Max was always a shy kid, slow to warm up to new people and content to spend long stretches on his own. But when he got to school in the morning, it was like a curtain came down between him and the world. A new subject came along in those pandemic years to once again capture his imagination: birds. Maybe creatures that could fly and soar were an appealing notion during endless lockdowns, or maybe birds were just another vast universe for him to map. Max borrowed bird books from the library and lay in bed reading them, absorbing facts and patterns, gathering arcane knowledge.

China's Premier Li Qiang speaks during a press conference after the closing session of the National People's Congress in Beijing on March 13, 2023. He used his first and likely last press conference last year to highlight the prominence of the Communist Party over the state government. The axing of the premier’s press conference came alongside a shortening of the “two sessions” overall – first imposed during the pandemic to prevent the spread of Covid. Traffic slowed due to checkpoints on surrounding streets, with security officials even stopping and checking IDs of some cyclists riding on a major throughfare along the square.

However, I quickly learned that having a common name was going to make that difficult. Instead, the precocious little diva that I was, every Sarah I encountered posed a threat to my uniqueness. I combined my first and middle names, Sarah Elizabeth, into something I thought was unique, yet not so different that friends and family couldn’t catch on: Sarahbeth. No sooner than the ink dried on my new Social Security card did I learn the challenges of having a unique name, which I hadn’t anticipated. One particular annoyance sprouted immediately: having to spell it out or explain it every time I introduced myself (“Sarahbeth, one word, no hyphen, lowercase b…”).

Tinder announced it's expanding its verification requirements to make users share a video selfie and a photo ID to get a special verification badge. To get the blue checkmark, your video selfie has to match the photo on the ID and the pictures on your profile. Users who only complete photo verification will now get a blue camera icon badge on their profile; users who only complete the ID verification will show a blue ID icon badge. Last year, the app took its security measures a step further by requiring a video selfie to get the blue checkmark. Hinge has users submit a video selfie, which can take up to 24 hours to get approved.

New York CNN —Wyze, a smart camera maker, said that some users last week saw footage from cameras that weren’t their own because of a security glitch. As Wyze worked to bring the cameras back, about 13,000 users “experienced a security issue” where they saw wrong thumbnails from other users in the Wyze app. About 1,500 users clicked on the tabs showing the other people’s footage, which enlarged the thumbnail and in some cases allowed people to view footage from other users cameras. Wyze is blaming the incident on “a third-party caching client library” that it began using in its system. It’s not the first security incident that has affected Wyze.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration struggled to properly vet and monitor the homes where they placed a surge of migrant children who arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021, according to a federal watchdog report released Thursday. In about a third of the cases reviewed by the federal watchdog, the agency did not have legible documentation for the adults on file. The federal watchdog analyzed the case files of more than 300 migrant children from early 2021, months after thousands of children had trekked to the U.S. border seeking asylum. HHS is supposed to obtain IDs for the adults – called sponsors – who take in migrant children. And, for every five cases, HHS didn’t follow up to check on the children it had placed, often for months.

Among the most common email scams are phishing emails. Instead of sending out generic emails, the emails are addressed to an individual or a specific organization. Now, criminals anywhere in the world can use ChatGPT or FraudGPT to create convincing phishing and spear phishing emails. If I'm going to do 1,000 spear phishing emails or CEO fraud attacks, and I find one in 10 of them work, that could be millions of dollars," said Davies. It will take some time for companies to adjust, but for now, cybersecurity experts say generative AI is leading to a surge in very convincing financial scams.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Friday it had recovered Ukrainian identity documents and tattooed body parts from the site where a Russian military plane that Moscow says was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war crashed two days earlier near the Ukrainian border. Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied that its forces downed the plane and said there is no proof of who was on board. On Thursday the Investigative Committee said preliminary findings showed the plane was struck by a surface-to-air missile fired from Ukraine. Ukraine has rejected a Russian assertion that it was forewarned that a plane carrying Ukrainian POWs would be flying over Belgorod region at that time. Russia state media said the black boxes from the plane had been delivered to a special defence ministry laboratory in Moscow and investigators were already working on them.

Publicly listed data company LiveRamp's $200 million acquisition of data clean room provider Habu looks set to fire the starting pistol for a more buoyant year of adtech and martech M&A, experts have predicted. He noted that while ad teams aren't using these clean rooms en masse, many have activated them, which bodes well for the Habu acquisition. ID5's technology is deployed by the most online publishers of any identity service, according to Sincera , which measures which adtech companies are used across the industry. LiveRamp, also, could be an acquisition target, Salmon noted, as it builds out new data offerings like the clean rooms it will inherit from Habu. But not everyone is predicting the Habu acquisition will necessarily lead to an influx of M&A around cookieless adtech.

London CNN —Royal Mail could ditch its near-daily deliveries of letters as the centuries-old British institution attempts to modernize its service and plug a growing hole in its finances. Ofcom, the UK regulator overseeing the postal service, published proposals to rescue the beleaguered company Wednesday. It said Royal Mail could save as much as £650 million ($828 million) a year if it cut letter deliveries to three days a week from the current six. The number of letters sent via the Royal Mail network had halved since 2011, and financial losses have ballooned. Among its other proposals, Ofcom suggested that Royal Mail could save up to £200 million ($255 million) a year by cutting its letter deliveries down to five days a week, or by extending the time it takes to get mail to customers.

After the check, Mr. Young began asking the agents questions, which they said they answered, and he began video recording them. The arrest affidavit said that Mr. Young and his friends had followed them and began talking to the people there. Then the agent pushed Mr. Young with two hands, and Mr. Young staggered backward and hit his back on a corner of the bar table, causing him to briefly fall, the video shows. Mr. Young then got up, raised both of his hands in the air and walked backward from the agents. Another agent tried speaking to Mr. Young, who did not comply with the orders, the affidavit said.

AL-MAZRA'A ASH-SHARQIYA, West Bank (AP) — The father of an American teen killed by Israeli fire in the occupied West Bank railed against Washington's military support for Israel, as hundreds of mourners buried the 17-year-old in the family's ancestral Palestinian village Saturday. The Palestinian Health Ministry says 369 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since Oct. 7. Most of the Palestinians were killed during shootouts in the West Bank that the Israeli military says began during operations to arrest Palestinian gunmen. In several documented instances, Israeli forces and settlers have killed Palestinians who witnesses report were not engaged in violence. Israel captured the West Bank, along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, in the 1967 Mideast war.

The federal complaint calls for court orders prohibiting Meta from the practices the attorneys general allege violate the law. Civil penalties could add up to hundreds of millions of dollars, as Meta allegedly hosts millions of users who are teens and children. However, despite the company’s internal research confirming concerns with social comparison on its platforms, the lawsuit alleges Meta refused to change its algorithm. Eight additional attorneys general sued Meta last month in various state courts, making similar claims to the massive multistate federal lawsuit. Florida sued Meta in its own separate federal lawsuit, alleging the company misled users about potential health risks of its products.
