Nov 8 (Reuters) - Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar trimmed its 2023 delivery forecast on Wednesday to the lower end of its earlier guidance and halved its gross margin target, amid fears of a slowdown in EV demand and global economic uncertainty. Polestar, which operates in 27 markets globally, said it would now deliver about 60,000 vehicles this year, down from between 60,000 to 70,000. It had reiterated that forecast just last month after slashing the target in May from the 80,000 it had estimated earlier. The U.S.-listed company, founded by China's Geely and Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST), also said it would achieve a gross margin of 2% in 2023, down from its prior 4% forecast. The company said it sees gross margin in the high teens with a total annual volume of about 155,000 to 165,000 vehicles in 2025.

"Currently, the EU has a vibrant and growing integrated photonics industry, however, without volume manufacturing, testing and packaging capacity we are incredibly vulnerable to global events and the policies of competitor countries," Johan Veenstra, CEO of SMART Photonics, said at the summit. Currently most photonics chips, like most chips, are made in Asia, with important intellectual property in the U.S. The statement said low levels of European manufacturing and over-reliance on Asia in manufacturing and packaging, "threatens the EU's economic security and resilience". The statement was signed by Germany's XFAB and Aixtron, the Netherlands' SMART Photonics and Phix Photonics Assembly, VLC Photonics of Spain, France's Almae, and Switzerland's Ligentec, as well as PhotonDelta, a public-private partnership in the Netherlands devoted to funding photonics.

Reinhard and Zarate spotted a bundle of cloth, and lifting it, they found themselves looking into the Ice Maiden’s face. Studies have revealed that Juanita was a healthy girl between 13 and 15 when she died from a blow to the head. Nilsson used tissue depth markers based on the measurements of her skull to envision the proportions of her face, which included high cheekbones. Tissue depth markers and CT scans helped Oscar Nilsson reconstruct the Ice Maiden's face. For the researchers who have spent years studying Juanita, the arduous process to bring her back to life was worth it.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Half of the world's countries are suffering democratic decline, ranging from flawed elections to curtailed rights including freedoms of expression and assembly, an intergovernmental watchdog group said on Thursday. "In short, democracy is still in trouble, stagnant at best, and declining in many places," IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora said in the report. IDEA bases its Global State of Democracy Indices on more than 100 variables and is using four main categories - Representation, Rights, Rule of Law and Participation - to categorise performance. It also said Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia and Turkey had drifted away from the rest of Europe, performing well below the European average across most indicators of democracy. However, the think-tank said there were some green shoots, with surprisingly high rates of political participation and decreasing levels of corruption, especially in Africa.

The well-preserved remains of the girl, who was found in a sitting position, were naturally mummified in the freezing environment and had been entombed in ice. Mr. Reinhard said he had always imagined what the girl’s face looked like. “It was a shock when I saw, for the first time, Juanita’s face,” Dr. Reinhard said at the unveiling ceremony. He added: “I never thought I would see her face when she was alive. Now 28 years later, it has become a reality.”The girl is believed to have been 13 to 15 years old when she died.

REUTERS/Tom Little/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsSTOCKHOLM, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Swedish banking group Swedbank (SWEDa.ST) reported a bigger-than-expected third-quarter net profit on Thursday, and said the economy remained resilient despite turbulence and higher interest rates. Sweden's biggest mortgage lender posted a net profit of 9.13 billion crowns ($817 million), well above a forecast of 8.57 billion crowns in a LSEG poll of analysts. It had posted a profit of 5.59 billion crowns in the year-ago period. Swedbank, a rival to lenders such as Handelsbanken (SHBa.ST), Nordea (NDAFI.HE) and SEB (SEBa.ST), said interest income, which includes revenues from mortgages, rose to 12.9 billion crowns from 8.36 billion crowns a year ago, slightly beating expectations. Swedbank booked loan loss provisions of 347 million crowns, down from 602 million crowns in the year-ago quarter, and below analysts' expectations of losses of 583 million crowns.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had the moment that could have pushed the Phillies toward the World Series waiting for him. Harper, though, lined a 2-1 fastball to center to end the scoring threat, the inning — and Philadelphia's last, best chance to return to the World Series. The Diamondbacks used a walk-off Game 3 single and a tying two-run homer late in a Game 4 win that wiped out an 0-2 NLCS hole. Castellanos struck out — one of 11 in the NLCS — and, after a walk to Brandon Marsh, Thomson let the light-hitting Rojas take his cuts. The Phillies have not won a World Series since 2008.

But some time before then, the girl was sacrificed by a blow to the head, possibly in a ritual ceremony that sought divine relief from natural disasters, according to the scientists. It includes colorful attire, head covering and adornments, similarly based on the scans of the mummy. Consumer prices rose 0.4% in September, more than economists had expected, as rising costs for shelter drove the increase, the Labor Department reported on Thursday. On an annual basis, the consumer price index was unchanged for the month, at 3.7%. The core CPI, leaving out energy and food costs, rose 0.3%, while the yearly rate dropped to 4.1% from 4.3% previously. The CPI release follows Wednesday’s producer price index that rose more than expected, at 0.5% for the month, and 2.2% for the year. But, over the last 12 months, consumer inflation has fallen from an 8.2% pace – although it remains well above the 2% annual goal set by the Federal Reserve.

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Sweden has temporarily halted development aid to Palestinian territories following a surprise attack by Hamas militants on Israel over the weekend, Development Minister Johan Forssell told a news conference on Tuesday. European Union foreign ministers are meeting on Tuesday to work out divisions among its 27 members over whether to continue aid payments to Palestinians a day after the European Commission backtracked on an announcement suspending all such aid. "We have a new situation after the 7th of October," Forssell told reporters. "Our decision today is that Sweden will ... pause development aid to Palestine until further notice." The government said it had also given the development agency SIDA the task of reviewing aid to Palestinians and to report by the start of December.
