For the most part, my husband and I focus on the things that matter and avoid the ones that don't. So when my kids want to play outside and get dirty, we let them — we even encourage it. Their imaginations have let them build cities, slop in mud troughs like pigs, and fill the kiddie pool with dirt — and it's all fair game. But I have a solution there, too: I don't let it bother me. We also don't mind when they wrestle, though we do have a few rulesWe have a similar outlook on wrestling.

CNN —Keir Starmer’s historic victory in Britain’s general election Thursday hands him a level of power that was unthinkable for a Labour leader just five years ago. Convincing the public that the Labour Party could be trusted with public finances was a big part of his electoral campaign. Most notably, the hard-right Reform UK, led by friend of Donald Trump Nigel Farage, secured 14% of the national vote. It’s extremely likely that with Starmer now in power, Farage and his acolytes will turn their attention to tearing chunks out of the Labour Party. Fortunately for Starmer, he has quite a lot of political capital to spend.

The possibility that Donald Trump could attract a significant share of Latino voters and shave down his margins against President Biden is one of the open questions of this election. But conservative Latino voters have taken up outsize space in the national imagination. The Biden campaign should worry less about a mass defection of Latinos to the MAGA camp than about motivating young Latinos to go to the polls. It is these youths who will determine the fate of the Latino vote. As of the 2020 Census, the median Hispanic in the United States was 30 years old.

People celebrate exit poll results at a "Stop The Tories" election afterparty in London, on July 4. Suzanne Plunkett/ReutersThe United Kingdom’s decision to hand the center-left Labour Party a parliamentary majority, according to the exit poll, comes at the same time Europe is broadly in the grip of what some call a right-wing populist surge. Last month’s European elections saw a historic number of lawmakers from hard-right and far-right parties elected to the European Parliament. Farage’s political success to date has all come without him holding a parliamentary seat. An odd quirk of British politics is that the percentage of votes a party gets doesn’t necessarily translate to seats.

The paintings are older than Europe’s famed cave art such as Lascaux in France, and, while younger than some geometric abstract art found in South Africa, it’s the oldest of a narrative scene, the authors of the study said. The cave art discoveries have challenged a longstanding belief that artistic expression — and the cognitive leap that fired up the human imagination — began in Europe. BRIN Google Arts & CultureEvolution of dating techniquesDating cave art is often difficult if the work is made with mineral pigments such as ocher or manganese rather than biological materials such as carbon. The study’s dating of the cave art is robust, but it’s “a leap of faith” to suggest that the figurative art was narrative in scope, said Paul Pettitt, a professor of archaeology at Durham University in the United Kingdom. It’s also unclear why so much cave art has been found in this region of Indonesia, Aubert said, but he and his team expected to find more.

I had a mom-fail moment when I realized I hadn't registered my 4-year-old son for swimming lessons and summer camp before the cutoff. We had frozen pizza for dinner, and he went to sleep without a fight, tired after a long day of playing outside. AdvertisementThe world looks a lot different now, but I'm planning on bringing this spirit to our summer by subscribing to these philosophies. When I was a kid, it was during those long, boring summer afternoons that I formed my love of reading. Summer feels like the right time to loosen up and approach feeding my kid with a little more ease.

Yet, in a year of elections around the world, politicians are largely ignoring the problem, unwilling to level with voters about the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deluge of borrowing. In France, political turmoil has exacerbated concerns about the country’s debt, sending bond yields, or returns demanded by investors, soaring. “Many (politicians) are not willing to talk about the hard choices that are going to need to be made. Despite growing alarm over the federal government’s debt pile, neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, the main 2024 presidential candidates, are promising fiscal discipline ahead of the election. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss triggered a collapse in the pound in 2022 when she tried to force through big tax cuts funded by increased borrowing.

Upon being shown the footage, “the very first thing she said was, ‘I think this film can help me,’” according to Taylor. Who Was Harriet Tubman? A Historian Sifts the Clues.
  + stars: | 2024-06-26 | by ( Jennifer Szalai | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“Where others saw shut doors and unscalable brick walls, she dreamed into being tunnels and ladders,” the historian Tiya Miles writes in “Night Flyer,” a short biography of Tubman that is the first in a new series, called Significations and edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., about notable Black figures. For decades after her death in 1913, Tubman’s extraordinary life was mostly relegated to books for children and young adults. Thorough, probing biographies by the historians Catherine Clinton and Kate Clifford Larson were published two decades ago. More recently, Tubman was the subject of a Hollywood biopic and “She Came to Slay,” an illustrated volume by the historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar, featuring a drawing of a pistol-toting Tubman on the cover. Perhaps inevitably, all the pop-cultural attention has been double-edged, commemorating Tubman’s formidable accomplishments while also making it harder to discern who she actually was.

OpenAI's chief technology officer Mira Murati says AI may help expand humans' creativity — but the technology could wipe out some creative jobs as well. On June 19, Dartmouth College's school of engineering held a discussion with Murati about the potential effects OpenAI's tools, such as ChatGPT, may have on different industries. OpenAI's tools will "lower the barrier for anyone to think of themselves as creative," she added. However, she also said AI tools could have a potentially disruptive impact on creative industries. "Some creative jobs maybe will go away, but maybe they shouldn't have been there in the first place if the content that comes out of it is not very high quality," she said.

It’s the shuddersome, floppy Greenland shark, which can live to 300, perhaps even longer, its life span slowed and distended by the deep cold of the northern oceans. Since then, measured by weight, 90 percent of the largest creatures sharing the oceans with them have disappeared. This is not just a parable about the warming of the seas. Ninety percent of global marine fish stocks have now been fully exploited or overfished; 81 percent of monitored migratory freshwater populations have declined since 1970. But the story of that warming is nevertheless astonishing, even for those of us anesthetized by exposure to the world’s rapid ecological transformation.
