NEW YORK (AP) — Nobel laureate Louise Glück, a poet of unblinking candor and perception who wove classical allusions, philosophical reveries, bittersweet memories and humorous asides into indelible portraits of a fallen and heartrending world, has died at 80. In awarding her the literature prize in 2020, the first time an American poet had been honored since T.S. “The advantage of poetry over life is that poetry, if it is sharp enough, may last,” she once wrote. And in each of us begana deep isolation, though we never spoke of this,of the absence of regret. “You would hand in something and Louise would find the one line that worked,” the poet Claudia Rankine, who studied under Glück at Williams College, told The Associated Press in 2020.

Drawing comparisons with other authors, the Academy said Gluck resembled 19th-century U.S. poet Emily Dickinson in her "severity and unwillingness to accept simple tenets of faith." She served as Poet Laureate of the United States in 2003-04 and was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barrack Obama in 2016. Born in New York, Gluck became the 16th woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, the literary world's most prestigious award.

Opinion | Can Civics Lessons for the Young Help Mend Society?

To the Editor:Re “By Dropping Civics, Colleges Gave Fuel to the Culture Wars,” by Debra Satz and Dan Edelstein (Opinion guest essay, Sept. 7):As a humanities professor for three decades, I am frequently amazed at the — dare I say — hubris of my colleagues when it comes to their estimate of their capacity to mold the conscience of the Republic. Professors Satz and Edelstein believe that the decline in prevalence of “Western Civ” courses in the curriculum has been a key element in the degradation of our civic culture. Their notion that some 40 hours of class time turned students’ souls toward the light is indeed touching, but highly unlikely. They neglect to mention, for example, that in the days they look back on fondly, when freshmen wrestled with the eternal verities revealed by Socrates, these courses seldom moved Southern whites to rethink their subjugation of Black people, or Northern whites to call their Southern brothers and sisters to account. Colleges can do many things, but turning the culture away from its immemorial vices is not one of them.

Simmons was close to her mother and Faust clashed with hers, but neither wanted anything resembling her mother’s lives. Both studied foreign languages, lived abroad for the first time during school, studied the humanities at Ivy League grad schools and entered academia. I’d urge every educator to assign “Up Home” to high school students or incoming college freshmen. “So many people hear coming-of-age or bootstrap stories and think they get it,” Simmons told me. “So often,” she lamented, “people believe that if you are a victim of want that somehow escaping that is all you desire.”

Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. People in businesses, large and small, are already using chatbots, AI assistants and other AI tools to help them comply with laws, regulations and internal policies. Additionally, new roles are emerging in the legal industry, such as legal engineers who build systems, legal data scientists and legal operations professionals. AI tools will then quickly re-optimize decisions associated with inventory shipments, staffing and promotions.

Preventing the arrival of new species into new regions is the best way to manage threats from invasive species, according to the report. For invasive species that have already taken hold, eradication has been a useful tool, especially on islands, according to the report.

Gen Z is giving up on college

"The world is rapidly evolving — and so is the college experience." Srivastava is one of a soaring number of Gen Zers who has decided to skip college altogether. The widening gap between the value and the cost of college has started to shift Gen Z's attitude toward higher education. They're not as interested in the typical "college experience" — whiling away four years rooming with friends and drinking at frat parties. But other members of Gen Z are taking a hard look at the "essence" of college.

When universities do not signal the intrinsic value of certain topics or texts by requiring them, many students simply follow market cues. In the absence of civic education, it is not surprising that universities are at the epicenter of debates over free speech and its proper exercise. Free speech is hard work. The basic assumptions and attitudes necessary for cultivating free speech do not come to us naturally. Universities and colleges must do a better job of explaining to our students the rationale for free speech, as well as cultivating in them the skills and mind-set necessary for its practice.

E. Gordon Gee, the president of West Virginia University, once promised that the school would have 40,000 students by 2020, but the figure is still well under 30,000 across three campuses and is projected to drop. The humanities are under threat more broadly across the nation because of the perceived left-wing ideology of the liberal arts. To resist this assault, we must provide broad access to a true liberal arts education. The campaign to overturn the liberal arts is politically motivated, through and through. I was lucky: My parents put a liberal arts education above all other goals.

I recommend incoming college freshmen buy steamers and dry-erase boards for their dorms. As a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, I know how stressful dorm shopping can be. The mattress topper is also not likely to transfer to your college apartment once you leave dorm life behind. You probably won't need a bed caddyPretty much anything you would put in a bed caddy just ends up on your desk or on the shelf or drawers you get assigned. A diffuser can annoy your new roommateHaving a diffuser probably won't be allowed in your dorm building, but it's also something that could disturb the peace with your roommate.

When Barbara Kingsolver set out to write her latest novel, “Demon Copperhead,” she was already considered one of the most accomplished writers of our time. Kingsolver grew up in rural Kentucky and lives in southwestern Virginia. She wanted to write a novel about Appalachia from the inside, as someone who is a part of it and who grew up in it. “The story I wanted to tell was not about the big guys, but about the little people,” she told me. “Demon Copperhead” won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and has been widely acclaimed for the nuanced portrait it paints of life in rural America.

Vox’s bombastic rhetoric and toxic policies pose a serious threat to Spanish democracy — but not as existential a threat as many presume it to be. Vox’s emergence — however eye-catching — did not signal any significant shift for the Spanish right and politics in Spain. Contrary to common wisdom, the far right did not disappear with Franco’s death. Lately, encouraged by the surge of right-wing, populist parties all over the world, Spain’s far right decided that it is safe to come out of hiding. Yet Spanish democracy, served by steady leadership, social and economic advances and a lively multiparty political culture, has held firm.
