President Andrés Manuel López Obrador months later said he personally ordered Guzmán’s release to protect the population. While López Obrador took office in 2018 promising to trade a hard-on-crime security approach for one that tackles the root causes of violence, homicides are near record levels. Guzmán’s arrest Thursday could signal the government is willing and able to stand up to them.

MEXICO CITY, Dec 20 (Reuters) - The brother of Nemesio Oseguera, one of Mexico's most wanted drug runners, was arrested by Mexican authorities Tuesday morning in the state of Jalisco, representing a blow to the cartel, officials said. Oseguera was detained in the early morning and was taken to a detention center, according to Mexico's security ministry. Nemesio Oseguera is the head of the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) group and arguably the most-wanted kingpin in all of Mexico. The CJNG is accused of smuggling massive quantities of drugs, increasingly including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, into the United States. Nemesio Oseguera's wife was arrested last year for a slew of crimes related to the cartel.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 24 (Reuters) - At least three people died from destruction caused by intense rainfall unleashed by Storm Roslyn, which provoked flooding along Mexico's Pacific coast when it made landfall as a powerful hurricane on Sunday. Local civil protection officials confirmed that two women died as their homes collapsed in the town of Rosamorada in Nayarit. State authorities added that a 74-year-old man died some 25 miles (40 km) away in Santiago Ixcuintla, when a beam fell on his head. National power company CFE said on Monday it had restored power to 71% of around 180,000 users affected across Nayarit, Jalisco and Sinaloa states, along Mexico's hurricane-prone Pacific coast. The storm also sidestepped the major beach resort of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state, though it still generated strong winds and flooding in the area.

Officials in Mexico City, the capital, confirmed that a woman had died in a fall at her home in the Colonia Doctores neighborhood. The tremor closely follows a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico on Monday, the anniversary of two other major earthquakes. An earthquake on Sept. 19, 1985, caused thousands of deaths, while another quake on the same date in 2017 killed more than 350 people. The earthquake on Monday damaged many buildings in Mexico City, causing a blackout in parts of the capital and at least two deaths.

The Sinaloa and Jalisco organizations have taken over from Chinese sellers as a dominant source of the potent synthetic opioid, a leading cause of the U.S.’s record overdoses. Among the reasons, it is easier and less expensive to produce than heroin.
