Hong Kong CNN —Elon Musk is expected to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday as he continues to battle a firestorm over his public endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory on his social media platform, X. Even before the latest tumult, X had faced criticism for the prevalence of antisemitic discourse on its platform. In September, Musk threatened to sue the ADL for defamation, claiming that the group’s reports have hurt advertising sales on X. Jewish organizations in the United States are planning a demonstration for Tuesday on the National Mall in Washington, with tens of thousands expected to gather in a show of solidarity with Israel as it wages war in Gaza in response to the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. The rally, called the March for Israel, comes after large protests across the United States and in world capitals denouncing the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which has been plunged into a humanitarian crisis. The event is intended by organizers in part as a response to critics of Israel, where about 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack. Jewish groups that have at times clashed over the right approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have announced plans to attend the march. Mr. Fingerhut said the march was also intended to show unity in the face of reports of rising numbers of antisemitic incidents around the country in recent weeks, which he called “an attempt to intimidate the Jewish community and others who support Israel.”

Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey who is challenging Donald J. Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, said Mr. Trump’s rhetoric of intolerance — as evident today as it was during his presidency — had fueled the surge of bigotry confronting Jews and Muslims after Hamas’s brutal Oct. 7 attack on Israel and the fierce Israeli response in Gaza. And Mr. Trump’s lopsided adherence to the wishes of Israel’s right-wing government, while widely praised in Republican circles, secured only the “low-hanging fruit” of Middle Eastern diplomacy during his presidency, Mr. Christie said, denigrating one of Mr. Trump’s chief foreign policy accomplishments. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar got a prominent Democratic primary challenger Sunday when former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels announced he'll try once again to unseat her after coming close in 2022. But Omar — a Somali American and Muslim — has come under renewed fire for condemning the Israeli government’s handling of its war against Hamas. Jeremy Slevin, a spokesman for Omar, did not immediately return a phone message left Sunday seeking comment on Samuels' announcement. Omar has been critical of Hamas for attacking Israel and taking hostages — but even more so of Israel’s military response. That drew pushback from a strong supporter of Israel, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who issued a public show of support for Omar this summer.

Christie said people play on “confusion and misinformation” around events like this, and that he would go back to the US and share “exactly” what he saw in foreign policy speech scheduled for Wednesday. I write these lines from Jerusalem, after spending time with the families of some of the 240 people kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7. The hostages now held in Gaza include Jewish Israelis, Muslim Israelis and foreign citizens of different ethnicities. In all my years of public life, the meetings with these families were the most difficult and fraught I’ve ever held. Tragedy is part of Israeli life, and I knew it would be part of my time as president. Just like ISIS and Al Qaeda, the Hamas terrorists who attacked Israeli homes and families had no qualms about burning babies.
