But prices are shooting up in Jersey City as its neighbors refuse to build. AdvertisementAdvertisementNew Yorkers have been taking notice of Jersey City real estate for years, and its popularity as an alternative to the ever-less-affordable housing market in the city is growing. Between 2010 and 2018, Hudson County, which includes Jersey City, built housing at more than twice the rate that New York City did. New housing in Jersey City is overwhelmingly market rate rather than being explicitly built as affordable housing for lower- and middle-income residents. "The issues facing Jersey City tenants are multifaceted, but the primary concern is to guarantee housing stability."

[1/7] An abandoned vehicle sits in floodwaters during a heavy rain storm in the New York City suburb of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York, U.S., September 29, 2023. The extreme rainfall prompted New York Governor Kathy to declare a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. Systems producing intense rainfalls have become more commonplace in many parts of the United States, including the New York City area, in recent years. That storm soaked New York City and caused widespread power outages in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In New York, intermittent rain this week further saturated the ground, setting up conditions conducive to flash flooding.

The pay transparency movement is relatively new. Fifty-six percent are more likely to apply for a company — even if they don't recognize the company name — if the salary range is listed, Indeed found. For one, pay transparency may lower overall wages of the broader population of employees, even while raising them for the "inequitably underpaid," Obloj and Zenger said. New Yorkers fed up with a tough housing market are making the pilgrimage to Jersey City. New York City housing is becoming more elusive and expensive, and Jersey City is an attractive option. That's not to say that Jersey City is much cheaper, but there are more options: Along the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, dozens of luxury high-rises have sprouted up within the last 10 years, some filled with their own coffee shops, heated pools, and rooftop dog runs. REUTERS/Amr Alfiky Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Credit rating agency Moody's raised its 2023 U.S. economic growth forecast on Friday but cut its estimate next year for China, saying that while the risk of a recession had fallen in the United States, China's challenges were mounting. "We have raised our growth forecast for the United States' economy to 1.9% in 2023 from 1.1% in our May outlook, acknowledging the strong underlying economic momentum," Moody's said in a report. The firm, now the only big three agency to have a top notch triple A rating for the U.S. following Fitch's downgrade last month, kept its 2024 growth forecast at 1%, saying that high interest rates would act as a brake on the economy. Moody's kept its growth projection for this year at 5% but cut its 2024 forecast to 4.0% from 4.5% previously. "We believe that low consumer confidence is holding back household spending, and economic and policy uncertainty will continue to weigh on business decisions".

Wealthy Americans ages 26 to 35 are moving to Florida, Texas, and New Jersey. This was in contrast to the over 5,000 net young high earners who left New York, which still had the highest count of young high earners of any state. Despite losses of nearly 2,700 high earners, New Jersey netted over 1,000 wealthy, young professionals. Connecticut, which ranked sixth for net migration of young high earners, had a similar trend compared with all high earners. Washington, DC, exceeded Washington state at 16%, even though it lost nearly 700 young, wealthy professionals.

New York City's pace of housing construction has slowed to a trickle, despite a severe affordability crisis. Manhattan's borough president has identified about 200 sites where he says the city could build housing. We have to fix this," Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said in a tweet. The city approved 2,525 new units citywide and 1,208 in Manhattan in July 2013. A big portion of the opposition to the legislation came from suburban areas around New York City that didn't want to see more density in their communities.

Subway claims that nearly 10,000 people entered its competition to change their name to "Subway." The winner gets free sandwiches "for life" – which is actually $50,000 in gift cards. At current prices, if you plan to eat a grilled-chicken footlong a day, this wouldn't even last 11 years at some stores. “After hearing about this case for so many years, it’s a shock to find out that your neighbor is a serial killer and you never knew it,” a neighbor, Cheryl Lombardi, said. The killings terrorized residents for more than a decade as body after body was discovered in the remote area about 40 miles from Midtown. In all, remains of nine women, a man and a toddler were discovered in the area. She disappeared during an escort job in Oak Beach, a gated community three miles from Gilgo Beach. Ms. Gilbert’s remains were found in December 2011, but investigators have said they do not believe her death is linked to the serial killer.

The palatial Beaux-Arts library on Fifth Avenue guarded by a pair of stone lions was not where Farrah Denson wanted to be when she was a teenager growing up on the Upper West Side. She felt like she had to be on her best behavior and not touch anything. And she dreaded climbing all the steps to the main entrance. “I felt like I was going to a courthouse,” said Ms. Denson, now 34, who lives in Jersey City. “It wasn’t a place you’d want to hang out in.”Today, the New York Public Library’s celebrated research library — officially known as the Stephen A. Four of the five cities with the worst air quality in the world are in North America, including New York, a grim distinction fueled by devastating forest fires across Canada that have sent smoky air across the continent, according to data tracked by IQAir. New York City now has the second-worst air quality in the world with a recorded air quality index of 162, lagging only Jakarta. Anything above an AQI of 150 is considered "unhealthy" air. Just over 1 in 4 workers is now entitled to salary transparency by law — and proposals could double that number in the next few years. Pay transparency has become a cornerstone of the labor force in recent years, with Colorado becoming the first state to require employers post pay ranges on job ads in 2021. So far, eight states have salary transparency laws on the books: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Nevada, Rhode Island and Washington. Several cities and counties like Cincinnati and Jersey City, N.J., have their own pay transparency requirements. Proponents of salary transparency say it's a crucial piece to closing racial and gender wage gaps, which have barely budged in years.
