Iowa is make or break for Mr. DeSantis, who has gone all in on the state. This makes it especially unsettling for his team that Ms. Haley has caught up with him there in recent polling. Mr. DeSantis has long benefited from the belief by many in the G.O.P. That said, Team DeSantis is determined not to get outworked — which is also something Iowans take very seriously. Playing to the coalition of Trump-skeptical Republicans and independents, she is walking a clearer, cleaner path than Mr. DeSantis.

DeSantis had courted Vander Plaats, president and CEO of the Christian advocacy group the Family Leader, in recent months. "If President Trump wins Iowa here, I think it's going to be awfully hard to make the case that you can beat President Trump. Recent polls have shown Trump with about a 30-percentage-point edge in Iowa over DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. As he has before, Vander Plaats in the interview denied any connection between the funds and his support.

But speaking in Fort Dodge, Mr. Trump projected confidence. Mr. Trump suggested that those funds alone should secure him a win in January. “My guys say: ‘Please, sir, don’t take it for granted that you’re going to win Iowa. It doesn’t sound good,’” Mr. Trump told the crowd. I got them $28 billion.

As the most powerful Chinese leader in generations, Xi Jinping rarely bothers to glad-hand or to try charming a crowd. His public appearances in China are carefully crafted, with fawning cadres and adoring fans positioned around him. So when Mr. Xi landed in San Francisco this week to meet with President Biden, to try to stabilize a relationship with the United States that has been spiraling downward, it provided a rare opportunity to see the Chinese leader up close and, at times, less filtered than usual. Earlier, the Chinese leader had compared presidential limousines with Mr. Biden as they met on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. And he thanked Mr. Biden for reminding him that his wife, Peng Liyuan, a famous Chinese soprano and folk singer, has a birthday on Monday, as does Mr. Biden.

While key issues like U.S. sanctions on chip exports remain unresolved, Chinese state media is now striking a different tone, focusing on Xi's smile during past trips to Iowa, fireside chats with its residents, and sharing chocolates with Biden. With official ties still strained, Chinese state media has focused on relations between the people and emphasised the potential for cooperation and importance of the summit for the Asia-Pacific region. Gary Dvorchak, an Iowan considered by Xi an old friend of China, said Xi's fondness for Iowa was genuine but that the Chinese leader also used his ties to the state for propaganda value. “It humanises him and it gives him an ability to show a connection to the American people and bypass the American media,” said Dvorchak. On the Weibo Chinese microblogging site, the most popular hashtag on Thursday still harked back to tension over Taiwan: "China must be and will be reunified."

[1/5] Volunteers gather at the Donald Trump 2024 campaign headquarters in Iowa ahead of a door-knocking event in Urbandale, Iowa, U.S., October 14, 2023. Reuters interviews with nearly 40 party leaders, Trump staff and campaign volunteers in Iowa show how the former president has learned from his past mistakes. In 2016, Trump, thinking he had little chance of winning Iowa, kept his operation in the state threadbare. "I don't think people realize in 2016 how shoestring that was," said Jeff Kaufmann, chairman of the Iowa Republican Party, referring to the Trump campaign. In 2016 Trump didn't have the staffing or digital infrastructure to follow up on such leads, meaning many Trump supporters like Jones and her husband stayed home on caucus night.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump waves at the crowd after speaking during a 2024 presidential campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa, U.S. September 20, 2023. After spending roughly $1 million on anti-Trump ads in Iowa, the Republican Accountability PAC, for example, concluded in August their money wasn't making a difference. "We have stopped spending money in the primary. Continuing to spend on the primary is essentially a waste of money, said Reed Galen, co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, said "no amount of Never Trump money" could match the enthusiasm Trump is generating among grassroots voters.

Trump will wade into one of the state's largest sports crowds at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, where Iowa State University will host the University of Iowa. Trump remains far ahead of DeSantis and other rivals in Iowa and nationally. Trump has made a habit of visiting Iowa on the same day as DeSantis, whom Trump treats as his main threat. He was in neighboring South Dakota on Friday night appearing at a state party fundraiser with Gov. Clinton also attended party events with her lesser-known rivals to demonstrate her willingness to undergo the rigor that Iowans typically demand.

