JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The nation’s first openly gay governor is looking to re-enter politics nearly 20 years after he left. Jim McGreevey announced Thursday that he will seek the mayor's office in Jersey City in 2025. “I was imperfect and I’ll always be imperfect,” McGreevey, 66, said at the start of the video, which shows him watching a portion of his resignation announcement. He's hoping to succeed three-term Mayor Steve Fulop, who has already announced he’s running for governor in 2025. Jersey City, located across the Hudson River from New York City, has about 284,000 residents and is the state's second-most populous city.

Biden is highlighting $16.4 billion in funding from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law for 25 passenger rail projects on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which supports some 800,000 trips per day in a region that represents 20% of the nation's gross domestic product. "The bottom line is that for the over 200 million passengers who ride this rail corridor every year, these improvements are going to shorten travel times and improve reliability," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. Monday's event marks at least the third time Biden has held an event to highlight funding the Northeast Corridor line, underscoring the president's personal connection with the corridor. ☆ Hoboken Is Building for a Very Rainy Day

The city of Hoboken, N.J., once a marshy outcropping that the Lenape inhabited only seasonally, hugs the Hudson River. Some scientists have forecast that, with rising seas, a big chunk of Hoboken will be Atlantis by 2100. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy left Hoboken underwater and without electricity for days, causing more than $110 million worth of property damage. Across the river, the same storm drowned several of New York City’s subway lines and forced Brooklyn residents to wade through thigh-deep water. Television crews, returning to Hoboken early Saturday to film the usual aftermath, left empty-handed.

☆ New Phase of Gateway Tunnel Project in Hudson River to Begin

Construction of the long-delayed rail tunnel under the Hudson River is about to speed up, as the project gets an additional injection of $3.8 billion in federal funding. Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, will announce the latest grant from Washington on Friday, just before he and Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, are scheduled to proclaim the start of work this month on the next phase of the $16.1 billion tunnel on Manhattan’s West Side, known as the Gateway project. This new, early phase of the project involves constructing a concrete casing for trains to pass through under the Hudson Yards section of Midtown Manhattan, between the river’s edge and Pennsylvania Station. On the New Jersey side of the river, work is scheduled to begin, also this month, on the realignment of a highway so that the digging of the tunnel can begin. Plans laid out by the project’s sponsor, the Gateway Development Commission, call for two giant boring machines to grind their way through the cliff, under the river and into the bedrock of Manhattan.

CNN —Fiat, the Italian car brand best known in the United States for its tiny, retro-styled cars, is putting its name on an apartment building across the river from Manhattan. The Fiat House residences will be in a far more pragmatic location, near the western approaches to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Fiat House residents will have access to a car-sharing fleet of Fiat 500e electric cars, according to an announcement from Fiat and UNLMTD Real Estate. The building will include more than 300 apartment units ranging from studios to 2-bedrooms, some furnished, according to the announcement. While Fiat’s cars cost far less than those of ultra-luxury brands like Bentley and Aston Martin its sales have been similarly small in number.

The projects will cost nearly $298 million and are designed to protect some of the region's most vulnerable communities. Both projects were formulated by the group Rebuild By Design, which was initiated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2013, and New Jersey environmental officials. It calls for building 9,000 linear feet (about 1.7 miles or 2.7 kilometers) of flood walls, installation of flood gates and construction of berms and levees. They include planting more grass, trees and vegetation in urban areas to absorb rainfall and allow less runoff to flood streets and storm sewers. And as big as they are, the two projects starting Wednesday pale in comparison to huge flood control efforts being contemplated by the federal government.

As a painter of the natural world for more than five decades, Kay WalkingStick says it is impossible not to be influenced by the 19th-century Hudson River School’s majestic depictions of the American landscape. “They were selling the American landscape as empty and of course it was not empty; it was populated,” said Ms. WalkingStick, who in her bold, pared-down painting style revisits similar vistas on which she overlays geometric patterns used by the Native tribe connected to that specific land. “I think of it as a reminder that we’re all living on Indian Territory.”The exhibition “Kay WalkingStick/Hudson River School” opens Friday at the New-York Historical Society. It is the 88-year-old Cherokee artist’s largest museum show so far in New York City, where she received her M.F.A. “I wanted to see our Hudson River School collection through Kay’s eyes and how her work helps us to reinterpret the history of landscape painting in North America,” said Wendy Nalani E. CNN —Venice may be know as La Serenissima, but for those who have encountered her resident seagulls, the experience can be anything but serene. Now, the winged criminals have gone one stop further, causing an hour-long shutdown and two hours of chaos at the city’s airport. Venice Marco Polo Airport, located north of the city, with a runway adjacent to the lagoon, is the fifth busiest airport in Italy, and the largest in the north of the country outside the Milan area. Twenty incoming flights were diverted to other airports in northern Italy: Treviso, Verona, Trieste and Milan. Venice airport employs a resident falcon, who was dispatched by a falconer to disperse the 200-odd birds.

Daibes is now a key figure in a sweeping bribery case brought against Menendez, his wife and multiple other associates. Menendez, according to the indictment, then badgered both Sellinger and the prosecutor who had been put in charge of Daibes case, calling them several times. Menendez also asked one of his political advisors to let Sellinger know he was upset with the way the Daibes case was being handled, according to the indictment. Last year, following a delayed trial, Daibes pleaded guilty in his bank fraud case. But his sentencing has been repeatedly delayed and is now scheduled to take place next month.

☆ How Hudson River Park Helped Revitalize Manhattan’s West Side

Twelve hundred tons of sand arrived last month in Hudson River Park, the sliver of green space on the western edge of Manhattan, and it took only a quarter-century to get there. George E. Pataki signed the law authorizing the creation of the park, he vowed it would have a beach. Now, on the 25th anniversary of the Hudson River Park Act — which turned a strip of dilapidated warehouses and rotting piers along the city’s mightiest river into a sprawling park network — West Siders will finally get to wriggle their toes in the sand. The beach is part of a larger effort to complete the park and knit together its disparate sections, which have been developed in bits and pieces over the years. The newest projects expected to open soon are Gansevoort Peninsula, a recreational area off Gansevoort Street that includes the beach as part of a $73 million overhaul, and Pier 97, a $47 million project off 57th Street that will have a big playground.

☆ Latinos Have Transformed Sleepy Hollow, but Not Their Town Board

It’s not hard to find signs of the Latino influence in this working-class village along the Hudson River: Mexican taquerias and Ecuadorean delis dot the promenade along Beekman Avenue, and neighbors greet one another in Spanish, while colorful flags dance in the wind. More than half the Village of Sleepy Hollow is of Hispanic origin, according to the most recent census. The village, about 30 miles north of New York City, is part of the Town of Mount Pleasant, which uses an at-large voting system that allows residents to cast ballots for all open positions. The Mount Pleasant town board has no Latino members, and no one could recall the last time it had one. That disconnect has led to a formal claim filed with the town, on behalf of five residents who say that they and other Latino voters are being disenfranchised.
