Smucker (SJM.N) is nearing an agreement to buy Twinkies-owner Hostess Brands (TWNK.O) in a deal that would likely be in the neighborhood of $4 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing sources. Hostess' shares have risen nearly 27% since Reuters reported that the company was exploring a sale after fielding takeover interest from major food makers. Hostess became an acquisition target after it raised prices on some of its products to boost revenue, fueling investor concerns over its prospects. Both Hostess and J.M.

THE POLE, by J.M. Coetzee’s novels are slim, and so, by and large, are his characters — they’re Modiglianis, not Boteros. The most wraithlike, a saintly hunger artist, is the protagonist of his novel “The Life and Times of Michael K,” which won the Booker Prize in 1983. When an ample person does show up in Coetzee’s work, moral stigma is often attached. Lurie takes her fleshiness as a sign she’s fled the strictures of civilized intellectual life.

Smucker , discussed his company's acquisition of Twinkie maker Hostess Brands on Monday with CNBC's Jim Cramer. Smucker said this move will help the company expand its snack offerings, noting how the two brands complement each other. Smucker highlighted his company's Uncrustable snack, a crust-less peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as a product that dovetails well with Hostess's shelf-stable sweet treats. Smucker said he's not worried consumers will lose their taste for sweet snacks, even as obesity drugs and emphasis on healthy eating permeate the U.S. zeitgeist. "Hostess has done such a nice job creating single-serve small portions that allow people to have snacking, sweet snacks, in moderation."

Smucker 's (SJM) decision to buy Twinkie maker Hostess Brands (TWNK) in a deal valued at $5.6 billion. "I like the deal, if only just because I like this channel for Smuckers," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street." Hostess Brands stock, meanwhile, surged nearly 19%, to more than $33 per share. Reuters reported in August that multiple major food brands such as General Mills (GIS) and Oreo owner Mondelez International (MDLZ) had shown interest in acquiring Hostess. Perhaps the "biggest worry" about acquiring Hostess Brands is the increasing popularity of weight-loss drugs known as GLP-1 agonists, and their potential impact on consumer food preferences, Cramer acknowledged.

Smucker 's plan to buy Twinkies -maker Hostess Brands is a risky move, if Morgan Stanley's latest research is correct. The firm revisited its August call that a new class of weight loss medications would hamper growth at some food and beverage companies . "Across our coverage, Numerator Insights data highlight that most center-store packaged food companies slightly over-index to consumers with obesity," Kaufman said. Hostess stock soared 19% on the news. Other food stocks with higher exposure to customers with obesity include Conagra , Kraft Heinz and Smucker, the report said, citing the Numerator data.

I don’t have a proper night stand and I don’t usually read before bedtime. However, my metaphorical night stand includes “Moby-Dick,” “Don Quixote,” three of Virginia Woolf’s lesser-known novels (“The Voyage Out,” “Night and Day” and “The Years”) and the complete work of Beatrix Potter. (Books written to be consumed at one sitting or in a day don’t interest me.) Rather, they read word by word, sentence by sentence, and they ponder over an unfamiliar word choice, a fleeting gesture, the shadow of an image, and the ripple of a sentence seen in the following sentence. It’s a testament to the art of reading with not only five senses but also with memory and imagination.

Brands like Chick-Fil-A and Geico are being accused of violating 1980s privacy law the VPPA. Broadcasters have long been wary of running afoul of a 1988 privacy law called the Video Privacy Protection Act that went into effect after the video rental history of then-Supreme Court nominee Judge Robert Bork was leaked to a newspaper. Since November last year, brands as diverse as Hallmark, Folgers, Mattel, Chick-Fil-A, General Mills, Mars, La-Z-Boy, Geico, and Fossil have faced lawsuits accusing them of VPPA violations. But these dismissals don't completely neutralize the threat of VPPA lawsuits. At least 70 VPPA class action lawsuits have been filed in the past year, according to Bloomberg Law.

Smucker has an RTO policy that requires workers to be on-site only during 22 "core" weeks. The Smucker model appears to be a hit with workers, who can live anywhere as long as they return for "core" weeks. Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy just told employees it was "past" time to commit to its return-to-office mandate of three days a week. Last week, Goldman Sachs told more of its workers to start coming into the office five days a week. As August is known to be, it's been a rough month-to-date for all three of those stock market benchmarks so far. This past week, the overall market was oversold, according to Jim Cramer's trusted S & P Oscillator. After Friday's strong finish, we'll see if the market's oversold condition abates as two major themes play out in the week ahead: Earnings from two Club names — Salesforce (CRM) and Broadcom (AVGO) — and key economic reports ahead of September's Fed meeting. Outside of the labor market and inflation, we'll also get a look at the housing market with the pending home sales on Wednesday. As we heard from fellow Club name Palo Alto Networks (PANW) last week, companies are growing more cautious and more closely scrutinizing large sales deals.

Regardless, the major averages are set to close a losing month as higher yields and Fitch downgrades weighed on equities this month. "Further cooling in the labor market and the services sector," said Brian Ellis, portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. The labor report will be preceded by the July personal consumption expenditures, or PCE, report on Thursday. In fact, many investors expect that the Federal Reserve is probably done hiking rates here as policymakers await the effects of higher rates on the real economy. Increasingly, investors are looking for opportunities in income as they deal with the possibility of higher rates for longer.

At Edinburgh Fringe, Small Shows With Big Ambitions

In a smart revival of Cyriel Buysse’s Flemish classic, “The Van Paemel Family” by the Antwerp troupe SKaGeN, the actor Valentijn Dhaenens sidesteps this difficulty by playing all the play’s roles. Mr. van Paemel is slavishly loyal to the landowner for whom they all work, and believes organized labor is a scourge. This eerie visual texture, neatly complemented by the doleful tones of an accordion, made for a memorably unique aesthetic. The standout Fringe show was Lara Foot’s stylish adaptation of “The Life and Times of Michael K.,” J.M. Coetzee’s Booker Prize-winning 1983 novel about the struggles of a poor man during a fictional civil war in South Africa.
