Niccol has a "great track record" and is an "outstanding" hire for Starbucks, Edward Jones restaurant analyst Brian Yarbrough told Business Insider. Alongside Curt Garner, the chain's chief information officer who joined in 2015, Niccol helped spearhead Chipotle's digital turnaround. In Niccol's first full year at Chipotle, in 2019, digital sales were up 90%. AdvertisementMost locations already had two make lines when Niccol joined Chipotle, but the strategy was unclear, BI previously reported. "Whether you're a light, medium, or heavy user, when you're in the rewards program, you come more frequently and you spend more," Niccol told investors in February.

The state of Assam, in northeastern India, has launched a mobile app that warns people of incoming herds of wild elephants in an effort to reduce violent encounters between humans and the land giants. Clashes between humans and elephants are not uncommon in India, and have continued to rise in recent years. Human-elephant conflicts in the state caused more than 200 elephant deaths and 400 human deaths from 2017 to 2022, the organization reported. "The application will act as an early warning system about presence of wild elephants in the proximity of human settlements so as to help villagers avoid negative interface with wild elephants," Aaranyak said in a Facebook post following the app's launch this month. Along with the launch of the app, Aaranyak also released a handbook with information on using solar-powered fences to keep elephants away from humans and property.

When 36-year-old Nelson Cheney was little, he began eating spicy peppers and sauces to impress his dad. Cheney, known by his social media handle “@craving_capsaicin” — a nod to the chemical compound that gives chili peppers their heat — got hooked on the adrenaline rush he feels when he eats extremely spicy foods. Both sour and spicy foods generate painful responses, though they activate different nerves in the body. “I’ve got so many people that went from not even eating hot stuff to having a tolerance and now eating spicy food daily. Children and teens tend to be most susceptible to social media challenges, which is why Trucco said parents should pay attention, too.

Starbucks announced Tuesday it's replacing CEO Laxman Narasimhan with Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol as the coffee chain tries to reverse a sales slump. Before joining Starbucks, Narasimhan was chief executive of Reckitt, which owns brands like Lysol and Mucinex. Narasimhan's surprise ouster also suggests that Starbucks' board isn't interested in a deal with activist investors. When news of Elliott's stake in Starbucks first broke in July, the hedge fund offered Starbucks' board a settlement that would protect Narasimhan's job, CNBC previously reported. Starbucks' board did not initially respond or engage with Elliott for some time, driven in part by the lingering influence of Schultz.

Starbucks unveiled an abrupt leadership change on Tuesday: Brian Niccol, a high-profile name in the restaurant industry, is taking the reins, after months of weak sales at the coffee giant and a falling stock price. Mr. Niccol will step in as chief executive next month, replacing Laxman Narasimhan, whose relatively brief stint in the top job at Starbucks began in March last year. The company’s chief financial officer, Rachel Ruggeri, will serve as interim chief executive until Mr. Niccol officially joins the company on Sept. 9. Mr. Niccol is coming off of six years at the helm of Chipotle Mexican Grill — a period that saw the fast-casual burrito chain nearly double its sales. The company’s stock price has increased about 800 percent since he took over in early 2018.

DORA requires banks, insurance companies and investment to strengthen their IT security. The EU regulation also seeks to ensure the financial services industry is resilient in the event of a severe disruption to operations. These IT providers often deliver "critical digital services to customers," said Joe Vaccaro, general manager of Cisco-owned internet quality monitoring firm ThousandEyes. This has made banks and other financial services providers more vulnerable to cyberattacks and other incidents. DORA will focus more on banks' digital supply chain — which represents a new, potentially less comfortable legal dynamic for financial firms.

Mary Daly, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, during the National Association of Business Economics (NABE) economic policy conference in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly on Monday said she expects that interest rates will be cut later this year but declined to provide a timetable or the extent to which the central bank will ease. At their meeting last week, Fed officials provided some hints that lower rates are coming but were short on specifics. Earlier in the day, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee told CNBC that the central bank's "restrictive" rates policy doesn't make sense if the economy isn't overheating, which he said it is not. If there are trouble signs with the economy, Goolsbee said the Fed will "fix it."

watch nowCNBC's Jim Cramer shared his playbook for the brutal global market sell-off on Monday. Identify what's actually wrongAlthough the global sell-off hit U.S. markets hard, "the epicenter of the damage" was Japan, Cramer said. The sell-off started when Japan's stock market posted its worst drop since the stock market crash of 1987 known as Black Monday. The sell-off is sparked by money managers who think the Federal Reserve should have cut rates last week. Investors can also take advantage of the decline in interest rates and buy stocks that yield more than 4%, Cramer said.

The Guardian said Brown wrote to police after documents that were recently made public during civil court proceedings reportedly showed Lewis met with detectives in 2011. After he was hired by the Post, Lewis also tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. In May, Brown wrote to the Metropolitan Police and said he was told that the “Met’s special inquiry team” would look into it. The security threats were believed to be genuine and were not devised as part of an alleged ‘cover-up’ and there is no evidence to show that is the case,” the News UK spokesperson said. The allegations swirling around Lewis have roiled The Washington Post newsroom in recent months.
