SYDNEY, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Australia's largest pension fund, AustralianSuper, has appointed senior executives to its London office as part of the rapidly growing fund's push to expand its presence overseas. The A$300 billion ($201.39 billion) fund on Tuesday appointed six executives to investment, risk and corporate affairs roles, including Carl Astorri to Head of Investments, Europe; and John Normand, formerly head of cross-asset strategy at J.P. Morgan, to Head of Investment Strategy. Deputy chief investment officer Damian Moloney, who is based in London, said the office was an "important investment engine" for AustralianSuper. AustralianSuper expects to grow to A$500 billion in member assets within five years and will deploy roughly 70% of its inflows to global markets. The chip industry's workforce is projected to grow to 460,000 by the end of the decade, up from roughly 345,000 this year. The law also created a 25% investment tax credit for building new chip factories, or fabs, that is worth $24 billion. Roughly half of the future chip industry jobs will be engineers. The shortage of skilled chip workers is part of a larger shortfall of science, technology, engineering and math graduates in the U.S., according to the report.

Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon said temperatures during this heat wave in the state have threatened records at both ends of the spectrum — including maximums and minimums — in its urban centers. Ebi said the high nighttime temperatures and the prolonged nature of the Texas heat wave are particularly concerning. "A very small percentage of death certificates during a heat wave put down, 'heat' as an underlying cause," Ebi, who studies heat deaths, adding that about half of excess deaths, on average, are from cardiovascular diseases.

The two coffee species that most of us drink — Arabica and robusta — are at grave risk in the era of climate change. Farmers in one of Africa’s biggest coffee exporting countries are growing a whole other coffee species that better withstands the heat, drought and disease supersized by global warming. This year, they’re trying to sell it to the world under its own true name: Liberica excelsa. “Even if there’s too much heat, it does fine,” said Golooba John, a coffee farmer near the town of Zirobwe in central Uganda. For the past several years, as his robusta trees have succumbed to pests and disease, he has replaced them with Liberica trees.

FRANKFURT, March 23 (Reuters) - Lloyd's of London (SOLYD.UL) swung to a pre-tax loss in 2022 and took writedowns on its fixed-income investments, it said on Thursday. The pre-tax loss was 800 million pounds ($982.56 million), compared with a profit of 2.3 billion pounds a year earlier. Rising interest rates have hit investments at many financial firms, and it posted a net investment loss of 3.1 billion pounds, compared with a 900 million pound profit in 2021. However, Lloyd's underwriting profit jumped 53% to 2.6 billion pounds. John Neal, CEO of Lloyd's, forecast 2023 premiums of 56 billion pounds, up from 46.7 billion in 2022, according to a statement.