CNN —In an urgent appeal to wealthy Republicans who had assembled in Milwaukee ahead of the first GOP presidential primary debate, top brass for the super PAC backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told donors they needed an injection of $50 million over the next four months, according to leaked audio obtained by CNN. The tension spilled into the open just days before the Milwaukee event, when the super PAC released a memo with debate pointers for DeSantis. The pitch appeared structured to convince donors the super PAC had a plan for their dollars if they would open up their pocketbooks. Many Republican strategists and campaign veterans have questioned the arrangement between DeSantis’ campaign and the super PAC, pointing to the limitations of running a political operation from the outside.

No more than two dozen Iowans had come to C & C Machining in Centerville to hear the last Republican vice president as he pursues his party’s nomination for president. And the ones who showed weren’t so sure how many G.O.P. voters still believed in a gospel that his former running mate, Donald J. Trump, has spent eight years rendering largely obsolete. “The old conservative Republicanism, those are my ideals,” Art Kirchoff, 53, an insurance agency owner, said approvingly to explain why he would vote for Mr. Pence in the Iowa caucuses this January. He had come at the behest of the machine shop’s owner, Gaylon Cowan, a friend, and, Mr. Kirchoff conceded, he wasn’t sure how many of his kind are left in the party.

That’s the true mark of a real milestone on this campaign,” Ramaswamy joked. For many voters in Iowa, the debate was their introduction to the 38-year-old candidate. A survey of potential Republican primary voters who watched the debate conducted by The Washington Post, FiveThirtyEight and Ipsos showed 26% of voters thought Ramaswamy won the debate, second highest behind DeSantis. Still, the Ramaswamy campaign said it raised $600,000 in the day after the debate, the largest single-day total since its launch. The Ramaswamy campaign plans to continue visiting Iowa and answering voter questions like Christensen’s around the state, Chapman told CNN.

Prosecutors have put a political whirlpool in motion. Presidential candidates converged again this month on the Iowa State Fair to flip sizzling pork chops, nibble peculiar speared foods, and scout for undecided caucus-goers. Yet history suggests most Iowans, and even most Republicans, are more into the fair rides and butter sculptures than primary politics. In the November 2016 election, Iowa’s 2.4 million adults cast 1.6 million votes, 801,000 for Donald Trump. How many Iowans were counted in that year’s GOP caucus?

Donald Trump holds a commanding lead in a new poll of likely Iowa caucus-goers. A new Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll found that Trump is viewed favorably by 65% of likely GOP caucus-goers and unfavorably by 33%. A whopping 81% of likely caucus-goers view her favorably, including 50% who view her very favorably. A majority (52%) of likely caucus-goers said they could still be persuaded to support another candidate. The Iowa Poll was conducted Aug. 13-17, 2023 by telephone.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump seized the spotlight at the Iowa State Fair this weekend, swooping overhead in his private plane just as his chief Republican rival, Florida Gov. The 2024 Republican presidential race played out in close quarters as Trump and DeSantis joined the crowd of thousands. Trump had traveled to Iowa with an entourage largely designed to troll DeSantis. “Iowa pork is delicious & provides nearly 1 in 10 working Iowans a job, but Ron DeSantis would be an utter catastrophe for Iowa,” the flyer said. The former president made his way to the famous “pork chop on a stick” stand while onlookers chanted “USA.”Unlike DeSantis, Trump did not grill pork chops himself.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Iowa Democrats find themselves at a crossroads. Iowa Democrats have watched Republicans dominate in a slate of competitive contests in recent years. Former Iowa state Sen. Rita Hart, who lost a close congressional race in 2020, now leads the state's Democratic Party. Celsi pointed to the Democratic minority's inability to curtail the conservative agenda of the GOP legislature and the diminished importance of Iowa in the Democratic presidential nominating process. Hart is now the chair of the Iowa Democratic Party.

