The woman Republicans once talked of as a candidate for president — after her dad’s eight years, of course — is both known and a cipher. They seemed to have in their possession way too many Trump Organization documents with her arabesque signature and too many of her emails in which nine-figure loans were being discussed. Before her stint in Washington with her father, Ms. Trump was pals with the children of the American aristocracy — even if their parents scorned him as a parvenu and a golf cheat. A granddaughter of a woman who worked as a maid in the Carnegie mansion and a great-granddaughter of the widowed German immigrant who gave the Trump Organization its start, Ms. Trump was the first Trump woman to the manner born. For that, even more than the beauty her father frequently and creepily extolled, she played a special role in the Trump Organization.

Ivanka Trump spent five hours on the witness stand on Wednesday, two days after her father testified in a fraud trial that threatens his business empire as he kicks off another run for the White House. Ms. Trump was the final Trump family member to testify at the trial, which stems from a lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James. The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, ruled even before the trial began five weeks ago that Mr. Trump and the other defendants were liable for fraud. Ms. James has asked that Mr. Trump pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in New York. Mr. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on the day he attends the Trump Organization civil fraud trial, in New York State Supreme Court in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., November 6, 2023. Engoron is unlikely to grant the request as he has already found that Trump and 10 of his businesses committed persistent fraud. However, Engoron's ruling covered only one of the seven fraud counts Trump faces. Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has testified along with his sons Donald Jr. and Eric Trump and daughter Ivanka Trump. The fraud trial is one of several legal battles Trump faces as he mounts a comeback bid for the White House.

"Not that I am aware of, no," Ivanka Trump answered quietly, when asked if she had any role in preparing the statements. REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 8 (Reuters) - Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump is set to testify on Wednesday in a civil fraud trial that has exposed the inner workings of the former U.S. president’s business empire and threatens to strip him of prized New York properties. Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled that the conduct amounts to fraud and is now considering what penalties to impose. Unlike her brothers, she did not oversee the Trump Organization during their father's 2017-2021 term in the White House. In a ruling that found Trump, his adult sons and 10 of his companies liable for fraud, Engoron described in scathing terms how the defendants made up valuations. Now it's Ivanka Trump's turn to face questioning in the civil fraud trial that is publicly probing into the family business. James alleges that Donald Trump's asset values were fraudulently pumped up for years on financial statements that helped him get loans and insurance. James, a Democrat, is seeking over $300 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York. Like her brothers, who are still Trump Organization EVPs, she has professed minimal knowledge of their father's annual financial statements. As her father's inauguration neared, she announced in January 2017 that she was stepping away from her Trump Organization job.

After her father’s election loss in 2020, Ms. Trump sought to distance herself from his company — and his mounting legal problems, which now include four criminal indictments. Ms. Trump also hired her own lawyer, separate from the legal team representing her family in Ms. James’s case, a move that rankled some in the former president’s camp, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The last time Ms. Trump testified about her father — before a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — it was a major embarrassment for the former president. In the testimony, broadcast at a prime time congressional hearing, Ms. Trump acknowledged that her father had lost the 2020 election, prompting him to lash out at her for being “checked out” in the final days of his administration. Though their relationship was strained for a time, the two have had something of a rapprochement and speak regularly, the person with knowledge said.

Trump Can’t Resist Turning Testimony Into Tirade

Trump, at times seemingly unable to stop himself from melting into a temper tantrum, claimed repeatedly, “It's election interference.”“We have a very hostile judge,” he said at one point. I wanted a jury.”To be clear, this particular type of case proceeding – determining damages in a civil fraud case – doesn’t use juries. That narrative is a markedly different one than Trump’s two adult sons provided in testimony last week. But Engoron already dismissed that defense in finding Trump liable for fraud. The defense team is expected to call many of the witnesses who have already testified, including Trump himself and his two adult sons.

Trump shrugged "yes" through a crippling series of questions about bank docs he personally signed. But behind his many tantrums and tangents (mentions of George Washington and windmills among them), Trump suffered, legally speaking, on that witness stand. The bank loan documents all bore his signature, Trump confirmed, not that this could be disputed, given the characteristic Sharpie zigzags on the signatory pages. Yes, Trump answered again and again. Of course, Trump being Trump, there were tangents and tantrums mixed in.

Trump Testified at His New York Civil Fraud Trial
  + stars: | 2023-11-06 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
During four hours of testimony in a Manhattan courtroom today, Donald Trump repeatedly attacked the judge overseeing the trial and defended himself against accusations of fraudulently misvaluing his properties. On the witness stand, the former president acknowledged helping assemble documents stating the value of his properties, which a judge had already decided were filled with fraud and which are central to the New York attorney general’s lawsuit against him. But he denied being involved in undervaluations and insisted that the financial statements were ultimately of little importance. The judge in the case, Justice Arthur Engoron, became frustrated as he repeatedly sought to rein in Trump, whose asides included proclaiming the proceeding was “a very unfair trial” and calling the New York attorney general “a political hack.” At one point, Trump complained that the judge had “called me a fraud and he didn’t know anything about me.”What’s next: Ivanka Trump will testify on Wednesday. What’s at stake: New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, who brought the case, has asked that Trump pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in the state.

Just 30 minutes after Trump was sworn in, Judge Arthur Engoron – frustrated by the former president’s non-answers – turned to the former president’s defense team for help. Trump is known for being long-winded and talking around an issue instead of answering questions directly. “This is not a political rally.”But Trump’s two lead attorneys, Chris Kise and Alina Habba, did little to help. “This is a very unfair trial,” Trump said from the witness stand. That narrative is a markedly different one than Trump’s two adult sons provided in testimony last week.

On the issue of intent, in last week’s testimony, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump both attempted to shift the blame onto their accountants. First, the judge has already rejected a key route Trump tried to avoid an admission that he intended to defraud the victims. He fined Trump’s lawyers for doing just that. Again, the attorney general wins whether Trump denies it, or whether he doubles down on what the judge has called Trump’s “fantasy world” financial claims. If the past is prologue, Trump likely will continue to deny liability: Blowing smoke is simply in the nature of a narcissist.
