Ruzwana Bashir Is Quietly Connecting the Tech World
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +18 min
Story by Melia RussellPhotography by Lelanie FosterRuzwana Bashir is ransacking her kitchen cabinet for just the right tea. Bashir wears an Erdem floral-printed bra top, Erdem skirt, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Old Jewelry earrings along with her own bracelet and ring. "Part of building a business was going out and sharing what you were doing with the world," Bashir says. For years Bashir's startup had been building muscle around these capabilities; now it had an eager audience. Eating at acclaimed restaurants is fine, but Bashir prefers the more-intimate affairs at tech executives' homes because, she says, "you can stay longer."

The bankruptcy of prison health provider Corizon has faced pressure from senators and a federal regulator in recent weeks. Other troubling questions surrounding the bankruptcy involve payments to insiders, "dishonest" testimony, and a secret data breach. The other company, Tehum, was saddled with most of Corizon's liabilities and, in February, filed for bankruptcy. Alphabet 's AI lab, DeepMind, cut employee costs by 39% last year, according to a recent filing with a U.K. government agency. For the 2022 financial year, staff costs and other related expenses were 594.5 million pounds (nearly $731 million), down from 969.4 million pounds (nearly $1.2 billion) in 2021 — translating to an almost 39% reduction in employee costs, per the filing. Following DeepMind's employee cost cuts in 2022, Alphabet executives discussed plans to allocate resources to key revenue drivers, such as AI, on its first-quarter earnings call of 2023. "Beginning in the second quarter of 2023, the costs associated with teams and activities transferred from Google Research will move from Google Services to Google DeepMind within Alphabet's unallocated corporate costs," Pichai said during a spring earnings call. DeepMind's 2022 profit was about 60.9 million pounds (nearly $74.9 million), down from 102.4 million pounds (nearly $126 million) in 2021 — a decrease of more than 40%.

Cathie Wood says a U.K.-founded company is "one of the best AI companies in the world." It now operates as Google DeepMind. This year, Alphabet said it's merging DeepMind with an internal Google Research team called Brain . It's a move designed to bring two groups focused on AI closer together as the battle for AI heats up. Google is racing to compete with Microsoft and other tech companies in AI, with Microsoft already making huge strides with its investment in OpenAI.

Germany plans to double AI funding in race with China, U.S.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) letters and robot hand are placed on computer motherboard in this illustration taken, June 23, 2023. The target, announced by research minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger on Wednesday, is modest compared with the $3.3 billion that the U.S. government spent on AI research in 2022 according to a Stanford University report. It is dwarfed by private AI spending in the U.S., which reached $47.4 billion in 2022, almost double Europe's total spend, and well ahead of China's $13.4 billion, the Stanford report found. Simpler regulations would promote private research spending, she added. Even though Germany has nothing to compare with the U.S.'s tech behemoths, its number of AI startups has doubled in 2023, but that still only puts Germany in ninth place globally, Stark-Watzinger acknowledged.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs released a note to clients late Monday, looking at what they called "The (AI) trade after the trade." Marvell Technology (MRVL), a former Club stock and current Bullpen stock, is also included. But, in addition to surveying the AI landscape, the Goldman note aims to answer the question: What is the trade after the trade? The common theme here is enhanced worker productivity; AI leading to revenue growth and lower labor costs, an obvious benefit to the bottom line. Palantir's boss Alex Karp opposes the idea of a pause in artificial intelligence research, in contrast to an open letter from the Future of Life Institute signed by some of the biggest names in the tech industry. The letter, which has garnered over 31,000 signatures including names like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, called for a pause on AI research on models larger than GPT-4, which powers tools such as ChatGPT. The letter also said that if "such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium." Speaking to BBC Radio in an interview broadcast Thursday, Karp said he is of the view that "many of the people asking for a pause, are asking for a pause because they have no product." To him, "studying this and allowing other people to win both on commercial areas and on the battlefield" is a really bad strategy.

The White House announced it would invest $140 million to create seven artificial intelligence research hubs and released new guidance on AI. The developments come ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris's meeting with executives from Google's parent company Alphabet , Anthropic, Microsoft and OpenAI Thursday. As AI becomes more ubiquitous, the White House Thursday promised it would release guidelines for use by government agencies. The White House has made addressing AI a priority. Last year the administration released a "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights" and later outlined the creation of a National AI Research Resource.

A map shows all the locations in Russia, along its border with Ukraine, and in Russian-held Ukraine, where the American Enterprise Institute found any kind of fortification built by Russia. Four maps show when the fortifications built by Russian along its border with Ukraine and in Russia-held Ukraine were first spotted on satellite imagery. In December 2022 and January 2023, fortifications appeared inside Russian regions and more parts of occupied Ukraine. Russian forces have dug many such trenches along what they see as key roads and junctions, and outside strategic cities, Africk said. A zoomed-in map shows fortifications around several towns such as Tokmak, Bilmak and Mykhailivka, along plain terrain and along major roads in Russian-held Ukraine.

And in the case of Polohy, Russia has constructed two distinct defensive lines, one to the north and one to the south. Musiyenko estimated that Ukraine would have a force of between 100,000-110,000 for an attack, including eight assault brigades with a total of 40,000 troops. Russia has not said how many troops it has in Ukraine, or within its borders ready to deploy. A leaked U.S. intelligence document dated Feb. 28 seen by Reuters said the West had committed 200 tanks to Ukraine. Army chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said in December he needed 300 to defeat Russia, along with other vehicles and artillery.

Alphabet to combine AI research units Google Brain, DeepMind

April 20 (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) is combining Google Brain and DeepMind, as it doubles down on artificial intelligence research in its race to compete with rival systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot. The new division will be led by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and its setting up will ensure "bold and responsible development of general AI", Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post on Thursday. Going forward, the Alphabet staff will work on "multimodal" AI, like OpenAI's latest model GPT-4, which can respond not only to text prompts but to image inputs as well to generate new content. Google has for decades dominated the search market, with a share of over 80%, but Wall Street fears that the Alphabet unit could fall behind Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) in the fast-moving AI race. Technology from OpenAI, funded by Microsoft, powers the rival software maker's updated Bing search engine.