NBC News will partner with the Des Moines Register and Mediacom for "The Iowa Poll" in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential caucuses in the state. The partners will work with Selzer & Company pollster J. Nine Florida lawmakers will join Trump at the Iowa State Fair. This is just the latest way Trump has found to needle the Florida governor. The Iowa State Fair is a major event for presidential hopefuls, who often flip pork chops and gawk at the butter cow alongside Iowans and throngs of journalists. Trump previously raised eyebrows at 2015 State Fair when he offered children free helicopter rides. A representatives for DeSantis' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The group, the Republican Accountability Project, is spending $1.5 million on ads in Iowa to try to persuade likely Trump voters that the former president would struggle to win the 2024 general election. The organization’s goal is to help lift another contender to the Republican nomination — anyone but Mr. Trump. The ads feature first-person testimonials from Iowans explaining that they like Mr. Trump but fear he could fail to win back the White House for Republicans by being unable to appeal to swing voters. In one spot, Fran, a two-time Trump supporter, says she “really appreciated” his presidency. But she adds that she will not support him again in the primary.

Trump's classified documents trial is now set for May 20, 2024. The former president now has the opportunity to sew up the GOP presidential nomination before it begins. On Friday, Judge Aileen Cannon set the classified documents trial date for May 20, 2024. It's now increasingly likely that Trump's legal woes bleed into the general election calendar, provided Trump wins the nomination. Arguably, it's the classified documents case that could sting the most.

DeSantis was absent from the event in his home state, and Trump used the opportunity to attack him. Trump said DeSantis' candidacy was divisive and poked at him over insurers dropping plans in Florida. "We are totally dominating DeSanctus right here in the state of Florida," Trump said, mispronouncing the governor's last name. They're dividing the party, although he's dropping so quickly he's probably not going to be in second place much longer." I said 'I thought you were a DeSantis follower,'" Trump remarked, before declaring that the GOP primary so far has not been competitive.

Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law Friday that bans most abortions in the state as early as six weeks into pregnancy. But it is already facing a legal challenge after a group of abortion providers in the state filed a suit to try and stop the law. Protestors fill the Iowa State Capitol rotunda, as the Iowa Legislature convenes for special session to pass 6-week 'fetal heartbeat' abortion ban Tuesday, July 11, 2023. National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison called the ban the “latest show of abortion extremism from MAGA Republicans.”“Governor Kim Reynolds just signed a cruel abortion ban into law among a crowd of extremists who cheered as Iowan women’s abortion rights were stripped away,” Harrison said in a statement Friday. Meanwhile, anti-abortion groups, including National Right to Life and Iowa Right to Life, praised Reynolds and the law’s supporters in the state legislature for the abortion ban.

Iowa Republicans pass a new 6-week abortion ban
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( Adam Edelman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +7 min
Reynolds, in a statement issued moments after the bill was passed, said she would sign the bill on Friday. As it currently stands, abortion remains legal in Iowa until the 20th week of pregnancy. The bill passed by Republicans, who control the Legislature, would ban abortions at the sixth week of pregnancy — or when, in some cases, a fetal pulse can first be heard via ultrasound. Republicans have often struggled to talk to voters about abortion rights in the year since the Supreme Court's Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade. The latest bill is nearly identical to a six-week ban that remains permanently blocked following an Iowa Supreme Court ruling last month.

All those candidates, however, then proceeded to lose the New Hampshire primary and the party nomination. Only 26% of New Hampshire Republican primary voters identified the same way. Trump has also been weaker among demographic groups who make up a larger share of the New Hampshire Republican electorate. Although the 2016 Iowa entrance poll did not ask about income, the 2020 general election exit poll did. The selected day is also the date that a judge has set for a defamation trial against Mr. Trump filed by E. Jean Carroll. Ms. Carroll (who also has filed a separate defamation suit) won a civil case against Mr. Trump in May. The last time the state held its caucuses in January was in 2012, when they occurred just three days into the new year. Still, many Republican candidates, and voters nationwide, see the now-firmly-red state as crucial to gaining early momentum and national attention.
