But ethics classes alone are insufficient to help students develop a clear moral compass so that they can rise above ideological catchphrases and wrestle intelligently with moral dilemmas. Instead, colleges and universities need to be more self-critical and rethink what it means for students to be educated. At the same time, academia has become more hesitant: We often avoid challenging our students, avoid putting hard questions to them, avoid forcing them to articulate and justify their opinions. This flies in the face of what a “liberal education” should be. Liberal education should be built around honing critical thinking skills and moral and logical reasoning so students can emerge as engaged citizens.

She was often praised as an accessible writer, whose work “makes individual existence universal,” per the Nobel Prize committee that honored her. Though it wasn’t published in itself, lines she wrote in her teens have appeared, “reconstituted slightly,” in her later works, Glück’s Nobel biography also noted. Glück’s poems speak directly to her readers as active participants.

To the Editor:Re “By Dropping Civics, Colleges Gave Fuel to the Culture Wars,” by Debra Satz and Dan Edelstein (Opinion guest essay, Sept. 7):As a humanities professor for three decades, I am frequently amazed at the — dare I say — hubris of my colleagues when it comes to their estimate of their capacity to mold the conscience of the Republic. Professors Satz and Edelstein believe that the decline in prevalence of “Western Civ” courses in the curriculum has been a key element in the degradation of our civic culture. Their notion that some 40 hours of class time turned students’ souls toward the light is indeed touching, but highly unlikely. They neglect to mention, for example, that in the days they look back on fondly, when freshmen wrestled with the eternal verities revealed by Socrates, these courses seldom moved Southern whites to rethink their subjugation of Black people, or Northern whites to call their Southern brothers and sisters to account. Colleges can do many things, but turning the culture away from its immemorial vices is not one of them.

Simmons was close to her mother and Faust clashed with hers, but neither wanted anything resembling her mother’s lives. Both studied foreign languages, lived abroad for the first time during school, studied the humanities at Ivy League grad schools and entered academia. I’d urge every educator to assign “Up Home” to high school students or incoming college freshmen. “So many people hear coming-of-age or bootstrap stories and think they get it,” Simmons told me. “So often,” she lamented, “people believe that if you are a victim of want that somehow escaping that is all you desire.”

In later years, she stepped over the White House threshold as a visiting senator and Cabinet member, but never in the long-sought role of Madam President. She fell short each time, and kept her distance from the White House during the Trump years. She again was a regular presence at the White House, with a seat next to Obama at the Cabinet table. She and President Clinton first celebrated the Praemium Imperiale prizes at the White House in 1994. She also showcased American sculpture in the first lady's garden at the White House.

The National Book Foundation, the nonprofit which presents the book awards, announced Friday that Dove is this year’s winner of its medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, an honor previously given to Toni Morrison, Edmund White and Art Spiegelman among others. Dove has received so many previous honors, lifetime and competitive, that it’s almost surprising the book foundation didn’t get around to her sooner. Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. When universities do not signal the intrinsic value of certain topics or texts by requiring them, many students simply follow market cues. In the absence of civic education, it is not surprising that universities are at the epicenter of debates over free speech and its proper exercise. Free speech is hard work. The basic assumptions and attitudes necessary for cultivating free speech do not come to us naturally. Universities and colleges must do a better job of explaining to our students the rationale for free speech, as well as cultivating in them the skills and mind-set necessary for its practice.
