Middle managers are becoming an endangered species in Corporate America, with some companies viewing the role as obsolete , writes Business Insider's Lindsay Dodgson. Remote work, tech efficiencies, and a general push to cut costs have contributed to middle managers' demise. It's a strategy Corporate America, particularly Big Tech, deployed in 2023. The "year of efficiency," as Mark Zuckerberg dubbed it, was all about flattening organizations, and middle managers were the ones getting squished . The death of middle managers could also fuel the current dismantling of another cohort: the middle class .

Read previewTwo of the world's most important chip companies can flip a "kill switch" remotely on their most advanced chipmaking machines should China invade Taiwan, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The Netherlands's ASML — Europe's top tech company by market value — supplies advanced machines to chip-making companies. The US has also pressured the Netherlands to block some ASML exports to China to limit the country's ability to manufacture advanced chips. The Dutch company has also said it will stop servicing some equipment previously exported to China. In what was the most anticipated quarter this earnings season, Nvidia far outpaced lofty expectations on the top and bottom lines. Adjusted gross margin of 78.9% also beat the Street's 77.2% estimate, according to market data platform FactSet. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Nvidia said Tesla's use of Nvidia AI infrastructure "paved the way" for the "breakthrough performance" of full self-driving version 12. Kress expects sovereign AI revenue to approach the high single-digit billions of dollars this year from nothing last year.

Nvidia's Hopper chips include the H100, which was announced in 2022 and faced severe supply shortages last year as the AI gold rush intensified. Tuesday's AWS news represents a pushout in demand for Nvidia chips, not a loss of it. That would be the so-called "digestion" phase for AI chips that Wall Street has been speculating about since last year. If anything, AWS deciding to wait for the more-powerful Blackwell chips could mean the digestion phase is further out on the horizon than initially thought. Unlike last year, when Nvidia's chips were in such short supply, there are now rival chips out there, such as AMD's MI300X, which is angling for a corner of the inferencing market .

The 61-year-old Silicon Valley veteran running Nvidia has overseen a $2 trillion surge in its value since the start of last year. Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesThe hype behind Nvidia's chips is no joke. But competitors have been busy developing AI chips of their own to reduce reliance on Nvidia's increasingly expensive offerings. AMD CEO Lisa Su, who's Huang's cousin, is aiming to pry Nvidia customers away with a chip named the MI300X that costs between $10,000 and $15,000. If they succeed in using Triton, they could be one step closer to a future in which alternatives to Nvidia's chips are easier to use.

Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., during the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference (GTC) in San Jose, California, US, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Nvidia's most important clients for its graphics processing units are the big cloud providers — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud. For example, CoreWeave, a GPU cloud, is currently quoting $4.25 per hour to rent an Nvidia H100. Huang said Meta has declared its intention to spend billions on 350,000 Nvidia chips, even though the company isn't a cloud provider. Meta's cluster of servers is an example of "essential infrastructure for AI production," Huang said, or, "what we refer to as AI factories."

Stocks are riding high heading into Nvidia's earnings results after the market close Wednesday. U.S. stock market benchmarks have been hovering near all-time highs. But Nvidia will test the sustainability of recent market highs given its huge size in broad market indexes, as well as its influence over investor psychology. Consider that the Jensen Huang-led company is in more than 6,000 long-only institutional funds, and in just 21 short-only funds, according to data from S & P Capital IQ. Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 forward stock split in its fiscal first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday. Stock splits do nothing to change the financial fundamentals of a company but they so make each share cheaper, which can have a positive psychological effect on retail investors. Nvidia said the stock split will make ownership "more accessible to employees and investors," the release said. Nvidia shares closed on Wednesday at $949.50. Alphabet , Amazon and Tesla all orchestrated stock splits in 2022.

"We're still really early in the AI build," Niles told CNBC's "Money Matters" on Monday. "If you look at today for the AI build out, who's really driving that?" Lam Yik Fei | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesPrior to the recent AI boom, Nvidia was known as the primary maker of chips used for 3D gaming. That's not to say that Nvidia is at risk of losing a ton of the AI chip business to rivals. Piper Sandler analysts expect it to keep at least 75% of the AI accelerator market, even as companies like Google build their own custom chips.

No one is laughing about Jayshree's company, either, as her white box solutions are beating Cisco Systems when it comes to the internet plumbing that connect Nvidia chips to the Titans. Last year at this time, Nvidia snuck into the U.S. trillion-dollar market cap club, with that May quarter. What does Nvidia really have to do then for an encore? Now we are getting into what Jensen does to beat expectations. Tall order, but Nvidia is a company that's beaten tall orders routinely we just didn't really know it until last May.

While supporters applaud Tsai for standing up to China, defending Taiwan’s sovereignty, freedom and democracy, critics blame her for straining ties with Beijing, stoking cross-strait tensions. Beijing, which deems the tacit agreement a precondition for dialogue, has cut official contact with Taipei since Tsai took office. Taiwan President Tsai inspects reservists at a training session at a military base in Taoyuan on May 11, 2023. But under Tsai, Taiwan has sought to enhance its asymmetric defense capabilities, developing and procuring cheaper and more mobile weapon systems that could be instrumental in halting a potential Chinese invasion. Taiwanese military experts have increasingly advocated for such an approach, noting that Taiwan can never match China in military might and assets.
