He started with an "index-first strategy," he told Insider, and invested up to 80% of his earnings into low-cost index funds in the early 2010s. While index funds are ultimately what catapulted him to financial independence in the first place, he wouldn't necessarily go that route if he had to start from scratch today. "I'm still very pro low-cost index funds for almost everyone," he said. Lower returns mean index funds won't grow as much, and investors potentially have to save and contribute more to hit their goals. "I think business ownership is really where it's going to be for the next 10 to 20 years."

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced Thursday that the company's Starlink satellite internet business "achieved breakeven cash flow." Two years ago, Musk emphasized that making Starlink "financially viable" required crossing "through a deep chasm of negative cash flow." Musk has discussed spinning off Starlink to take it public through an initial public offering once the business was "in a smooth sailing situation." Last year, Musk told employees that taking the business public wasn't likely until 2025 or later. "Being public is definitely an invitation to pain," Musk told SpaceX employees in 2022.

The stock market tumbled into correction territory this week, spurring fear among investors that more turmoil is ahead. But if you are a disciple of Warren Buffett, a 10% drawdown for the equity benchmark shouldn't matter. "I know what markets are going to do over a long period of time — They're gonna go up. Buffett believes that when there's emotional selling in the market, it offers an opportunity for him to hunt for bargains. "Anytime stocks go down as far as I'm concerned, I like it because I'm a net buyer of stocks," he said.

How Many Credit Cards Should I Have?
  + stars: | 2023-10-10 | by ( Gerri Detweiler | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +17 min
Use this guide to identify what kind of credit card user you are—and how many credit cards you should have. A secured credit card can be a smart option if you don’t have a very good credit score. Most small business credit cards require a good personal credit score and sufficient income from all sources, not just the business. However, many business credit cards don’t appear on consumer credit reports, which means they don’t impact your credit scores as long as you pay on time. Similar to choosing a personal credit card, pick your business credit cards based on your spending habits.

On Friday, the 10-year yield pulled back to 4.565% after surging to its highest level since 2007 earlier in the week. Other commentators have also suggested higher yields, especially as a supply and demand imbalance exists in the Treasury market.

The great remote work debateAs part of the war over remote work, employers and employees alike have debated whether or not a mandatory return-to-office policy actually works. With two kids at home, the flexibility of remote work — coupled with no commute — was a boon. The firms that are succeeding at remote work have saved money from giving up office leases and are making their employees feel happier along the way. "You're still in meetings, you're still engaged, but you're not under the thumb of somebody — not treated like a child." Have you quit over remote work, or are contemplating it?
