Hare’s. He considered himself a Black nationalist, and in all three roles he clashed with both the establishment administrations and other factions on the political left, particularly Marxists. Dr. Hare was forced out of his job at Howard in 1967 after a public fight with its president, who wanted to accept more white students. The next year, he arrived at San Francisco State, which already had courses in “minority studies,” and immediately began pushing for an interdisciplinary program dedicated to studying the Black experience.

Spaces opened up, but when they switched to Di Maria on the right, or to Marcos Acuña on the left, Argentina rarely took that chance. It appeared as if midfielder Leandro Paredes and defender Cristian Romero knew that Di Maria wouldn’t outrun Alphonso Davies. Missed chances from Messi, Di Maria and Mac Allister kept the first 45 minutes even in Atlanta. Three minutes into the second half, Paredes sent a long diagonal ball to Di Maria, forcing Davies to backpedal. Yet with highlight-reel saves against Argentina, Crepeau stepped into the limelight and showed why Canada’s goal is now his and his alone.

Former Vice President Mike Pence at the US Capitol on May 16, 2024. This despite history suggesting that, at some point in their potential mandate, a possible President Trump might ask them to so something that tests their consciences, the law or the Constitution. The attractiveness of the vice presidential nomination may reflect Trump’s magnetism and the heady euphoria of being a key player in the “Make America Great Again” movement. He has also made clear to Trump that he wouldn’t have adopted Pence’s interpretation of the constitutional limits on vice presidential powers. Vance on Where He’d Take the Republican Party,” by Ross Douthat (column, June 16):In his interview with Mr. Douthat, Senator J.D. Vance mounts an absurd defense of Donald Trump’s attacks on our electoral system in the aftermath of the 2020 election. I think it would’ve been a much better thing for the country.”Why? Can the losing candidate now rewrite our electoral laws, in order to give himself a second shot? The irony is that Mr. Vance sees liberals as believing that “there’s no law, there’s just power.” Thereby demonstrating, once again, that Mr. Trump and his followers are very good at one thing only: projection.
