The Esalen Institute is a retreat and educational institute that was established in Big Sur, California in 1962. When I came to Esalen for the first time in 2014 I thought: How does this place even exist? It's a rare place where water coming down from the mountains, hot spring water coming up from the Earth, and water from the Pacific Ocean all collide in one place. But I'm not meditating all day at Esalen — I'm focused on making an impact in the world. People are coming to us in transitionGiven our proximity to Silicon Valley, we do draw people from the tech world.

A trove of bronze statues that archeologists say could rewrite the history of Italy's transition to the Roman Empire have been discovered in an ancient Tuscan thermal spring. The more than 20 bronze statues dating back over 2,000 years are being hailed as one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region. The bronze statues are more than 2,000 years old and mostly in excellent condition. The figures represent gods, including Apollo and Hygieia, complete with anatomical details, suggesting the site was of great significance to ancient Etruscans. The find is considered to be the most important to antiquities since the discovery of the Riace Warriors, rare full-sized Greek bronze statues found in southern Italy in 1972.

Not even closeThough largely unknown in the West, sand hammams — or sand baths — are anything but new. Desert camps in Morocco are offering sand hammams, or sand baths, to travelers. Sand hammams are not advisable for anyone with blood pressure or heart-related medical problems, due to the intensity of the heat. Due to the sand's mineral composition, sand hammams are also used to combat skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis and other medical ailments. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, also offers treatments on a hot sand therapy bed in a dedicated psammotherapy suite.
